3. Describe the concert venue and where you sat (i.e.: balcony): I took my twelve-year-old stepdaughter with me and we stood out side for about five minutes waiting in line to purchase tickets. Upon entering Pope Joy Hall, we were greeted by an information booth that was filled with flyers and pamphlets and programs to all different venues of art, from orchestras to plays. Lindsey asked me wide eyed; do all these things mean that this is what is showing or playing here? I looked at her and smiled and replied, yes this is Pope Joy Hall, UNM Center for the Arts and they have a variety of things going on all the time. We grabbed some information on what we would like to come and see and headed to the first theater on the left. We walked up to the entrance doors to the theater and were greeted by two very friendly greeters, who handed us our programs. Then, we entered the double doors and were greeted by an eager usher who politely guided us through hand and arm gestures to go down the left isle. Therefore, Lindsey and I sat together in the lower level on the left side middle end row seats. Once seated, I realized…

Throughout the years, billions of individuals have inhabited the Earth, each with their own lives and their own particular choices. With every choice made, these individuals have started to compose their legacy, which is the exemplification of who they are and what they have accomplished. I, like the majority of the rest of the world, am starting to leave a legacy as well, and plan to continue and enhance it along the shining stone path known as my life.…
The advice that was given to me about writing my personal statement is that whatever I wrote, it must be a statement that came directly from the heart. I’ve found that in order to do this, I must actually write about my heart. When I was born, doctors discovered that I had a ventricular septal defect. The defect needed to be repaired, or I would have been wheelchair-bound and not lived past my fifth birthday. The experience of my heart surgery was not only life-altering for me, but for my parents as well. I was their first-born child, and they had just purchased their first home. It is hard enough to learn the ropes of becoming a parent - but to be the parents to a very ill child was something they had never prepared for. They always…
I felt this sense of fear, but I knew it was just nervousness. It caused my whole body to tremble. I creeped onto the field and pass by the fifty girls and all of the coaches. Just me walking by everyone gave me this ginormous knot in my stomach, it made me feel like I was going to pass out right on the field. I was breathing heavy, like I just ran a marathon. I was beyond nervous just to be the new girl on the field. I was scared of what the girls thought of me, and how the coaches thought I would play and adapt to the sport. I had never even picked up a lacrosse stick and the girls were passing, catching and shooting on goal: how does a new player get to there if they were two week late into the season? I was terrified I would never get to the level of the rest of the team.…
The Arts have called my name for as long as I can remember. As a child, I dabbled in any intensively creative and performative thing that was in the immediate vicinity. I would go around telling all my peers that when I grew up, I was going to have any one of a number of extravagant careers: I would promise to become a famous actress on Monday, declare myself a world-class musician on Wednesday and swear to grow to be a best-selling novelist by Friday. The Arts, and all they encompassed, were my first love. It only seemed natural to me, like eating or blinking, that my life should be dedicated to the very thing that made me the happiest. I finally took my ambitions to heart my first year of high school, where I eagerly sought out beginning…
and my right knee was bleeding from an inch-wide gash. Later, after I had been examined by teachers and directors running the camp, I was taken to the Duke emergency room, where I got three stitches in my knee. Thankfully, I was not kicked out of the camp.…
I remember the first time I created art. I was seven years old and I was already in the midst of learning about myself. The pencil crayons felt like paint brushes as I let my inner artist run wild. I felt like Matisse himself even though I had no idea who that was at the time. I drew a rose and an off-coloured clownfish that looked more like Tiger. Although the things I drew had no significance, the idea of creating something captivated me ever since. I practiced baking to settle my need for creation and ended up falling in love with the hobby; baking is what fulfilled my need for creation and decoration. I still satisfy my need for art by occasionally visiting the Art Gallery of Ontario or drawing silly sketches the on scrap pieces of paper…

My writing recording sheet shows the many fluctuations of my writing grade. My year starts off with an okay start, and then towards the middle, my grades started to plummet. I would attribute that to my lack of focus in proofreading and properly checking my work. Over my last few assignments, I have been marked off for things that I could have easily attained point. During the start of the year, recording my mistakes down did really benefit me in my future assignments, but there would always be times where a mistake would slip through my proofreading. At most times, it would be my header where I might have forgotten my title, had too much spacing, or etc. Towards the end of the year, I kind-of fell off from recording in great detail as I started…
Participating in track and field inspired my interest in anatomy and physiology. I have been a sprinter my entire life and unfortunately have received numerous injuries: torn hamstrings in both legs, as well as multiple sprains and fractures during my track career. Recovering quickly through simple movements such as ankle rotations or daily stretching as instructed by the athletic trainer, made me want to learn more about the muscles in my body. My hamstrings constantly irritated me, and my coach explained that I extend my leg too far while running, causing a pulling motion on my hamstrings. I asked why my ankles were always hurt, and he told me that my foot placement while sprinting added unnecessary stress on them. I started researching the…
My name’s Samantha, and I’m a Canadian girl who currently lives in France on a gap year. If nothing else you guys seem to be a welcoming and supportive group and I would love to be apart of that.…
wrote this paper for my Honors Food for Thought class in Spring 2012. The class focused on analyzing how food is a part of our culture, and it was one of the most interesting and unique classes I have taken. For this research paper, we were asked to pick any food topic and form a thesis/argument while incorporating both memoir and research. This was a different assignment than I was used to, because for most other research papers, we never combined the creative writing aspect of memoir. Combining creative writing and research was difficult at first, but I ended up loving the combination of the two at the end. I chose to write about artichokes and their cultural significance, because they are one of my favorite foods and a large part of my family’s food traditions. Because of my own relationship with artichokes, the paper was fun to write. I also found food is one of my favorite topics to write about. wrote this paper for my Honors Food for Thought class in Spring 2012.
