Personal Narrative: Iranian Refugees

I have a debt to this country that I will never repay. Both of my parents are Iranian refugees. They lived under a repressive, autocratic government that denied its people basic rights. My parents, along with thousands of other Christians, were persecuted because of their faith. They were forced to believe that their lives were worthless, and that there was no way they would ever be successful. They came to America because it was the only place people like them had a chance. Here in this country, they never made it big. However, the very purpose of their lives was to give my brother and I the chance to do things that they never could. There was something very important that my parents made sure I understood. It was that, where they grew up,
there was only so much they could accomplish. Because of where they were born and whom they were born to, their opportunities were limited. They wanted me to know that I would not have those limits, and that there were no dreams, no ambitions, and no aspirations unavailable to me. Something so simple as going to college is extremely important to my family. Not only because I am fortunate enough to have the access to it, but also because we value education so highly.
