I wake up at 6 am, tired and unfocused. Well doesn’t matter it’s time to get ready for school. Brush your teeth, comb your hair, get dressed, eat breakfast, and leave the house. I get to school, boom 1st period the test I forgot about. I work through the test just barely finishing. Next day I get it back and no surprise, C+. Many students are not getting enough sleep on a day to day basis. I believe that in order to fix this problem school start times should be pushed back. Not only will this solve the problem of lack of sleep but it can increase overall performance in school.
A big problem in our society today is lack of sleep in young adults. The National Sleep Foundation recommends that teen get anywhere between 8 to 10 hours of sleep each night, however, few actually get that much sleep. This can lead to depression, weight gain, and getting in more car accidents. Sometimes the grades of these students can drop because of the lack of focus. It is true bus schedules would be changed, it would be more difficult to attend after school activities and school sports could prevent students being home before 5 pm. Bus schedule issues could be avoided if there was a district wide time change meaning all levels of education, this gives the benefits of the extra sleep to all grades K-12. After school activities often don't begin until 6 pm or later which gives over an hour to complete all homework and other possible thing you would have to complete on a certain day. Others argue that if school were to start later students would in return stay up later at night rather than taking advantage of the extra sleep. It is very possible this could happen however, it is the student's choice and if you were able to wake up then next morning feeling fully rested why would you not take advantage of
