Summary: Chris Gardner (born February 9, 1954) is an American entrepreneur, investor, stockbroker, author during the 1980s, and now motivational speaker who struggled with homelessness while raising his toddler son. You may not have perceived that this life, the way we have been brought up has condition us to be unseeing to some obvious situations in this world. Visibly picture in your head what it means to be homeless at that same time think why are those people homeless? During this recent article, Michael Sullivan wrote, I was homeless; ‘the look’ judged me worthless, to share with all readers in different communities. Sullivan has an overwhelming sense of personal experiences shared which gives a great insight to draw his readers to an emotional side as well as a connection of trust with him. While using examples of pathos and ethos his readers are likely to feel a connection to his article and see things differently as he did during his own life experience.…
It was the first day that school was out. And, the old movie theater had just shut down last year. We wanted to go check it out. There was only four of us John, Luke, Ian and I. We had no more than one day.…
A problem that persists through every part of the world is a lack of compassion for the homeless. No matter how many charities are available for people to donate to, they are often careless and forgetful. This problem stems from laziness and a lack of motivation to be involved. This carelessness can account for the lack of resources or the lack of knowledge about resources for the homeless.…
I decided this summer, to use the free time for painting a comic. The protagonist of this comic, I determined, was a homeless person of color living in NYC. Notwithstanding I have been always especially active in my community, and have volunteered in several programs that benefit homeless people of color and LGBTQ, the research I made about homeless people in NY was an eye opener.…
I am one of the 220,000 that are homeless each and every night in Australia. Us as homeless people, we don’t really get seen as ‘’positive’’ people, we’re mostly seen as negative. A way we can be seen as positive, is if we as homeless people that have turned our life around successfully or if we are recorded giving to anther homeless who needs it more and is uploaded to Facebook or any social media. Which isn’t regular as we don’t often get fed most nights.…
On a cold, brisk snowy night in New York City little did I know I was about to make an encounter with someone I'd never forget. I was waiting for a friend in McDonald's so she could get her food and stay inside for warmth, when I realized someone not too far behind me was talking. Startled, I turned around I saw a homeless man wrapped in torn up blankets, shaggy, undone brown hair and trying to keep warm like the rest of us. My first instinct was to stay clear until a woman had drooped her purse and money rolled around his feet, as he bent down to retrieve the money to all our disbelief he handed her the money and told her something extraordinary. As he handed the woman back her money with shaky hands, he looked down and exclaimed how,"Money…
A couple years ago, I participated in my football team’s monthly Feed-the-Homeless trip. During the time, my coach made the trip it manually for each player to participate in the trip at least once. I decided to participate during June, knowing that I had to do at least once.…
Mrs. Davis said, “Absolutely, this morning I was getting ready for my meeting when I heard what happened to Katherine and saw you guys over. I tried to get someone else to take the meeting and couldn’t find anyone willing to do it. When I came home, I called the police department to tell them about the man in the backyard. They told me to wait until you came back and tell you about the homeless man. He is probably the murderer.” Pointing her finger toward the detective, Mrs. Davis added.”Kathy was my friend.”…
Known as the “City of Trees” for its abundance of greenery, my hometown of Sacramento, California could also be called the “City of the Homeless”. There are staggering numbers of homeless Sacramentans and a significant amount of people who lack consistent access to nightly shelter. On any given night, the homeless population of Sacramento County totals nearly 2,700 people (www.sacramentostepsforward.org), and this number is on the rise.…
As I walked around my city to feed the homeless, I chose to go to the first neighborhood I’ve lived in out of several. As I was taking in the nostalgic scenery, I motioned towards a man who took shelter behind a dumpster. Not wanting to startle him, I kindly greeted and offered him one of the many pb&j’s I had prepared earlier.…
Homelessness is a pressing issue throughout the entire world. It affects people of all ages, genders, and races. The official definition from Google of homeless is “(of a person) without a home, and therefore typically living on the streets.” People who are homeless usually do not choose their homelessness. In fact, many people are pushed into this status due to many different reasons, such as gentrification or just difficulty finding a job. Walking down the Market Street of San Francisco, a bustling city, one would find many homeless begging, walking, or chatting with other homeless. They each have their own story behind their homelessness, and their own hardships. Women, in particular, have different needs and sufferings; they are more prone…
The moment I looked out the window of the car and my eyes turned to the row of homeless people weaving its way through the traffic begging for money, I jumped out of my seat. It was my first visit to India after leaving the country for the United States. The homeless people's’ hands were making weird gestures and thumping the windows of the honking cars. I could not digest what I was seeing! While reaching out to an old woman to give her some money, I thought about what non homeless people could do to help those without a home and basic needs. Then, I asked myself a question. Why not give them something that will be with them forever and help them out of their poverty and teach them valuable skills? After all, a mountain of…
Although some homeless people have drug or mental illnesses, some have had just plain bad luck or poor judgment. In the film, The Pursuit of Happyness, Chris Gardner struggles severely. He can hardly sell his machine for business, his wife leaves him, and he has to find places to stay at night. Despite these struggles, he is determined to succeed and has a positive attitude. This helps Gardner at getting a prestigious job and Dean Witter and finding true happiness. In Weltner’s essay, a girl named Adrienne used some poor judgment and ended up having no backup support system. There are many ways to become homeless other than drug addiction and mental illnesses. For this reason, we need to continue programs to help our homeless. I know someone in the same shoes as Adrienne and Gardner.…
Honestly, being poor is terrible. I am stick thin and always hungry. Everyday I’m scared that somebody in my family might die from starvation. I always get sad when I see other kids with phones and new clothes while I’m here wearing the same shirt I’ve worn for a week. I wish that I could walk around the streets without being insecure about my dirty clothes. I’m sometimes lonely because I don’t have many friends since I don’t really go to school. Also, I hate feeling needy whenever I ask strangers for extra money. But, what keeps me going everyday is the hope that things might get better, that maybe I won’t be homeless forever. Even though sometimes I am afraid and feel lost, I know my life will get easier eventually.…
