Personal Narrative-Grand Manan Island
I have spent my youth in a place without pollution and breathtaking views, surrounded by the sea. Grand Manan Island is where I have been for the whole 17 years of my life. I have hiked the coast, alongside 300 foot cliffs, and climbed the lighthouses. I have swum in the same sea from which I have eaten my food from, the Bay of Fundy. There is no place I’d rather be, than surrounded by the sea. The main road, Route 776, is approximately 28 kilometres. There is a back road, along with hundreds of side roads. Our population is around 2500, but it doubles during tourist season which is the summer. Everything that happens, is known by all, and usually affected by all. It is hard to find an unfamiliar face, or someone who you are not related to. We have a community school with a …show more content…
There are several islands within our archipelago such as Wood Island, and Deer Island, but the only one that is populated is White Head Island. For elementary students, White Head has a small school there with one teacher. Youth from that island in grades 6-12 have to take a ferry across in the morning to be picked up at the bus and taken to the Community school. There are countless trails on the back portion of the island leading to people’s camps acting as a quick getaway to the lake after a long week. There are also many walking trails, all connected through a main trail called the Red Trail that was once used to search the coast for shipwrecks. 2/3 of this island is made up of volcanic lava, and we are also right above an earthquake fault line. There are so many things to see on this island if you love nature. There is a large hole in a rock formation caused by erosion that we call the hole in the wall. There is a cliff called seven days’ work caused by 7 consecutive flows of lava that took place over many years. You can see these layers, and it looks very cool. We have cliffs as high as 300

Walking up Punahou Street, I see the congested road filled with cars of all shapes and sizes, bumper to bumper. I also see students walking past me, bicyclist riding on the road, and senior citizens relaxing at Punahou Square Park. I knew I was close to Pōhakuloa as more and more students, some with their parents, walk past me. So much more that there is not enough room on the sidewalk for both me and the students and their parents to walk on.…

There’s no other place in the world where I feel the most at home than being at Long Beach Island. There you can smell the fresh, salty air of the ocean as the warm breeze brushes across your face. It is a place where the sand, sometimes chilled by the water or boiling hot up in the sand dunes, fiddles its way through your toes one by one sending chills down your spine with every step. Off in the distance you can hear the chiming of bells as the ice cream men call children of all ages to cool themselves off with a frozen treat. This is the place that all summer long, I am lucky to call home.…

I was a camp counselor at Camp Wabikon ‒ a co-ed overnight summer camp located in Temagami, Ontario for children who are 6-15 years of age. Along with teaching Red Cross swimming and lifesaving and Tennis, I was my cabin's 'parent' for six weeks. Therefore, I was present with the children at all times. In essence, I was the leader of my cabin's the physical, social and mental development. The main things I learned were the importance of time management and organization , as I had to plan lessons for swimming and Tennis while taking care of my cabin; conflict resolution between campers; and the ability to plan and foresee events (I had to plan camp-wide events and activities for all campers).…

I used to love Cape Grim. It was an unspoilt coastal wilderness. My father and I would hike there every weekend in spring, when the heat wasn’t yet unbearable and the fresh breeze would caress the light beads of sweat on our foreheads. We’d go down the hidden path on the cliffside to the white sands below. It was a tranquil place down there where the soft sunlight would shine down from the boundless blue sky, dyeing the sea hues of orange and magenta.…

I stayed for the weekend in June. We camped at a nearby campground that was about 20minutes away from the island by boat. It felt like a dream when you were on the island because it was just so pretty. The most magnificent part is that no cars are allowed on the island so all you see is bikes, and horse and buggies. My favorite part was when my grandparents, Hannah and I biked 8 miles around the entire island. It was probably the easiest bike ride ever because I was so distracted by the stunning view. It would tell you what mile you were on too because a sign to the side of the road would say mile 1, mile 2, mile 3,…

I have spent days in the Hawaiian Islands educating Hawaiians about Christianity and it is no vacation. I have grown taller from when you have last seen me, but I do look very different. My hair is now a light brown from the exposure of the scorching sun, my body has become frail and scrawny from the lack of food and nutrients on my journey, and my attitude towards events has changed and I am more aware and sensitive to my peers aboard the ship. I have suffered sea sickness and have witnessed many deaths while sailing to the island, either from the lack of food or health. Here in the Hawaiian islands isn’t all that bad though. I have met many friendly Hawaiians and we are slowly starting to understand each other. However, aside from the welcoming Hawaiians, the scenery is something that is a once in a lifetime opportunity, I could have spent my whole day here with my hands and feet engulfed into the grainy sand while watching the sparkling, blue…

Ever since I was born, I was a military brat. Not knowing where to call home, or if any place could be home, I moved. I moved six times, four of those places were towns that nobody could think about. Germany, North Carolina, Alaska, North Carolina, Germany, and Alaska, yet no place to call home. May 22, 1999, my first day on this world; Kronach hospital had its first American baby in their hands, yet they acted like I was a different species. The only event I remember was when I was about one. While I was one, I grabbed everything in my reach, even a grill handle. As a baby, I did not know that the handle was moving, the grill top had smashed my thumb. Ever since that event, I now have a starfish mark on the side of my right thumb from where the stiches were.…

Thinking back I remember that week as one of the best weeks of my life. Never had I been so fascinated by nature, I never really thought that the outdoors could offer more than the indoors could, yet I still enjoyed it very much. Making many new friends along the way, the wonders of nature never fail to impress. On May 4, 2015 the seventh grade class of Fairmont North Tustin left John Wayne airport to depart to Phoenix, Arizona with our Assistant Principal Mr.Drake. As soon as I got to the airport I checked in my bag, and went to the gate with our class. Our whole 7th grade class was beaming with excitement. But none of us knew the wonderful adventures that awaited us in the Great Outdoors.…

Have you ever been through an experience where you moved to an unfamiliar location by yourself? I had the opportunity to do just that when I left my hometown in Hong Kong and come to America for a better education. I was only thirteen years of age at the time. I appreciated them for providing me this valuable and precious chance for my thirteen years old birthday present.…
