Personal Narrative: Homelessness While At Home
Driving through an alley at night and the car breaks down. I look to see how much gas I have and the tick is on E. I start to get goosebumps, chills, and I start to shake. A bunch of scenarios popping through my brain while a headache grows on me, I just wish I was at home. Down this alley, the people here are homeless, just hungry but I'm too afraid to step out of the car because these people are all strangers to me. I try to call my family and no one answers so I have to start thinking. After pondering for a good 22 minutes I realize I have a little gas in my trunk, of course enough to get me home. Scared to step out of the car I open the door and I see a homeless child. As the child starts to speak I quickly deny him and grab the gas and

A problem that persists through every part of the world is a lack of compassion for the homeless. No matter how many charities are available for people to donate to, they are often careless and forgetful. This problem stems from laziness and a lack of motivation to be involved. I decided this summer, to use the free time for painting a comic. The protagonist of this comic, I determined, was a homeless person of color living in NYC. Notwithstanding I have been always especially active in my community, and have volunteered in several programs that benefit homeless people of color and LGBTQ, the research I made about homeless people in NY was an eye opener.…

I am one of the 220,000 that are homeless each and every night in Australia. Us as homeless people, we don’t really get seen as ‘’positive’’ people, we’re mostly seen as negative. On a cold, brisk snowy night in New York City little did I know I was about to make an encounter with someone I'd never forget. I was waiting for a friend in McDonald's so she could get her food and stay inside for warmth, when I realized someone not too far behind me was talking. Startled, I turned around I saw a homeless man wrapped in torn up blankets, shaggy, undone brown hair and trying to keep warm like the rest of us. My first instinct was to stay clear until a woman had drooped her purse and money rolled around his feet, as he bent down to retrieve the money to all our disbelief he handed her the money and told her something extraordinary. As he handed the woman back her money with shaky hands, he looked down and exclaimed how,"Money…

Mrs. Davis said, “Absolutely, this morning I was getting ready for my meeting when I heard what happened to Katherine and saw you guys over. I tried to get someone else to take the meeting and couldn’t find anyone willing to do it. When I came home, I called the police department to tell them about the man in the backyard. They told me to wait until you came back and tell you about the homeless man. He is probably the murderer.” Pointing her finger toward the detective, Mrs. Davis added.”Kathy was my friend.”…

A couple of years ago I got kicked out of my house. Homeless, I had literally no where to stay or anyone to turn to. I had never opened up to anyone about my home life situation. Due to my upbringing in a predominantly rich, christian neighborhood I didn’t feel like anyone would understand my abusive parents or try to help. When I got kicked out I was sure that was the end of the line for me.…

Known as the “City of Trees” for its abundance of greenery, my hometown of Sacramento, California could also be called the “City of the Homeless”. There are staggering numbers of homeless Sacramentans and a significant amount of people who lack consistent access to nightly shelter. On any given night, the homeless population of Sacramento County totals nearly 2,700 people (www.sacramentostepsforward.org), and this number is on the rise.…

Having grown up in a single parent home with two sisters who did not complete high school, made the pressure for me to succeed unimaginable. The constant reminder of achieving greatness has stuck with me since I was eight years old. Throughout middle school I was top of my class, in high school I graduated cum laude with a 4.4 GPA and currently in my 1st year of college I am top of my intermediate/college algebra class, I scored the highest grade out of all 5 of my psychology teachers classes, and I have an A in my Philosophy class. My educational goals consist of gaining knowledge throughout my entire life, achieving higher than my goals, being as involved as I can possibly be with my college/ community, and continuing to prosper. Ever since…

No Snapchat, no Instagram, no games , or texting your friends all day this would be what would happen for me if I lived off the grid. I know the million dollars would amazingly help my parents and siblings for our education mainly college. I honestly think I could live off the grid for a full year and be okay with it. I love using the Internet to help me will all sorts of thing like Little Free Libraries or discovering new things to create on Pinterest but I also know I could go without those things. It would definitely be a very hard challenge for me in a variety of ways to live of the grid.…

From a young age, my life has been presented with many adversities. Some of these hardships included childhood obesity, being bullied, and homelessness. After my parents divorced when I was young, my dad forced my mother and I to leave our home. As a result, we were homeless. However, we were able to overcome this hardship thanks to the generosity of others. Coming from a low-income background, my mother and I could only afford unhealthy foods. My eating pattern along with lack of exercise lead to me weighing over 280 pounds when I was in the 7th grade. Due to my obesity, I was often bullied by children in my school. In order to hide the pain, I was feeling, I would look towards food as a comfort. One day in 8th grade I had decided that I did not want to live my life this way anymore. As a result, I started eating healthier and exercising regularly. Through this process I was able to lose over 100 pounds. By experiencing obesity, being bullied, and homelessness at a young age, I was able to develop the characteristics of being strong, driven towards success, and caring for others. Through my experiences, I have decided that I want to encourage children who are experiencing similar situations that they can overcome them.…

Today, I worked in the garden and mended and sewed clothes. Because we’re in the midst of the Great Depression, I have to work during the days instead of going to school. I’m luckier than most, though. We don’t have much money, but we have plenty of food. We grow our own food and buy meat from people who raise pork for pigs. Items like sugar and coffee are rationed, and stamps are distributed to control the amount given to each family depending on the amount of people in the household. We also have a vegetable garden we use to supply food, and we can extras for the winter. My dad is a Methodist minister and my mom is a schoolteacher, so we’ve recovered pretty quickly.…

There have been situations where I felt that I have been treated unfairly. I would like to share one that occurred in the spring of 8th grade. As an animal lover, I wanted to find an opportunity that would give me a chance to surround myself in an environment with many types of lovely animals. I went to find an opportunity at a pet shelter that needed volunteers. I walked inside the shelter and asked the front person if there was a volunteer opportunity available. I was told that there was no opportunity available, but I did not think anything about it. I went home, then after a few hours went by, I texted my friend, who is Caucasian, if I could come over to her house. I received a text back saying that she was busy volunteering at the same pet shelter that I had gone to just a few hours ago.…
