Personal Narrative-Hiding Maize And Blue In Ohio
It’s a chilly November afternoon and I’m racing home to catch The Game. I’m thrust without warning into the air, flying backwards until finally landing on my backside. I quickly jump up to my feet and I’m face to gut with a giant. He’s painted scarlet from head-to-toe with a string of worthless nuts around his neck. He wears his jersey proud, towering over me. “O-H!” he screams in my face. There’s an awkward silence, neither of us move. He grows angry then repeats, “O-H!” Unzipping my jacket, I reveal the source of our standoff, a maize and blue Michigan Wolverines jersey. Disgruntled, the giant appears nauseous before prattling a gagging noise and storming away. Born bleeding maize and blue in Ohio, this standoff is an all too familiar occurrence. The cool months of August through December have never passed without plenty of disputes between myself and fellow Ohioans. There are few here like me, but we stick together. We wear our colors with pride. We’ve been forced to develop thick skin and we stand up for ourselves. We exemplify perseverance. When we’re faced with adversity year after year, we continue to have faith in our Wolverines. We do not abandon our team when calamities present themselves. …show more content…
Overcoming obstacles and limitations set in front of me is owed to the thick skin I was forced to establish. The perseverance and determination I have obtained is applied to so many other aspects of my life. Giving up has never been an option for me. Lessons I have learned have been carried with me throughout my academic success and individual growth. I have learned to not give in to conformity. Although I am faced with ridicule far too often, I would not want it any other way. I’ve learned that it is, in fact, great to be a Michigan

That doesn’t go as plan and he gets sacked in the backfield. GC fans are terrified because we just lost a few yards, but it isn’t over just yet. The team huddles up and the quarterback calls another play. Its looks like we’re going to run the same play that gave us a gain of fifteen. The center hikes the ball and just like before, he gives it to the running back. Everyone in the stands trying to look past all the players on the field to see where the ball is going. Suddenly, we see a black jersey come out of a pile of other jersey. As fast as lighting Greene County is running down the field aiming for a touchdown. The announcer once again “he’s at the thirty, the twenty, the ten, touchdown!” That seals the deal with only a minute left until halftime. Washington Wilkes fans sits with disgust all over their faces. Our rivalry that thought were going to blow us out, now has to go into half-time with a tied game. The fans happy as ever, can now go into the third quarter with all hopes that we can win the game. The band now playing the Greene County Tigers theme song, “Eye of the Tiger”, in good…

The Kansas Jayhawks mascot was the first thing to catch my eye as I entered Allen Fieldhouse for the first time on January 20th, the day KU played against Baylor. The mascot was so big it stretched across the entire floor. Several other details seemed to catch my eye as well, like the glowing “KANSAS” letters that touched the wall next to the overpriced gift shop, the many show cases of KU basketball players and the illustrated sign that hung above the girls basketball show case that read, “Pay Heed, All Who Enter, Beware of the Phog”.…

All through his article, Shakley has used a great deal of passionate interest. He opens by portraying his experience of the abuse of the mascot at the Cleveland Indians New York Game, where him and his dad partook. Shakley states that he bought a Cleveland's hat at the occasion with the Cheif Wahoo logo on it. He then brings up the time he was ten where he disappointed his mother, "When we returned home back from Oklahoma my mom took one look at the hat with its leering, big nosed, buck-tooth redskin exaggeration and jerked if off my head and tossed it in the trash." (Shakley, 2011, p. 520). His mother who is a Creek Indian woman…

Outside the Coliseum is the diehard, devoted fan base. At 7 am the parking lot is filled with diehard fans that come early to tailgate prior to the game. As you make your way to the entrance of the Coliseum the spices and smell of perfectly seasoned food attacks your senses. You can’t help but notice the camaraderie and friendships formed while the alcohol flows. It is in the parking lot you see the dedication and years of loyalty displayed by its fans. In the front row nearest to the stadium stands the most dedicated fan. An older man, scruffy looking stands next to his Winnebago. He is dressed in the traditional garbs for the day. His Winnebago is covered from front to back in Cardinal and Gold; from his speakers blares the schools song ‘Fight On’. Walking by he gives you the greeting of the day ‘Fight on’ and talks about the upcoming slaughter that is to commence…

The exploitation of racially and culturally offensive nicknames, mascots, and images in sports has been a topic of debate in the US and Canada over the last half-century. The controversy occurs at all levels ranging from elementary schools to professional teams. This has resulted in many teams changing either their team name, team image, or team mascot associated with their sports teams. The most well known professional teams that are not supported by their respective tribes are the Atlanta Braves, Cleveland Indians, Washington Redskins, and the Chicago Blackhawks. The Cleveland Indians “Chief Wahoo” might have been the most insulting and offensive logo, which depicts an extremely stereotypical image of an American Indian with a red face, big smile, and a feather sticking out of his hair. Although this image has long since been removed and replaced with a harmless capital letter “C”, the irreversible damage to the reputation and culture of the Native American people has been done. The National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) feels that the mascots of these teams portray negative stereotypes of Native American people and demean their native traditions and rituals.…

For quite some time now, there has been an ongoing battle in our society that has recently been brought to the national spotlight and that battle is regarding high school, colleges, universities and professional sports organizations continuing to display and or use mascots that can be considered culturally offensive and borderline racist. As stated this has been an issue for quite some time but up until recently this issue has been continuously thrown into the national spotlight by the media. This issue has gained so much national attention that the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has adopted several policies that once implemented will combat the ongoing issue of racially offensive mascots being used.…

Have you ever seen a giant before? I have. I’ve seen colossal white giants at Lake Tahoe before, and the story of the first time I experienced one up close is what will hopefully get me an A on this assignment (Mr. Maples, please have mercy on my C+). I remember how at that time the mountain’s raw and terrifying glare already frightened me enough to reconsider my actions and choose to give away to fear. What did I, a small, scrawny 9 year old boy, do in the face of these giants? Believe it or not I have already begun to set my preparations to descend from one of them.…

“Today is the day you boys become men,” That’s all I remember my coach yelling, over and over again. I was nervous because this was my first game as a varsity football player. When that big yellow school bus pulled off, everything began to move in slow motion, my heart begun to pound as if something was trying to jump out of my chest, sweat slowly made its way down my face, one trickle at a time; everything was seemed so quite. “Make sure y’all grab everything or you’ll be on the side line with me.” Coached yell to the team as we arrived to Nelson Stadium. On our way to the locker room, I seen the other team players already on the field warming up, these guys where twice my size! “What are you looking over there for boy, are you scared boy?” No sir; We was still 2 hours away from the game, but now it was time for us to take the field and warm…
