Personal Narrative: Hurricane Recovery
Hurricane Repair There have been many moments in my life that have made an impact on myself or others, but one that I will always remember is my People to People trip to Tulane University in New Orleans. This week allowed me to come out of my shell, grow as a person, and help hundreds of people who suffered after hurricane Katrina. Along with my growth as a person and help towards others, I had the opportunity to learn about the culture of New Orleans while touring the beautiful city. My trip to New Orleans was a long one. The car ride there was filled with my anxiously waiting to meet the group of peers that I would be with for the next week. I was excited to see the marshy swamps that held lurking alligators, but most of all I was terrified for the moment that my parents would leave me alone with hundreds of complete strangers for a whole week. The car ride that …show more content…
One second the rain would be pouring down with such force that you could not see a foot in front of you, and the roads were flooded up to your knees, and the next it was sunny and sticky. The humidity was so high that you constantly felt damp, and your hair frizzed the second you walked outside, but nonetheless it was a beautiful place to see. I walked in the door to stacks of suitcases and tons of kids just like me playing games and getting to know each other. They handed me my lanyard, key, and name tag, and it was time to say goodbye to my parents until the week was over. I was no longer excited , but now apprehensive and wondering if it was too late to back out. I knew it was, and finally said goodbye retreating to my assigned table. There were only two other kids sitting at my table when I arrived but they already seemed to be best friends. By the end of the night I was exhausted, but reeling with excitement for the adventures I would have with my new friends. I texted my mom to say goodnight, and set my alarm for five the next

In the New Orleans Times article, “Louisiana Flood of 2016: The 12 Stages of Recovery,” by JR Ball, updates his audience on the progression Louisiana has made. Although Louisiana residents realize the road to recovery will be long and hard, many are growing tired of all the devastation that has taken place. They constantly wonder how much devastation they can handle. Thome Dore, a frustrated Louisiana resident states, “People are saying they want things to return to normal, but who knows what the new normal will look like” (Ball 1)? In some communities, the flood has helped residents come together and help one another out. On the other hand, the flood has caused conflict with those who have suffered little damage versus major damage to…

Everyone has peaceful and strange events that occurred in their lifetime. There are several chances that one expects something pleasant to happen and it comes true. On the other side, an occasion doesn’t appear when somebody expects it. I can explain this with my personal account of Hurricane Sandy, an event that occurred on October 29, 2012 and ended on November 2, 2012. This affected the northeast portion of the United States. As a result of this event, I had lost power, had a tough time doing tasks, and took my education away. On the other hand, I was thankful that the disaster ended a few days later.…

It was the first time I had ever been to Reynosa, Mexico, and I was very excited as well as nervous about the trip. I planted a church in Texas and arranged to take a time of five people to go and build two houses. None of us spoke the language and would be completely dependent upon our interpreter for all communication. We were really not fully prepared for the amount of poverty we encountered just below the boarder of Mexico and America. The shanty town had no running water as well is little electrical power, it was like being thrown back in time.…

The move wasn’t that difficult for me. Sure, I was sad to leave all of my friends and my great grandmother, but there was a whole new world waiting for me up there. In 2008, we drove 12 hours, leaving New Orleans, Louisiana behind and entering our new home, Charlotte, North Carolina.…

It was a sunny afternoon in New Orleans, the passengers were starting to board the steamboat and every one of them was smiling while they were entering the boat. The passengers had so much joy and excitement for being part of a ride along the Mississippi river (Déjà Vu), this joy and excitement made me think that an event like this meant something very special for the people of this city. When I knew I had been accepted into the University of Southern Mississippi, I immediately realized that I was going to live close to the Mississippi river and to New Orleans. One month ago I went to New Orleans and I saw for first time the Mississippi river; I was amazed by its size and by the strong…

I flew back to New Orleans and it was just the way I remembered it. The temperature was 98 degrees and the humidity was so high that reapplying deodorant is necessary down here. The French/Spanish architecture gives it a romantic and mysterious appeal. The air was not as fresh as I had wished it was but at least I could still breathe. The air smelled of urine that had been there for years. The streets looked as if a tornado had swept litter back and forth through the town. Residents, not only tourists, walked past it as if trash belonged on the ground.…

After school on Tuesday, my mom and stepdad were still deciding if we should evacuate because of Hurricane Matthew. Later they made a decision “We are going to leave early tomorrow morning.” We were going to go stay at my stepdad’s parents house at Lake Jackson. Everyone woke up at 4:30 except me, I hadn’t packed so I got up at 4:00. I usually snooze about two times but today I adapted to just waking up. My dogs were already up like every other day. My dog Sugar hates being in the car but Bear, my stepbrothers dog, is okay, he just sleeps. Now, almost everyone was up except for my mom, she was still sleeping. Once everyone was awake we left.…

During the time that I went on the trip, life had become very stressful for me. I had gotten into the School of Architecture at the University of Houston but due to family issues I wouldn’t be able to go, I desperately needed a job, and I constantly fought with my parents, who were also fighting with each other. I couldn’t do anything on the weekends or spend time with friends or do anything of that nature at all, but so the trip…

Hot. Humid. In other words, the usual New Orleans summertime day. Now all the local media were buzzing with the new Katrina tracking information. Many people were going about their usual Saturday routines. Some were still oblivious to what was happening. Greg had the kids. I got up, cleaned the house, and washed all the clothes, so if we left (I hadn’t decided for sure yet), I wouldn’t have to do it when we returned. I filled up at a nearby gas station and went shopping. There was an eerie feeling of nervous uncertainty in the air. Supplies were beginning to run out and there were long lines at the gas stations. You knew that people were asking the same question: “Is this the one?” The process of contra-flow (all Interstate 10 lanes going…

Stepping off the plane and arriving to Jamaica was a very big culture shock. I was in awe of the beautiful landscape that covered the island. The food was different and the climate was very hot and sticky. On the third night I threw up because my body was not adjusting to all the changes. Closing my eyes, I wished that I could go home and stay in my bed. I wanted to be in air conditioning and sleep for the rest of the day. But I couldn’t. I needed to get up. I needed to help build the school. So that’s what I did. I got up from sitting next to the toilet, drank some water, had breakfast, and helped my group pour concrete.…

Our volunteer of the month is someone who goes beyond the call of duty every month. This person is there for his family, friends, and church members always in the background. This person never intrudes upon others; however, he ensures that things get done. He is a husband, father, brother, uncle, papa, and a silent hero. During Hurricane Irma, he worked tirelessly to make sure people (not just family and friends) were safe and had their shutters up. While he and his family were at the shelter, he kept people calmed and played Christian movies; furthermore, not ashamed to assure them that God sits high and looks low. He and his wife went and rescued six elderly people who were not even aware that they were under mandatory evacuation after the…

The car screamed to a halt, four men wearing masks jumped out and ran into the nearest building, I looked around. The street was deserted except for me. The plan was working; and it was not the first time that I went on a mission like this. We planned these robberies in sparse, quiet neighborhoods that did not have many people, stores, or emergency response teams. Together, the five of us made up a team that is sweeping the nation. We rob the most unsuspecting stores, which do not have security cameras or money vaults. We find that these stores surprisingly have the most money in their registers.…
