Personal Narrative: Flying Radio Control Airplanes
Flying Radio Control Airplanes By:Madison Vermilyea

One day my dad was flying radio control airplanes and I got interested to fly them, so I asked my dad if I could ever fly like him, he said yes. He started to teach me how to fly airplanes. When I was catching on I learned new tricks, it's fun to do tricks, but sometimes I mess up. When I do crash my airplane there's always someone there so they help me fix it. Then i'm on my way flying again. One day my sister wanted to fly my plane and I didn't want here too, but my dad made me give it to her. She crashed it and I was not surprised because she can't really fly them. Then I got tired and watched my dad fly his airplane. I was always catching it and throwing it, it was so fun.

Life is comprised of a series of learning profound learning experiences. On that stands out occurred last year in seventh grade. Two friends and I decided we wanted to try something new, to learn how to play basketball! We made that decision mainly because we wanted to do an activity together for the winter term, and seventh graders didn't have the option of doing the winter school play. We were very hesitant; only one of us had any experience playing basketball, and we didn't think it would be very fun to run up and down a court trying to get a ball in a hoop. Still we kept an open mind and began to learn how to play.…

Flying Lessons and Other Stories is a solid anthology. I love the recurring theme of the short stories which is the lessons you can glean after reading each one. All of the stories feature those kids who are usually unseen. The underprivileged, the weird, the outcast, the brown, and black kids. It’s a necessary mirror for all ages, particularly for middle grade readers. I can’t recommend it enough.…

It was unusually cold on this morning of September 11th, 2001, and my alarm had just went off. The odd but needed 5 am. was when I woke up, because my flight was going to leave around 8:30 and I needed to be there on time. The reason I was flying to San Francisco was I was having a family reunion with my dad, my step-mom, and my step-brothers. So, I jumped in the shower quickly with joy and excitement. I hadn't seen my family in forever since I had gotten a job as the assistant of the manager in Ralph Lauren Headquarters. I had just gotten my hair dried as I heard my phone ring. It was dad, making sure that I was on my way. I talked to him for a few minutes and then hung up. I glanced at the clock and realized…

Until I was three years old, I was having fun as a toddler by myself. Although, a month before my fourth birthday, I received a beautiful baby sister named Kinsley Ann Kemper. Little did I know that within about nine years she was going to become an ornery child. When she was little, my parents had to set rules for me to follow because they knew that I could follow the rules that they gave me, while they were taking care of Kinsley. Also, when I was three, I started to go to dance. My first year of dance, I got an award for the dancer of the year, which made me very overjoyed and excited at the same time. I can still remember…

One day my coach pulled me to the side and told me I was going to be the quarterback for the game. I thought I was going to die! I never played quarterback so I was very nervous about messing up. I instantly became sick and thought about leaving the game. My mom was on the sideline, so I went over to her and told her about me being afraid to throw the ball. My mom grabbed me by the shoulders and told me to fight my fear, and focus on being the best quarterback the team ever saw. I turned around, got in the game, they passed me the ball, and I threw the ball directly…

I had always been a good child. No matter how much work I had, I did it. Even if I had two hours of homework, you could count on me to help you. Now that I am an adult, I realize what a wonderful childhood I had. I went to a great private school with the best teachers and students. I even had the privilege of having my very own textbooks. Those who weren’t as lucky, had textbooks destroyed by students who had them before they were even born. It might seem like all I cared about was school, but I loved to have fun. I played with my friends all weekend. My favorite activities to play outside were cricket and badminton. I wasn’t that great at cricket, but I was a formidable badminton opponent. In fact, I was so good that my friends refused to play me for fear of losing 21 to 0. When it was too hot during the summer, or too rainy during the monsoon season, my friends and I played card games. I enjoyed playing an Indian card game called “fish”, in which he goal is to get cards in a certain order. Both of my parents worked in offices, so I always got presents on holidays and my birthdays.…

The first week in field was definitely a learning experience for me, but it was also one of the best times that I have had with children. At the beginning of the week I was nervous, thinking about my first time working with children, whether or not the children would like me, and where I would fit into the classroom, now though I’m relieved at how well I feel about field. The first day was amazing, as soon as I got there the student teachers involved me with the kids and before I knew it I was reading stories on the ground. I’ve been writing in my journal every day after I leave field and I write one feeling to sum up the day; so far I have written relieved, happy, and smiley. While there were times throughout the week where I could feel myself…

I joined the United States Air Force January 25, 2001. I was barely 18 and ready to be on my own. The back then, in my eyes, was easy. Joining the Air Force meant a free college education, a place to live, and a paycheck. These were important things when you are 18 and on your own. I knew nothing of world events, wars, or terrorism. On June 13, 2001 I began my journey with basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. We learned about the attacks on Khobar Towers, the Oklahoma City bombing, the 1991 attack on the World Trade Center, and all about biological and chemical warfare. We looked at Desert Storm and what it meant to be at war. My comrades and I began to look at life a little differently, but we truly believed that we were in a good place and the world was mostly…

I was very scared my head was full of sweat dripping softly down my face when I say the doctor with a needle.
