Personal Narrative Essay: Francisco's Dinner At Home
As Francisco left abruptly I looked to my parents who looked concerned and disappointed. Finally my mother broke the silence and said " well Im going to start dinner, it will be done in a couple of minutes" and left the room. My dad after a short silence left into the garage. He goes to the garage when he is troubled or needs to think. I knew it was about Francisco, I saw that look they gave him.

I ran up to my room and called my BFF Elizabeth. I told her how my parents acted once they found out he was Mexican. She said that parents don't understand and think that all Mexicans are illegal a disrespectful. Eventually my mom called me down to eat . So I hung up and ran downstairs, my little puppy ran down with me. My mom made spaghetti with Texas toast, its my favorite. My dad comes out of the garage into the kitchen. We all dish up and

My mom adds in to the conversation
"we don't think you should be hanging out with people like Francisco". This got me angry, my parents didn't understand. So I tried to explain to them about Francisco.

" He is kind, respectful , and one of my best friends". I can see my dad getting agitated. My dad has a short temper, especially when I am arguing with him. " Now you see hear missy, my daughter is not going to be friends with some dirty Mexican"! Hearing that was enough for me to let out all of my emotions on my parents, some of it I just blurted out not thinking.

" YOU GUYS DON'T UNDERSTAND ANYTHING ABOUT FRANCISCO, YOU DON'T LIKE HIM JUST BECAUSE HE IS MEXICAN? I AM ASHAMED TO CALL MYSELF YOUR DAUGHTER!" Tears in my eye I ran up to my room , shut and locked the door. My parents chased me up my room, but weren't fast enough to stop me from locking the door. Then my dad yelled.
"If you ever see Francisco again we are taking away your door, your dog, and your phone". I didn't answer back to him, I just dug my face in my pillow and

My family and I had gone to the forest to have a cookout and every time we go, there's usually many people. We got there and we started setting everything up and my uncle got the radio out and started playing Mexican music really loud that we always listen to. At first I was so embarrassed because there were other people there and they started staring at us and I told my uncle to turn it down a bit because it was Spanish music. In my mind, I just wanted to leave, but then my mom came up to me and told me something similar as Amy’s mom. She said “You should never feel embarrassed to be Hispanic, you have to show other people who we are and feel proud of who you are because we are all the…

I was born and raised in Austin, Texas however, my parents immigrated from Mexico. My father made his journey from Sombrerete, Zacatecas and my mother made her’s from Dolores Hidalgo, Guanajuato. My mother mostly worked by cleaning houses and my father stuck to cooking for either fast food or restaurants. They met working together at the restaurant my father currently works at called Fonda San Miguel. As my mother grew older and had multiple kids, the effects from working long hours took a toll on her and she decided it was best to not work. My family of two brothers and two sisters was living under a single income. My oldest sister was able to move out while I was still young as well as my older brother a couple of years after her. My youngest…

What is a legacy? Lin Manuel Miranda as Alexander Hamilton described it as “planting seeds in a garden you never get to see”. In a similar way, the Broadway musical, In The Heights, sings about continuing what is passed down to you because one day it may be gone. One song in particular titled, “Paciencia y Fe” inspires me to work as hard as I can just like Abuela Claudia did when she immigrated from Cuba. The Broadway hits’ harmonies and melodies have instilled in me a sense of hope for the future, where I can continue a family legacy.…

When I was 13, I had to go through a transition that tested my character tremendously. Let’s rewind to my seventh grade year, which was four years ago. Talk was going around the little private school I attended in Ardmore, Oklahoma that my family was moving away. I had not heard anything about this, I had no idea what anyone was talking about, and I was definitely not happy with being the subject of everyone’s gossip. I heard stories about where and why my family was moving that you would not believe. I recall one girl who said that my family of five was moving to Australia because my dad was a Mexican immigrant who was running from the government. If you knew anything about me, you would know that story was completely bologna; my dad was not Mexican, he was the whitest white boy you could ever lay eyes upon, we were not running from the government, and we were definitely not moving to Australia. Eventually, I found out the rumors of us moving were true. We were moving to Durant, Oklahoma at the end of my seventh grade year.…

I loudly said “ you leave your cars unlocked, let me guess you all trust each other? Everyone just started laughing as we walked inside the Mexican taqueria. As we were eating my aunt started laughing and telling me that in North Carolina they trust each other in their “barrios” that they all take care of their things, that’s why they don’t lock their cars or close their front door. So, I guess everything will be all right I said smiling back at her, I’m sorry is just that I’m not used to that I said in Florida back home we can’t trust no one. We never know what can…

I ran towards the brightly lit living room, where I saw my grandmother standing in the middle of the plush carpet. She was on the phone talking to my mom, saying “...Yeah, It’s just something we have to do.” I started wondering what she was going to do, until she shouted, “He ain’t gonna like it, but he’s gotta grow up!” I just stood there appalled. I responded at that point, and the news that I got changed my life forever.…

As he opened his car door he looked back at me, sighed, and then ducked into the driver seat. I sank down onto the sidewalk. I could feel the hot tears on my face, they dripped off, giving the tulips a scorching shower. I fell over and huddled into a ball, trying to escape from the outside world. That’s where my mom found me an hour later when she came home from work. That’s the position I stayed in until she dragged me up onto my feet and swept me into the house. When I got upstairs to my room, the sobs kept bursting out and I felt like…

I looked up at him with irritation and half yelled, “Are you kidding me, you can’t just take my food like that, you need to ask before you dig your grubby, little hands into my food”. He dropped the strawberries back on the plate and burst out, “wow spaz, it’s just a strawberry, and you don’t help out with anything around the house anyways”. I was fuming with rage and we each shot a few more degrading comments at each other until he finally stormed outside to go take down the Christmas lights just as dad asked him to do earlier. Admittedly, this was one of the most childish arguments we have ever had over some strawberries, but it gets better because I then I had to go tell my dad to get him involved. However, my dad’s reaction did not go as I had anticipated as he stopped me mid-sentence to start yelling at me for freaking out, but then stormed outside to be equally as mad with Alex for being…

Back then, I thought that he was a bad father because he did not allow me to hang out with my friends. I had to be home mostly by five in the evening during weekdays. I guess during that time, I felt very controlled and isolated, so I rebelled. I became so rebellious that my father thought I had become so americanized. I started talking back at him. I came home much later, like at nine instead of being home by five. I skipped a lot of classes during my senior years and for that, my dad was continually called to school by my teachers. I became really wicked.…

After we fixed part of the fencing, dad suggested we take a break and get something to drink. While walking to the truck he asked me how things were going with my boyfriend, and looked over at me with his eyebrows raised. Feeling defeated, I spilled everything to my dad about our relationship and how I wasn’t having the feelings for him like he was for me. He nodded every once in a while, but mostly just listened. I watched his expression change through the time I was talking, and by the end he was almost smiling. “Clarissa, you just don’t get it do you?” I was a bit frustrated, what did my dad see that I didn’t? Again he started talking, “Your such a beautiful girl, and any guy can easily fall for you, just like this one. The hard part that you…
