When Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans in 2005 the Zeitoun family could not decide on whether or not to flee or to stay in the city. In the end, Abdulrahman, more commonly known as Zeitoun, stayed behind and Kathy took the children to visit her family in Baton Rouge. What was his justification to stay behind? What happened in his past that gave him the faith to remain during the storm? The book, Zeitoun, answer many of these questions through anecdotes. Dave Eggers uses anachronistic anecdotes to develop characters throughout the story. These stories help describe individual character backgrounds, highlight character traits that will become important later and show the healing process after the storm.…
Athlete. Born May 6, 1937, in Clifton, New Jersey. In 1966, at the height of his boxing career, Carter was wrongly convicted—twice—of a triple murder and imprisoned for nearly two decades. During the mid-1970s, his case became a cause celébrè for a number of civil rights leaders, politicians, and entertainers. He was ultimately exonerated, in 1985, after a United States district court judge declared the convictions to be based on racial prejudice.…

Last year 23 September 2012. I had a resident called “Mrs X” she was a 72year-old widowed living at ---, a Nursing Care Home. She’s not a religious type of person as she was Atheist. She has lived in the home for the past two years, and during that time I was assigned as her key worker. Mrs X had One Son and 3 grand daughters they are all regular visitors to the home. She has recently been diagnosed with renal failure, and her life expectancy is only a couple of months without dialysis. In the past Mrs X has made it clear that when her “time comes” she wants to be able to stay at Belmont House, and “go quietly”. She has stated that she does not want any treatment that will prolong her life. This means she has chosen not to accept dialysis.…
Hurricane Katrina swept away the gulf coast on August 25, 2009. Katrina was the most monstrous storm that has ever visited the coast and was considered an amalgam of tropical waters and dusty winds. It was the deadliest hurricane of category five causing horrendous damage and traumatizing scenes. Many lives were taken away and many lives have changed.…
There were Monuments as large as buildings. Museums full of information things from decades ago. The most interesting to me was the Washington Monument. It was taller than most buildings in Washington. The Washington Monument is one of the most famous Monuments in the world. This amazingly tall Monument has something behind it called the reflecting pool.…
As stated before, I decided to do my participant observation exercise in the nursing home during the evening where the residents are getting ready to go to supper and come back and go to bed. At 4:30, the residents were just getting back from chapel and needed to use the restroom to go to supper, which started at 5:30. Many residents had their lights on and wanted to be the first ones to be attended. I knew this as I walked down the hallway I could hear some residents tell the CNAs to help them. During this time, the nurses were working on passing the medicine and charting other things. At 5:30, the residents wanted to go to supper as soon as possible so that they would not be late. When everyone was at the dining room, the CNAs had to help feed those who could not feed themselves. by 6:30, everyone wanted to be out of the dining room to go to bed. During this time, the nurses were once again passing medicine to those who get it after meals. The CNAs once again had many lights to answer as fast as they could to ensure that the resident was happy and pleased with their service. During this time, resident 1 had her light on and when it was explained to her that those who were at a risk of falling if unattended had to be attended first. She got upset and said that…
Everyone has peaceful and strange events that occurred in their lifetime. There are several chances that one expects something pleasant to happen and it comes true. On the other side, an occasion doesn’t appear when somebody expects it. I can explain this with my personal account of Hurricane Sandy, an event that occurred on October 29, 2012 and ended on November 2, 2012. This affected the northeast portion of the United States. As a result of this event, I had lost power, had a tough time doing tasks, and took my education away. On the other hand, I was thankful that the disaster ended a few days later.…
I was on my third day of residential care placement; the staff had just started to take turns for their morning tea break so I took the time to catch up on my case study patient’s medical history in the nurses’ station. Within a few minutes the Manager of the rest home ran in to gather the blood pressure machine and bandages. She informed another student nurse and myself to “take these to Max’s (pseudonym) room NOW, while I call an ambulance”.…
In order to gain Mary's trust and reliability, as a manager of the care home I have to advice Mary's social worker to offer her the affection and support she has never received, in the care home. In order to effectively inform the social worker about the details of Mary's situation- a very thorough verbal discussion will have to take place. This also involves a group conversation with the social worker and Mary, who can assist her point of views- as well as her troubles being expressed. This way, we would be able to understand Mary's personal perspective as well as being able to find the solution to gain her trust in the care home. On the other hand, Mary's slurred speech and hearing impairment may be an issue to deal with in terms of maintaining a conversation, however there are many ways to effectively overcome these struggles and help her enrich trustworthiness in the care home. It is important to create a line of communication between myself, the social worker and the patient so that we can already build a stable relationship that has been gained through communication, involving the exchange of intentions and thoughts which ensues the gaining of sympathy and mutual understanding. The aim of this interaction is to give Mary the love and care she has not received in her abusive home, as…
As I got out of my car and started walking to the front door, all I could do was admire this beautiful building that resembled a ranch-style home. When I walked through the front door, the smell of mashed potatoes, baked chicken breast, and wheat rolls filled my nose; it was as if I was walking into my own grandma’s house. In front of me there was a group of people; some in wheelchairs, some using walkers, and others on the couch shouting out answers to the latest crossword puzzles. Walking through these doors brought me to the realization that I was soon going to learn everything about each one of these people. This included how to specially care for and assist them with their everyday needs in this place that they call their home. I did not…

On the early morning of August 29th, 2005 on the Gulf Shore near New Orleans a treacherous hurricane struck with one hundred and forty mph winds. Hundreds of thousands of residents near the area evacuated days before the storm was supposed to hit. Katrina was one of the most powerful storms to ever form in the Atlantic Ocean and affected the Bahamas, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi and many other areas. Nearly six months after the hurricane, more than 1,300 bodies were found and hundreds are still unaccounted for. This hurricane was a level five and affected many lives in the south. Once this all happened reporters were quick on the scene. There were many false stories being told and it turned the attention from the sadness of the victims and natural damage done to unrealistic, wild tales giving New Orleans a bad name.…
All my life I’ve always wanted to be a Meteorologist. As a child I would always stand outside during Hurricane season and look up at the sky and try to predict what would happen next. My goals in life are to graduate from high school and go to college in Florida. I would start off at Santa Fe community college for 2 years and major in Science and then transfer to the University of Florida where I will then continue my education and receive a Bachelor in Atmospheric Science. While at the University of Florida I plan to also intern at local news broadcasting as a Meteorologist. In 5 years I see myself out of college working at Channel 4 News for Jax in Jacksonville, Florida as a Meteorologist grossing over $91,579 a year. In 10 years, I plan to continue working at Channel 4 News for Jax and potentially embarking upon a family and Marriage.…
At the age of 12, I was scrolling through the channel guide looking for something to watch like most bored kids do at that age, when I finally gave up. I ended up randomly turning to channel 62 where they were showing an episode of Storm Chasers. In my opinion, it was a show about crazy people risking their lives in pursuit of their passions. As I continued watching it, I developed a sudden interest in how nature could create something so beautiful yet hazardous.…
