Personal Narrative: How To Fall Off A Horse
There are many ways that you can fall off a horse. You can fall with grace, dismount with style, and take a digger with dignity. You can also land face first in the sand, landing in such a way that can be best described as a stingray. I was the stingray on that fine July evening. I have also been described as the disgraceful dismount, the grit toothed wonder, and the dirt consultant. Most people say you have to fall off seven times before you are considered a true rider, if that was the case I would be an equestrian extraordinaire.
It was a warm July evening. Training Centers at the Barron County Fairgrounds had gone off without a hitch. To close off the night, we decided to showcase some of our hunter jumper skills. My friend Sierra, my sister

That little five year old is now twelve years old. Instead of a little POA of unknown breeding, she is now riding a green appendix mare who is five years old , 16.1 hands tall, and has some of the most recognizable breeding in the Quarter Horse world. The mare is known for her temper flare-ups, on the ground and under saddle. If she doesn’t want to do something she is going to tell you in the most dramatic way she can, often sending that little twelve year old for much more than eight seconds. There has only been one time when she has been successful in her temper tantrums. It was a slightly chilly Sunday morning. Mo and I were warming up for our Hunt Seat classes at the Rein and Shine WSCA Show. Whenever we would go near the gate she would drift, causing us to cut multiple people off. After the fourth or fifth time doing this, her actions became more violent. She began to drift to the gate and then kick my sister’s horse for no apparent reason. I got after her a bit and returned to the rail, thinking that the next round couldn’t be any worse. Boy was I wrong. The next time we came around she kicked a stranger’s horse and turned quick on her hindquarters to the left. She then began to rear up, getting higher with each go she took. I flew off her left side, a girth that had been loosened had been my downfall. When I looked at her from the ground, my saddle was firmly stuck to her side, ready to be reset. After the saddle was reset, I was back in the saddle and ready to give Mo a piece of my mind. Thankfully, I’ve stuck the whole eight seconds on every ride she has given me since then. Sometimes, I even get a

All of these facts plus more led to one conclusion: equine-human relationships can be therapeutic. The participants in this study recovered significantly with help from their equine counter-parts. The horses gave the equestrians a purpose; a reason to get up each day. However, while this research was a success, Yorke, Adams, and Coady remark, “riding is not for everyone.” Still, equine therapy is a promising option for a wide range of…

On the morning of July 19th, Jenny was enjoying a ride on her 17 year old quarter horse mare Dottie. The pare loped leisurely around short side of the arena, when suddenly, Dottie’s head dropped and she seemed to suck back in an effort to prevent herself from falling. Within moments both jenny and Dotty crashed to the ground. Described by witnesses as “the worst crash they’d ever seen”, Jenny was rushed to the emergency room with her shoulder fractured in two places (Ruldolph, JA). While most horse people will agree, accidents do occur, something seemed different about this particular incident. What actually went wrong? For weeks following after, Dottie still seemed off in her behavior. Some days she would be normal, but on others she would lose her appetite and seemed to struggle to stay on her feet. Even after being examined by several veterinarians who passed the mares strange behavior as episodes of colic, Dottie’s condition fail to improve. Finally a local vet suggested testing for a disease called Hyperkalemic Periodic Paralysis. Dottie’s results came back positive.…

In this particular arena, and in most others there were cliques. Cliques in the horse world are very similar as to what they are during high school, you are either in or you are out. I was not considered part of the clique, because I did not portray the skills they were looking for. I was younger and when the better riders would not ride with me, the words were bullets shooting down my confidence. Consequently for them, it did not knock me down but raise me up.…

I had no idea why she was asking me if I still wanted to ride. I was flooded with such conflicted feelings. I had been doing horseback riding for 8 ½ years; I couldn’t even comprehend not having riding as the center of my life. On other hand, I was becoming aware that I was getting really sick of freezing all winter at the barn, and constantly relying on an animal’s health in order to do my sport. I was so tired of the weather dictating if I could do my sport or not. Also, I was lonely at the barn. I wanted to be doing something with kids my own age. At that point, the only people I rode with were adults because they were the ones jumping the levels of jumps that I…

Horse showing is not an easy task. It is hours upon hours of going in circles and patterns around the arena. You have to know all the right patters and ques as well as having everything spot on and perfect. It is perfect chaos. I smiled to myself at how perfect this show was going. I’ve only been showing for 2 years and so far I’ve gotten $10, 1 ribbon, and a good job from my trainer. If you were me, you would understand how exciting it was. My trainer, Dominique, is also the real owner of my horse and my same age best friend. I had never won anything at a horse show before. More than anything I got mad because I could never get Drifter to listen or did something wrong. So, yeah, It was a pretty special night. However, sitting here…

Time is winding down and the past thirty nine weeks has been nothing short but amazing. It has been full of different emotions and feelings. From the stretching of the skin to the sudden movement I have never felt before. It was all a new experience, but the feeling was indescribable. After a restless night, the sunrise appeared before I knew it. The pain was unbearable, but after several hours and a couple of good pushes you were here. I was extremely exhausted, but the relief was absolutely amazing. At first sight I fell in love with you. Not for how you look, just for who you are. I never thought I could feel affection like this. What is this? Is this how it's assume to feel or even resemble? It's kind of insane how you, only one individual,…

Today was the day. The big day. My election for Lieutenant Governor of Division 2B for Key Club, an international service club, was today. Fear and anxiety pricked my skin in rapid movements emanating from every pore. I rehearsed my speech for the fifth time that day. Upon arrival at the Fairfax Library, I urged myself to remain calm. I quickly scouted out the other girls who were present; one girl was dressed professionally with a folder in her hand. I knew that was my competition. The girl spoke eloquently and genially, she radiated enthusiasm and a certain warmth that I did not have. With every question that was asked, she answered with a smooth smile and high-pitched tone that was dripping with sincerity. I bristled inside; I had just been slapped. I was shrouded in a cloud of anxiety and anxiousness. Suddenly, I was dragged from my reverie.…

Finally, when I moved to New Orleans I started volunteer work at the Children’s Hospital and helped with pop up clinics for the Latino community twice. Overall I found that helping others shouldn't be something seen as duty or mandatory, it should be spontaneous. Through others experiences and hardships we learn and grow as human beings, not only did I enjoy helping others but I felt that it helped me with my problems. Having moved around so much and meet so many people and living by myself so many years I came to truly be thankful for my blessings and specially for my hardships. Hermann Hesse once said, "I have always believed, and I still believe, that whatever good or bad fortune may come our way we can always give it meaning and transform it into something of value." Helping others made me realize that we all need help and that my way to help others would be through their health. It also taught me not to judge anybody, especially if you don't know what they have been through. I am hard believer that everything happens for a reason, and all the weekends I spend watching my parents help others helping others myself made me the determined person that I am today. Finally, the most important lesson I learned was to never give up, no matter how hard the task is or how bad the problem is there will always be someone willing to help and you can always be both sides to that, the helper or the one who needs…

You can learn how to recover from a fall (physically and metaphorically), even though it’s pretty hard; because for being successful in any activity you need to learn how to step up and continue with the same courage you started, I can say that with horse jumping I have proved to myself that the phrase “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” is absolutely right, after falling down you need to go over the same obstacle with more concentration and strength. That’s how many world champions have gotten were they got, as Rodrigo Pessoa from Brazil, who was claimed champion in 1998 with his horse Gandini Lianos, or as Jos Lansink, who was claimed champion in 2006 with his horse Cavalor; they…

Football has always been a big part of my life. As a young boy I would day dream of making insane touchdowns, making tackles that would leave man stuck in the ground, and even winning the heisman trophy. In 7th grade I had begged my mother endlessly to sign me up for pee wee football because she would always worry about the risks of football. After finally getting her to sign me up, we went straight into the season. I chose to play running back because as a 12-year-old I was remarkably fast having timed 5.3 in the 40 yard-dash. After a few weeks in the season we approached the playoffs and found out our opponent for the first round of the playoffs were the jaguars who were undefeated. Our team didn’t have the best chemistry on…
