Personal Narrative: I Believe Words Can Hurt
I Believe Words Can Hurt

I believe that words can hurt. Have you ever wondered what you have or had said in your lifetime that has hurt people? Or have you ever experienced getting hurt by words someone else has said? Every time you say something you have to really think if you want to say it or not, you can’t just say it without thinking, well, maybe you can, but should you? In my own experience when I was eleven years old I first came to the US and I remember that I didn’t speak any English and people started saying bad things, even though I tried to pretend not to hear anything. I always thought about it all day long and tried my best to forget it. In my experience I think it’s hard not to think about it, but also not impossible.

Even if they don’t mean anything by saying it, those words affect you and you think about it even if you say you are “fine” when you are not. People can really hurt someone just by saying one or two words, but sometimes the one that said those hurting words think about it and then regret it.

Words can hurt because since I was old enough to understand words and their meaning I knew what was bad and what was good. I have live long enough and I can say that people can hurt you with their words. My Friends, Family and other people have gone through it and they can say the same.

There are different ways you can get hurt, depends on the person saying in it, you can get hurt by family and friends. Words if you think about it they are not that important but their meaning they are. If you look into the words meaning you should think about what you really want to say and what not. Words for me are a big deal even if you don’t mean it they do hurt, me and other people. I have said words that have and had hurt some people.

Words can be dangerous and can hurt all people. Words can carry more than you think, but they mean more when you express them. Words are beautiful in a way and painful in another. I have friends which have got hurt by words, I have and I can tell you have got hurt

Language is central to every single culture on Earth. Not only is it the human race’s main method of communication, it also is the only truly accurate way to record the human experience with integrity. Therefore, language shows most everything about who we are, from one’s homeland to education and everything in between. For instance, in Firoozeh Dumas’ The ‘F Word,’ a young Iranian girl is judged for who she is without any of her contemporaries taking a moment to figure out why.…

The adage “sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me” is erroneous. The use of politically incorrect language may not break bones but it does inflict pain. As specified by Peg Streep, there is a connection between emotional and physical pain, so when a person is emotionally distraught, it can be compared to the pain felt when being physically harmed (Streep). According to “A Word Gone Wrong” by Lawrence Downes, words hold insinuations (Downes). For example, the word “retard” denotes a mentally handicapped person, but it connotes a person that is considered an imbecile. The word “retard” was not established to inflict pain on the people in which it defines; however, it has…

Deborah Tannen explains so logically how linguistics can cause all types of mixed messages during an interaction with someone. Even when our intentions are good, it's now easy to see how we could be misinterpreted and how fights and long held grudges could be avoided or amended. Searching for signs of acceptance and belonging, we find signs of disapproval and rejection. It seems that the seeds of family love so often give way to a harvest of criticism and judgment.…
