Experience is the source of knowledge whether they're bad or good. It gives us confidence, courage, and strength. It is how life teaches us to love and forgive each other. In fact, experience is the worst teacher because it gives us the test before presenting the lesson.…
East Junior high, percussion. I am currently a high school counselor for Mountain Home School District. Married to a good ole Marion boy since 1988. (not a band geek). I have two wonderful children, Tori she graduated for UCA and Cade who graduated from U of A. So, does that mean I am done?…
When looking back on military history over the past two hundred years, it is tempting to argue that battles and entire wars are exactly as they seem. This common problem is readily found in two wars fought in the 1860s: the American Civil War (1861-1865) and the Austro-Prussian War (1866). However, while it is easy to consider the American Civil War as simply a war fought by the Union to maintain territorial integrity throughout the relatively young United States, and the Austro-Prussian War as merely the “middle” war of the three wars of German Unification meant to expand “German” territory, this is not the case. In reality, the American Civil War and Wars of German Unification (as opposed to simply the Austro-Prussian War), when compared through the lenses of military, socio-political, and personal factors, are in fact quite similar and if one compares these two series of events under the assumption that the Wars of German Unification were in fact driven by the desire to found a unified German state, one can readily come to the conclusion that the American Civil War was also a war fought to establish, as opposed to maintain, a unified American state. However, before one can start comparing the two series of events, it is necessary to point out the inherent differences between the two that makes a comparison between the two somewhat thornier to defend.…
When I started Unity High School I thought that we were going to get a lot of work from my classes, and that work was going to be extremely hard. I also thought that I wasn't going to have any free time to do anything because of that, but it turned out to be wrong because the teachers give us a good amount of work but its not really hard. I thought that making friends in Unity would be hard in a sort of way but it was quit easy because everyone else was trying to make friends too. When I first got to Unity I also thought that there was going to be a few school clubs, but there is a good amount of clubs that students can join if they want to join some type of club. I think as a person I have grown more since first coming to Unity because I…
We asked them to select two (2) athletics to play within an organized league. Here the discipline of the game and learning how to cope properly with adult authority added to their overall increase. Never did we force their involvement in any action. We merely supported their efforts with positive comments on their efforts in addition to for their teammates, coaches, and officials. The entire idea is about good health and great enjoyment in sportsmanship!…
The day of the eighth grade promotion was filled with mixed emotions. I was very nervous but also excited to be leaving middle school. I was mostly nervous because I would have to walk up onto the stage in front of over a hundred people. I didn’t want to go because of how nervous I was. The school day was uneventful. We went over what we were supposed to do in the gym multiple times. Even though the day was boring and uneventful, I was nervous the entire school day. In The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, Sean Covey states, “Putting first things first also deals with learning to overcome your fears and being strong during hard moments” (Covey 106). In order to overcome my fear and stay strong I had to put first things first. I was worrying…
I learned a lesson all the way back in first grade, and that lesson has stuck with me ever since. I was coming in from recess, and I was talking to a friend of mine off to my left. Unfortunately, I was not watching where I was going. I kept barely taking glances of what was in front of me, and that was a huge mistake. Someone was running behind me, and wasn’t watching where they were going either. As I approached the building I heard yelling, but thought nothing of it. After all, recess had just finished, so obviously kids would be yelling, right? It turns out some kids had been playing tag, and decided to play until they got inside. One that was still running away, because God forbid he’d be “it,” was Nick.…
RECR 2190 Introduction to Sport Management YMCA For Youth Development, For Healthy Living, For Social Responsibility Nathan Scruggs Introduction The YMCA was founded by George Williams, a London draper. Williams was the typical man who was drawn by the Industrial Revolution. Williams and his colleagues became concerned about the lack of healthy activities for the young men and men of the future in their respective cities while the only options available were taverns and brothels. Not long after, Williams began to conduct prayer meetings and Bible readings amongst his fellow peers and coworkers in the city of London, Paris.…
Nearly 65% of children say they participate in sports to be with their friends (Statistic Brain). Sports were established so that the individual could not only exercise, but also to compete against a rival. Just as there are individual sports, there are team sports in high school. The idea of a team sport is that every single person on the field or court must work in unison to have the greatest opportunity to win. In addition to the increasing popularity of sports, the average child’s age when they join a team is decreasing. For example, the age that a child joins a basketball team has shifted from fourth grade to first grade or even kindergarten in the past decade. School is the primary factor when you review the participation in athletics,…
If I were given the opportunity to change something, I would definitely choose to go back and do over the years I was in high school. During my time there, it was more important for me to do things that were more fun than sitting in class and learning. I thought that being in school was only useful for socializing and passing time. I only went because my parents forced me and so I never put any real effort into it, my adult life suffered very much because of it. Not having a high school education set me back in a lot of ways, and it closed many potentially successful job opportunities. After finally realizing what I lost, I decided to come back to school. I finally see doors opening for me now, that could have been open for me since the beginning…
My high school graduating class consisted of 66 students, so obviously everyone knew everyone and unfortunately everyone’s business. When I was a junior, a well-known and liked senior boy had a very public breakup with his girlfriend of 3 years. They had met as freshmen and were expected to marry after finishing school. The next day he drove his car at what police estimated in excess of 100 miles per hour into a concrete railroad bridge that crossed the main road out of town. After that, the bridge became known as Burkett’s bridge and I was never able to drive through it without getting a chill and goosebumps on my arms. It’s been over 40 years since high school, and it is amazing how often I still think of Bobby and his…
I have changed a lot as soon as I began high school. I started changing by not doing my homework and not doing class projects.…
Ten years old is rough for kids, but what happened to me made those pre-teen years even worse. My parents had been divorced for two years when the unthinkable happened, my dad announced he was getting remarried. I was introduced to the woman named Melissa and her daughter Audrey, but I was unaware that the joining of the two families would impact my life forever. Though the road was not easy, Melissa helped me discover who I was meant to be, and the things she taught me affect me everyday.…
When stepping between the lines during a sporting event, athletes of all ages risk injury for the sake of enjoyment. Annually, 6.9 million high school athletes are at risk of serious brain damage while competing in athletics (Comstock). Even though many athletes go through high school athletics without ever suffering a concussion, the statistics are staggering. Of the 4,431 injuries reported in 2005-2006 season, 396 or 8.9% of those injuries were concussions (Comstock). To ensure the safety of the players, all high schools in the United States should be required to have an athletic trainer present at all athletic contests and require a series of concussion tests if the athlete is suspected to have sustained a concussion.…
I often ask myself what my purpose is in life; am I here to help others or to write a book? Maybe to sing the most somber song, but then again I do have a dreadful voice. One thing that has always caught my attention was how prodigious the human body is, so I wanted to follow a career in the health and science field. I came to admire dentists because of the experiences I had with people in the particular field. Some skills I have to help me prosper are my analytical thinking and how I relate and connect with others. My ultimate goal is to help people feel and look better, a happy smile can make a difference.…
