Personal Narrative-Gastritis In Public Schools

One fateful night during the summer of seventh grade, I sat in the emergency room and waited for the answer that I so desired after years of complaining about intestinal pain. What I got was a diagnosis—gastritis, which can be described as the irritation and evident erosion of one’s stomach lining. The diagnosis itself wasn’t much of a surprise, as the years of agony had to have amounted to something, but the repercussions of my illness were. As I entered eighth grade, the negative implications were not only a surprise, they were also relentless. Culinary arts, home design, business management, medical endeavors—you name it, I’ve probably read about it. I was so sure that I had exhausted all possible options until I was confronted by a book on my local libraries bookshelf entitled The Economics of Public Issues by Daniel Benjamin. I was mesmerized. My eyes perused all over the books pages and I become further and further enthralled into this new topic. I was sold, and soon political science and social activism became an essential part of my identity. Once my health stabilized to the point that traditional schooling seemed a probable part of my future, I entered Olympic Heights Community High School as a tenth-grade student. With wide eyes and determination, I nurtured my new found passion and allowed it to blossom in all facets of my life, such as extracurriculars and political participation. I also allowed it to heal the loss of stimulation I had experienced while in Hospital Homebound. My early exposure to the world of political ideas has opened me up to a realm of study that I intend to pursue in the future by researching the fields of political science in correlation with United States government, economics pertaining to the funding of social and political programs, and women’s
