    8. Surfactants are wetting agents that lower the surface tension of a liquid, allowing easier spreading, and lower the interfacial tension between two liquids. Surfactants improve water's ability to wet things, spread over surfaces, and seep into dirty clothes fibres. One end of their molecule is attracted to water, while the other end is attracted to dirt and grease. So the surfactant molecules help water to get a hold of grease, break it up, and wash it away. Soaps and detergents are both emulsifying agents and…

It’s midnight and as I expected, a black Ford F-150 Truck with tinted windows pulls up to my house. I walk outside holding a backpack with my portable speakers and a baseball bat. However, I quickly change my mind and leave the baseball bat inside the house. I hop into the back seat of the truck and am greeted by four large burly kids. “What’s up Matt?” says Ben who is sitting in the drivers seat. With music blasting, Ben takes off the parking brake and presses his foot down onto the gas pedal. Soon we are heading down dark winding roads as we listen to music from Captain Murphy, which contributes to our mischievous mood. Finally we arrive.…

I was a camp counselor at Camp Wabikon ‒ a co-ed overnight summer camp located in Temagami, Ontario for children who are 6-15 years of age. Along with teaching Red Cross swimming and lifesaving and Tennis, I was my cabin's 'parent' for six weeks. Therefore, I was present with the children at all times. In essence, I was the leader of my cabin's the physical, social and mental development. The main things I learned were the importance of time management and organization , as I had to plan lessons for swimming and Tennis while taking care of my cabin; conflict resolution between campers; and the ability to plan and foresee events (I had to plan camp-wide events and activities for all campers).…

There has been many cases in which I have helped an outsider feel welcome. One time in particular is when I played tag with this little boy at church since he was new and no one else played with him. Originally, I was outside eating candy and talking to my friends at church. I noticed that this little boy was standing all alone watching all the other little kids play without him. I thought that maybe he was upset so I went over to him and asked if he wanted the rest of my gummy worms. He seemed nervous at first, but eventually he started talking to me. I learned that he was five years old and he was visiting his grandparents for the weekend. His older brother was outside playing basketball with some of the other older boys at the church, and…

Ever since I was born, I was a military brat. Not knowing where to call home, or if any place could be home, I moved. I moved six times, four of those places were towns that nobody could think about. Germany, North Carolina, Alaska, North Carolina, Germany, and Alaska, yet no place to call home. May 22, 1999, my first day on this world; Kronach hospital had its first American baby in their hands, yet they acted like I was a different species. I contemplate the meaning of life as often as most people my age smoke cigarettes. It’s a nasty habit I’ve become accustomed to but it passes the time. I’ve always believed that the real definition of dying is when you are stuck in the same place with the same person day in and day out. I never wanted anything in my life to stay the same. I fed off of the constant changes. Yet I never used to look at her in this way. The one part of my life that for years I have refused to change is my beliefs. Everything else was temporary once something or someone in my life left they were forgotten. I would no longer long for the comfort or warmth they had brought me. Everything in life is temporary people, items; even this world will one day come to an…
