Though I do not carry the West Virginian accent, I have picked up a few different pronunciations or words used to describe certain objects. I did not have this revelation until I moved to a larger city in Virginia. One night as I was walking through Walmart with my friends, I asked one of them to grab a buggy. It seemed as though the world had ended. Apparently, those wheeled contraptions that contain groceries at the store are referred to as “shopping carts” in other parts of the country. To this day, I continue to refer to these objects as buggies though I now know it is uncommon. This word

One day person named tom was out camping in the woods with a bunch of rednecks. Tom brung his four-wheeler along with his camping supplies. He and the group drove out there. “Come on you old one mile an hour driving kid,” “I’m Comin and I not a kid,” Tom said. Tom was a little younger than the group. Tom was on the trail following the group's “orders”. He was out learning how to camp redneck style. Tom always hated robby, the one who yelled at him. One time when he was wrestling around with Robby’s younger son Tom slammed him, Robby’s son started crying. Then he got up and hit him with a stick on the leg. While many people would probably choose to travel to another country, a foreign universe, or something even more extraordinary, there is no place I would rather go than Pawnee, Indiana, despite the fact that it doesn’t really exist. Having been a fan of the television show Parks and Recreation for quite some time now, I can confidently say that Pawnee would be the most exciting place one could go.…

The Civil War legacy still has an impact on Americans today. Today, most Americans look at the Civil War in an awe-inspired perspective. People try to skip over the blood and ugliness that resulted because of it, and instead try to focus on the courage and heroic deeds that soldiers performed. Many today are more likely to view the war as a fight for black freedom instead of for state’s rights, which is what it had previously been known for. The South still seems proud of the Confederate flag, even though it is the cause of a lot of controversy. Some people view it as part of their heritage. Certain topics of the Civil War are still well-known throughout society. Abraham Lincoln, the Gettysburg Address, and the Emancipation proclamation are all examples of what people associate with the Civil War. People try to remember iconic people and images like these, instead of the blood, gore, and hate that took place.…

From what I recall, the day was heated, as were most days living on the top floor of a run down, income based apartment complex. Our second hand wall air conditioner sucked, and we were miserable. While annoyingly listening to the foreign toddlers run up and down the hallway in their diapers, I made the decision; it was time to move.…

The dining area of Rocking Horse Ranch was always hot and crowded during meal times, where the tired, overworked servers would bustle around attempting to provide excellent customer service for each and every inane request from the guests. I’ve heard that loud, hectic, quick-paced atmospheres filled with pretentious parents and scrambling children are almost calming sometimes. This atmosphere never brought me serenity; it gave me anxiety and stressed me out. Just the thought of sweeping melted ice cream cones off of the stained carpet and dry mopping the tiles floors gives me nightmares.…

The holiday season, a time meant for the celebration of chilly weather and cheerful greetings, is perhaps the most celebrated time in America. Each year, millions of high school students embrace the promises of the holidays as an opportunity for rest, relaxation, and freedom from the confines of scholarly pursuit. I, being one of many students weighed down by the stress of finals and academia, eagerly anticipated my holiday break that would begin the second week of December. For weeks, I planned out what I would do with my abundance of free time so that I would enjoy each day to the maximum capacity. I resolved to travel to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, where I would experience the scenic snow-capped mountains, bustling village towns, and adventurous…

A day in Memphis is not complete without the diversity in our community. As a second generation Memphian who has primarily lived in Midtown, I had the privilege of watching several different cultures in one place and especially now that I attended one of the largest public schools. Daily, I experience someone else’s world. The people I get to meet and see are from various backgrounds: race, religion, ethnicity, etc. that I may never comprehend, which is wonderful. In Memphis, it is normal to be an enigma, to have idiosyncrasies. I believe that is the heart of Memphis. What makes this heart surpass discrimination is the acceptance that follows years of diversity. My neighborhood has single mothers whose children play with the neighborhood adolescents.…

With all the recent mass shootings happening in the country, people have made the call for stricter gun control. Is this really the answer that would solve all the problems? Is stricter gun control really the answer or is it a grand illusion to fool the masses? In these two opposing essays there are very hard hitting points and facts supporting both sides. Stricter gun control is majorly demanded in democratic states where most mass shootings occur. Republican states having open carry laws and CCW are less likely to have mass shootings. Having the right to carry is a basic constitutional right, it's a deterrent, and many times it has saved more lives than taking.…
