Personal Narrative: Holes
If you dig a hole when you are born, and you add to that hole everyday chances are you won’t see the top when you’re 18. My hole is something I didn’t realize was a problem until it was too dark. My weight! For as long as I can remember I have been unhappy about the way I look. I kept telling myself I would make a ladder but after one more day of digging. In September of 2015 I finally stopped. I realized I was in too deep and it was time to change. I was inspired to change by a TV show named White Collar. The show stars a fit man who wears really nice suits. I have had a passion for suits but watching the show I realized how much better I could look in them. With some help from my parents I was able to begin eating healthy and working out.

Corn hole was the second thing I tried at Fall Fest. This game is not the most thrilling thing in the world. There were several people that were waiting to play because it was pretty much the only thing to do. I am not very good at it, which is weird because the only thing you have to do is toss a bean bag onto a wooden box that has a hole in it. I have never understood the corn hole rules so that didn’t help. The way to get points is by making it in the hole or if the bag stays on the board, but I don’t know how the scoring works. My bags always missed or bounced off the board anyways. I was going to play volleyball after corn hole, but there was no one else playing it so I just watched a bunch of other people play corn hole. Countless other…

Over time, it is devastating to witness so many unhappy people around the world who have given up their hobbies and interests all for the empty givings of material wealth and materialism- only to find out it has made them miserable instead. Moreover, the desire to achieve perfection can be fatal and life threatening, with this in mind is the tragic death of Brazilian model Ana Carolina Reston, in which her years of being called “fat” and “overweight” led to her dying from complications of anorexia and her dreams of appearing on every fashion magazine cover, coming true for the wrong reasons- her death on the runway (Phillips). Even early in one’s childhood, it has become a constant mantra in our daily lives to become what everyone wants us to become, and that failure to do so is a complete tragedy. Complications can last for one’s entire lifetime, and can leave damaging scars as physical, mental, emotional, and psychological disorders- depression, anxiety, anorexia, bulimia nervosa, to name a few, as people attempt to distort themselves to someone they do not…

If given the opportunity to correct a mistake from my past, appreciating my curves in my childhood is the first slip up that comes to my mind. Rejecting my wide hips and thick thighs,I longed to have a slender figure not unlike my friends. Ultimately, I purchased one of Shaun T’s workout systems called “Insanity” in the seventh grade. Despite the obvious signs of exhaustion that my body exhibited, I kept pushing myself to endure three workouts a day. I set intangible goals for myself such as losing ten pounds a week. After three and a half months of consistently following Shaun T’s program, I was found heavily wheezing in my sleep during my mother’s nightly rounds to check on my siblings and I. Soon after, I began to feel claustrophobic, as…

I just moved to a kid infested neighborhood. I was 18 so I had no interest in going outside and playing with the 12-14 year old kids. I thought it would be okay moving there, but they're so annoying, doing there kid stuff and writing skate boards which I've done myself and probably annoyed many people so I didn't tell them anything. Anyway my mom lives with me because step dad recently died. This house had been so weird, I don't know if it's me or like I said, the house. There's always weird noises and the weirdest part is that there is this rug that always appears in different places when I get home. My mom doesn't say anything about it because she has bad memory loss and always loses things. Someone needed to do something about this house or rug because i'm starting to get scared and lose it.…

I had been overweight since my early teens, as time passed it continued to worsen. at the age of 15 I was on the brink of obesity; I had to decide a change in my life. My life had consisted of school and video games; these combined had led me to an unhealthy lifestyle. I had dedicated years into my video game hobby, but this was the least active of my time. My hobby had to go, a new hobby had emerged: bodybuilding. Bodybuilding had given me a satisfaction that my previous hobby did not give, the satisfaction of working; that patience and efforts lead to greater satisfaction than momentary things like video…

In sixth grade, I stood before a podium that stared back at my English class. This was not how I envisioned sharing my love for reading and writing; however, it was required. My palms felt sticky, and I just knew that the entire class could see my heart as it was about to hop from the walls that kept it safe. I prayed that I would not forget the lines as I recited The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost. In sixth grade, reading, writing, and I started a relationship. Today, we have yet to break up.…

As Marines we have many traditions that we continue to pass on through the ranks. They define who we are as an organization and they set us apart from the other branches. One of the biggest traditions we have trouble continuing is formally counseling our Marines’ on the negative or positive things that they do even though there is a Marine Corps Order (MCO) that tells us how and when to conduct counseling’s. I feel that this is one of the traditions that should be practiced more within my unit. To promote continuous counseling of Marines I would hold professional military education (PME) classes, ensure that all counseling’s are being conducted with the guidance of MCO 1610.12, and to hold practical application events with the Marines in my…
