Walking out of the nail salon with her nails still wet, Betty wanted to be careful until they dried. Today she had gone to a new salon in the shopping center near Putney Mountain. “They did a good job,” she said, looking at her nails as went to the car.
Getting into her car she noticed, the gas was low. I had better get some gas before my car stops, and I have to call Jim, she thought, driving down the street, until she spotted a station on the opposite corner and pulled into the first pump. Disappointment covered his face as he thought something was wrong since he had never asked about his grandpas. “After all these years, with no grandpa, why do you want one now?” Looking at his sad face, she said, “I’ll tell you again, your dad’s dad passed away when he was only three and he remembers very little about him. My father died while rescuing a family from a burning house. Being nine years old, I remember him well, he was a big man and so good-looking. He loved to play with me, we had so much fun eating my pretend cookies and drinking tea.” Sadness filled her voice as she stared off in the distance. “That’s okay. Mom, I know you miss him. Don’t talk about him anymore,” he said, and thought she was going to cry.
