Personal Narrative: Exploring The Patterns Of Humanity
If I had a ticket to go anywhere I wanted, I would choose the inside of the human body, since it would be the best way to be one-on-one with it. I am intrigued to find out what really happens inside, explore the actions we do every day without even realizing. I am fascinated by the capability of the human body, how it can manage to work as a whole. We learn about the it in books, but it’s just words on paper, to deal with it in person is a whole different story.
I would visit the most impressive organs and areas of the body, just like you would in a carnival with your favorite rides. First of all, once in the human body, I would start by observing the heart. It is one of the most salient organs we have, and yet it is so tenuous. It would be like a song going on in there, with

Next, I would check out the millions of cells that we have, inspect that all of them are continuing their cycle. They would be rushing past me, like a herd of buffalo, too many to count. Along the way, I would discover that one of the cells is not completing the whole cycle, it has become abnormal and wants to start spreading. Instantly, I would find a natural killer cell and chase the abnormal cell, until I reached it and stopped it from spreading. Soon to realize, that it had already spread to five other cells. Therefore, I would go on a chase to find all of them and banish them, before they became cancerous. It would be like laser tag, where I would have natural killer cells and hide from the abnormal cells, wait for them to be visible and shoot them with the killer cell. Furthermore, I would check out the breaking down of food, how the digestive system starts, but maybe I won’t explore the ending of it. Since, I am not the healthiest eater, I would like to explore how foods in reality end up benefiting you or just doing harm. I would take the tour of the digestive system like if it was a slide, just passing through all of the stages while they are happening. Lastly, I

I’m happy with who I am today, just as everyone should be. But if I could change anything about myself, I’d want to have more motivation to do things. In the mornings before school I can barely get out of bed because I’m so tired and don’t want to go to school. I’m exceedingly intelligent but I don’t have any drive. I procrastinate on most of my work, and sometimes I just don’t want to do the work. Right now I’m rank 14 in my class but I could’ve been higher if I had any drive my freshman year. I don’t think about how my decisions now will impact me later and when I do, I don’t really care. I also don’t have much motivation to do things in sports activities. Last year I played volleyball and I never had that much playing time. Never being able…

At times I feel as though I'm trying and failing to be a human being. But what makes us human? I feel although I'm a human-shaped shell made out of pieces of things I find interesting. Instead of a real identity. Just layers of things that I hope will make me different from others. But am I? We rely so much on the opinion of others. But why? Why do we crave acceptance of others? If people were to look closely, they'd notice there really isn't anything there.Just a mess of a person trying to find their ‘place in the world. All we want is to be remembered. Just to prove we are something , we where something. How will I be remembered? Or will I fade into oblivion? Is this the meaning of life? To spend it hoping we have some significance in this…

I am the eldest of three to a school teacher and professional musician turned deli clerk. I grew up on the island of Martha’s Vineyard. Like most of my classmates, I qualified for free or reduced lunch. It is difficult for families to find any house to rent year-round, never mind a safe one. I remember in one house we weren’t allowed to jump, or run for fear the floor collapsing. I had classmates who didn’t have enough to eat; one of my best friends in middle school was a foster child whose mother struggled with addiction. I was among the few who, though poor, was well cared for and loved by my happily married parents. I believe that in a “civilized” society no one should have to struggle for the most basic necessities. At first, I was not…

    Bodies: The Exhibition

"Bodies…. The Exhibition," at the South Street Seaport featured the preserved remains of 22 humans and many other specimens, including a set of conjoined fetuses, an example of male genitalia and a human brain. I found everything visually appalling, yet at the same time I could not take my eyes off of everything I was taking in. Every single body part looked fake to me. However, that isn't a bad thing. They make things look so amazing. So amazing, in fact, that these body parts simply just don't look natural or even real. People get a much deeper understanding of what's inside their bodies after experiencing this exhibit. They preserve the organs in a way that they look like they were artificially machine made. I was shocked to learn that these organs and body parts were once in a real person's body and actually functioning at one time.…

My actions are always a direct showcase of my personal characteristics. A few that are particularly important are having patience, being non-judgmental, and thinking creatively. I learned a majority of my patience through my position as a research position. Research does not have immediate results; a good experiment takes time. My seemingly menial tasks, such as entering data, eventually contributed to the final product. I learned to be non-judgmental in my time shadowing an obstetrician, where I interacted with patients with so many stories. To judge them would cause a disservice, and potentially harm them. Finally, I learned to think creatively during my time at the Guild for Human Services. Each student was unique in his or her problems,…

Ralph Waldo Emerson once said “To be yourself in a world that is trying to make you something else is a great accomplishment”. A question such as “who am I”? Really gives me the opportunity to differentiate and express who I really am and who I can be. I am not a complex person who thinks the world is against me, nor am I overly sophisticated “know-it-all” who doesn't take time to pay attention to my surroundings. I can't say that I am like every other person because there are certain things that make me a unique individual. What I can say is that I am progressing towards a brighter future.…

Who am I? That has always been an essential question for as long as I can remember. I never really understood why we had to answer that question along the way, but I’m now a senior at SJPII and I still have no idea who I am. It really bothers me that for 16 years I still haven’t figured out who I am. Constantly going from class to class and making new friends I still can’t pin point who the “real” me is.…
