Personal Narrative: How Acting Changed My Life
When I was young, I was one of those kids who changed their minds on what they wanted to be when they grew up approximately every five minutes. However, this changed when I discovered acting. Acting has made me more outgoing, less afraid to interact with other people, and more empathetic- with the added bonus of being a lot of fun. I discovered the wonders of acting by a small part in a high school production of Willy Wonka. Even though I was just an Oompa Loompa, I quickly fell in love with the sets, characters, costumes, stages, and even the other actors. So, I went on to take bigger roles- I was an evil stepsister in Cinderella, followed by increasingly bigger parts in school plays, a lead in an obscure musical at the Stage Door Theatre …show more content…

I often still have days that I tell my mom what I’d like to eat when we’re out at a restaurant, then awkwardly gesture at her to order for me when the waiter comes around. There are also the times where I turn down going to get fries at McDonalds because I’d have to order it myself, but it’s gotten a lot better and a lot easier than it was before- I can actually do these things sometimes now! In acting, you’re on set with all of these outgoing, exciting people, which can make you more confident and as a result, lessen the hold of social anxiety. In acting, you literally put yourself into the shoes of another person, be it you’re thinking and being them, or, you’re actually wearing their shoes, as part of your costume. Sometimes it’s hard to have empathy and think like someone else, because you’ve only ever thought like yourself, until you start acting. You have to become someone else, with a whole new set of experiences and opinions- and even though that someone becomes a bit of you, it’s still definitely a character that is not you, and it definitely works out your empathy muscles for other uses. Acting has made me an improved version of myself, with more of an outgoing personality, less social anxiety, and more empathy. Acting really works on some parts of one’s self, and everyone should try it at some point and see if they enjoy it, and if it works similar magic on them as it did on

My greatest artistic experience is playing the role of Sweeney Todd. It was the hardest role I’ve ever played. I got to play Sweeney Todd at fifteen years old. I was about to finish my freshman year of high school. I don’t believe many other actors get the opportunity to play a role as diverse as Sweeney Todd. The background research I did on the character was incredible. To become a murderer and live what Sweeney went through was extremely difficult. One reason was because I’d never loved someone in that way before. In order for me to gain that emotional experience, I had to put my own mother in the scenario. I also never felt revenge or rage in that kind of way before. My director was able to get that out of me over the month of character…

Throughout the past two years at Staten Island Academy, this learning environment has given me many opportunities that I could not have gotten at any other school. I'm not the most athletic, but I do very much enjoy playing sports. Here at the Academy middle school, I was able to experience any sport that I wanted to play, without a tryout system. The music and theater program here has given me countless opportunities to better my skills as an actor and a baritonist. I have been able to act in two plays, "Schoolhouse Rock Live, Jr." and "Cyrano deBurgershack." They helped me learn the ins and outs of acting, as I was a beginner before I came to the Academy. In the orchestra, I have appeared in 5 concerts, all of which have been immensely successful thanks to our conductor, Ms. Wheatley. There have also been many truly amazing teachers that have guided me to academic success. Specifically, Mr. Levine helps me to understand…

Being in Oliver definitely changed my attitude towards theatre. Actors embarrass themselves sometimes! The audience isn’t ever holding a script! It really is nothing to stress over, and messing up is a learning experience. Even though I was afraid of saying a line wrong, I realized that it really isn’t that big of a deal. Seeing one of my peers mess up opened by eyes for the better, and helped me realize that I had nothing to worry…

After I retired out of the Navy, I became a deputy sheriff. I only studied acting to become a better undercover deputy. All I wanted to do was bring down the bad guys. I had no intention of becoming an actor. My thought was, “What would my fellow officers say if they heard that?!” They would never let me live that down. However, the more I studied the ART of acting I realized that it was affecting me inside in a way I couldn't explain, but I needed to know and explore. That's when I decided to pack my truck and tell the sheriff what I decided to do. He replied "I think you're nuts, and I'm sorry to lose you. You're a good officer, but I support your decision.” I climbed into my truck and headed to Hollywood with NO idea of what I was about to get into. Yet I HAD to follow my heart. Now 37 years later, I KNOW it was the right decision, and that passion has just grown throughout the…

In that light, it also teaches me how to not abuse the power that is given to me. As assistant director, I am given the ability to kick students out of the show, cancel rehearsals for personal reasons, and pick favorites when students get out of hand. However, this does not constitute me to misuse the powers however I see fit. My job is to help everyone, so everything that I do as assistant director should be completely selfless. This experience also teaches me how to handle being a part of something bigger than myself. In school, the object of learning is for you to know the information and for you to apply the information to get high grades. In this job, my direction affects the reputation of the entire theatre department at my high-school. Everything that I do affects my director, the cast, all the other directors and stage managers, and then finally myself. Putting myself last for certain projects, like I do as assistant director, will allow me to be successful both independently and…

Improvisation is a very important skill to have because it helps any actor develop self confidenc. What used to be a collection of party games and acting exercises has become a legitimate form of entertainment all its own. Improv can help you develop creativity and imagination because they need to think outside of the box to make it work and turn it into something interesting and/or funny. It would teach actors to listen to each other while onstage, help them develop interesting characters, and teaches them a bigger variety of choices to do in a performance.
