Everyone has that one dream, that one dream that no matter what they always hope comes true. Well for me it all started when I was about three. My mom took me to “The Downtown Aquarium” in Denver, CO. As soon as we walked through the doors, I was completely mesmerized. I enjoyed seeing all of the marine life. Ever since then I have always wanted to learn more about them.…
I was with my dad fishing on a Friday during the summer at about 4:30 PM. The day was hot and bugs were everywhere around us. I had on jeans, a t-shirt and a vest to store any fish we catch. My dad had on the same, but i had a smaller fishing rod than he did because I was small and not really ready for a fishing rod like my dad’s. We went out to fish and started at a bridge that was very rundown and poorly maintained and didn’t catch much because of the current and rocks around where we were. We got one fish to bite but it fell off whenever we pulled it up out of the water. We then decided to move to another spot over by the cliffs and ridges because no one was there to get in the way. For a while we didn’t go anywhere too crazy and nowhere that took too much effort to get to. Little did I know was that it’d all change quicker than I thought..…
Have you ever encountered injustices? How did you faced it? In the short story, Truth About Sharks by Joan Bauer, Beth, faced injustice at a very young age. I believed that we all come across discrimination and unfairness, and we should stand and speak up for our it because we don’t want other people control our lives.…
Most people are afraid of sharks and don’t want anything to do with them but there are people that actually know things about sharks and don’t fear them. Sharks much like people come in all different shapes and sizes and can and do live mainly everywhere. What people don’t know is that sharks are much like people they take care of their young by protecting them, feeding them, teaching them to hunt. They are thought of as cold-blooded killers but they aren’t they just do what they have to do to survive they hunt to eat they can’t go to a grocery store and buy food they have to hunt for it they will eat what they…
The shark’s identity has been destroyed by movies, documentaries and more. Movies such as Jaws, makes the public believe that the shark is highly dangerous and does not do anything…
My second choice was a great white shark, my love for sharks is enormous! When i was 9 years old i was scrolling through the television channels and stumbled upon an AMC screening of Deep Blue Sea, after watching that I was obsessed with all types of sharks(Megalodon, Great White, Tiger Shark). I loved going…
Have you ever been swimming at the beach and thought that perhaps you had seen a shark? Sharks have become a common fear for most humans since the movie Jaws first appeared on the screen in 1975. Prior to that movie most people never gave a thought about sharks being a danger to humans. Actually we are more of a threat to them than they are to us. Some shark conservationists have pointed out that hundreds more people are killed every year in furniture related accidents than by sharks. Attacks on humans could be termed mistaken identity.…
1. In the story the truth about sharks the antagonists is Beth. She is a typical 17 year old girl that isn’t a morning person; however she seems welcoming and considerate. Hannah is a helping hand at the store Beth is shopping at; Beth takes time and talks with her, which ended up being beneficial to her in the end. Hanna is a flat character, although she is important to the story she isn’t described with a lot of detail. Madge P Groton is the security guard, she is the protagonist. From the introduction of Madge you could tell she was stern and not overly friendly. Another important character would be the officer that eventually listened to Beth’s story.…
We cannot run away from the fact that Sharks have been stereotyped to being these big and dangerous species that are feared by all humans. This species has been misrepresented in movies to be one of the most feared species in the ocean. We’re busting some shark myths that have been going on forever.…
I have a deep interest in the ocean and marine life, which was fostered when my family and I moved to the Pacific Coast. This interest grew further after I went on a backstage tour to the aquarium at the Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo. Due to this continuous exposure to the ocean and the creatures that live there, I am focusing my education around my interest in marine life. It's for this reason that I’m majoring in Marine Biology with a minor in Chemistry. With this education, my goal is to become an Aquarist, and build my way up to becoming an ocean or aquarium diver. As a diver, I want to have the opportunity to study coral reefs, and create and implement conservation plans. In addition, I want to study sea turtles and ways to conserve their declining…
Hi, i'm Sheil the shark! I live in the coastal and offshore waters of South Carolina. I live with my two brothers, but I don't have a mom or dad. Me and my brothers all fend for ourself but when necessary team up to defeat and eat, bigger prey. We love to eat fish and invertebrates, as well as seals, sea lions, dolphins and much more! I love living in the really salty water! Me and my brothers like to terrorize the schools of fish near us, and maybe get a bite to eat. My favorite food is salmon, but I don’t see them a lot, so I eat as many as I…
Sharks have always been an important part of Earth. Many cultures - beyond just the Chinese with their famous shark fin soup - consider them to be powerful symbols, deities, or sacred animals. They help keep the ecosystem in check. This, in turn, highly benefits the economy. It’s difficult to imagine a world without sharks - considering that sharks have existed for over 400 million years (What If There Were No Sharks?). This makes them approximately three million eight hundred years older than us. Unfortunately, with the rise of anti-shark movies such as Jaws, people have begun to fear sharks. Many of them wish to kill them, and will not mourn their loss. However, if one looks deeper into this solution, one will discover a myriad of problems. Problems which are guaranteed to occur if shark culling is continued. If the ocean is to be saved and humans are to be kept safe, an environmentally safe alternative to shark culling must be discovered.…
One of my greatest fears is the fear of sharks. Silly right? When I was little, my grandmother would always take me and my other siblings down to the beach since her parents lived in florida. I would always take my goggles and snorkeler, swim out into the open ocean, and begin my search for sand dollars. One day came to where I had became lost in my search and found myself to be a little too far away from the shore. I popped my head out of the water and realized I couldn’t touch the bottom even though I had been able to see it. I dove back into the water only to find myself facing the side fin of a bull shark. I was instantly paralyzed with fear and thought I was looking death in the face. I swam as fast as I could to the sand bar because I knew it was closer to my location than the actual shore was. Once I was sitting on a whole bunch of sand and there was about an inch of water around me I was finally able to catch my breath. I crawled back to the shore where my family was and told them about my encounter. Being little they didn’t believe me, but not once did I go further than the sand bar after that. They told me to dry off because we were going to walk to a crab shack that happened to be on the beach we were on for lunch. We were only halfway between our set up and the crab shack when screams were coming from behind us. We…
Any new situation makes my anxiety act up a bit, but my very first surfing lesson there was no exception. To over -come my fear of sharks I had to follow through with the lessons. As I came out of the bathroom that morning from changing into my wetsuit I began to become more nervous. I grabbed my board and stood anxiously on the beach waiting for my friend to show up. After a couple minutes of looking at the sunset over the horizon, I became less and less nervous. As I stood there my friend finally walked up, tapped me on my shoulder and asked if I was ready to go. I told him I was still extremely nervous about the sharks. He smiled and told me there was nothing to worry about that there hadn’t been any reports of shark attacks in the area since the early 80’s. Even though he was older and a much better surfer than me, I still wasn’t embarrassed to express my feelings towards him about the sharks. After a couple more minutes of us two talking about it my mind became at ease and I was ready to…
I wake up to the sun shining on my face and my mom shaking me to get up so we could go on the dock together. Every morning she’d wake me up to see if I’ll ever be able to see any manatees on our vacation in Bonita Springs. With my luck, I was never able to see any, and that lead to a family joke. They always made fun of me for it, because my mom had the luck of being able to see them. Then there was me, who the manatees seemed to be afraid of.…
