My cultural background is Native American, Scottish, Irish, and Canadian; I have been taught a lot about our cultural background throughout my life. I have also been lucky in the area I grew up. I grew up in a very culturally diverse area. Many of my friends from elementary school through high school were from many different cultures. I grew up eating food at friends house that to this day I still cant pronounce.…

As someone who has lived in Cumberland House, Saskatchewan and Terrace, British Columbia, this wasn't my first Pow Wow. I will say I don't remember going to any in Cumberland House as I was only two when we lived there, but I there are quite a few funny pictures of me, a chubby blond haired blue eyed baby in my pink jacket sitting among all the brown skinned, brown eyed, and black haired Native babies. I do however remember going to Pow Wows in Terrace. These two places are very different from each other, the Costal peoples having very different traditions from the Plains peoples.…
Jim Frederick’s book “Black Hearts” explores the harrowing account of soldiers from 1st Platoon, Bravo Company, 502nd Infantry Regiment during their deployment in 2005-2006 through Iraq’s “Triangle of Death”. The story is one of failed leadership at all levels, resulting in broken bonds between brothers, drug abuse, and ultimately the rape and murder of an Iraqi family. The soldiers’ descent into complete isolation was brought on by not only dire combat situations, but also a complete disregard for their mental health by higher. This essay will compare and contrast the roles of SSG Eric Lauzier and SFC Jeff Fenlason, and how their leadership had a positive or negative effect on their subordinates.…
The year was 1991 at Fort Benning in Columbus, Georgia. Master Sergeant Hartman is 5’11 and weighs about 200 pounds. He is stocky built and tough because he loves to start bar fights. Due to his alcoholic issues he is a very angry man. The reason why he is angry is because his mom died when he was young. He feels like he has to take his frustration out on his soldiers in training. He did not go college because he stayed home helping his dad financial and medically. But that's not the reason why he joined the army. He wanted to be just like his father. One time there was a young teenage boy that joined the army and it reminded of himself. Basically the you boy came from the same type of living situation as Master Sergeant Hartman.…
After the release of Friedan’s novel, there was an overwhelming response from the readers. Many responded with utter happiness, claiming that Feminine Mystique had changed their lives, while many responded negatively. Friedan’s success led her to co-fund the National Organization for Women (NOW) in 1966, to work towards increasing women’s rights. By being a part of this organization she influenced the change “outdated laws that were disadvantageous to women, such as sex-segregated help-wanted ads and hiring practices, unequal pay, and firing a woman who was pregnant instead of providing her with maternity leave” (NWHM). However, many African Americans felt that NOW was “too white and middle class” to address the problems poor women and racial…
I have worked with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in Alice Springs, Weipa, Innisfail, Broome and Adelaide. I am a current member of the Reconciliation Advisory Committee for the Campbelltown City Council and passionately believe that reconciliation is the responsibility of every Australian. I have over sixteen-years experience working directly with culturally and linguistically diverse community members and have gained a sound understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and culture. I possess excellent management, community engagement, research and communication skills and strongly believe the experiences I have gained from previous work roles, along with my desire to advocate reconciliation, makes me perfectly suited…
The amazingly talented author was wonderfully intuitive in his inner workings of the terrific story; the way he magically made me feel as if i was somehow in the wonderful story. I understand how the people were affected when their religion was taken away; I can imagine the pain in not being able to practice my religion. That would be a huge mental thing for me as I’m sure it was for them. Religion is something that helped them through their everyday life I would hate to have that taken away from me. Religion is what keeps some people going; when you take that away from people it takes a lot of determination to strive through that. They should've had amnesty in their doings and tremendous works.…
Anthropology intellectually excites me. I say this because for years I loved studying people and how they moved and interacted. So when I discovered anthropology I was excited knowing that ,for a living, I could study people. Not only do I love anthropology but I am interested in all anthropological studies like biological anthropology, primatology, medical anthropology, and physical anthropology. For years my interest in anthropology has given me incentive to do well in school.…
We met in Kelowna - August long weekend of 2009. I wasn't supposed to be there, but that's what faith is for.…
When I moved from the eastside to the westside of Dearborn in 2006, I felt distraught. I barely knew anyone that went to Bryant Middle School. I wanted to return home and talk to my friends that went to Woodworth Middle School, in East Dearborn. To comfort me with a pet, my brothers took me along with them to the Dearborn Animal Shelter. We combed through several cages containing cats; we saw an adorable three-legged cat, a beautiful calico cat, and some cute white kittens. We then came upon a cage containing a small white and black cat named Ring Leader. Ring Leader was 5 months old at the time. He was lightly shedding, climbing over the shelter worker, and feverishly looking around. Ring Leader seemed like an energetic and fun cat, so I chose…
That’s interesting you’ve mentioned not to attend the hospital and funeral for your grandmother. In my African American/Indian culture if a woman is pregnant she’s prohibited to attend anywhere the death angel may currently be around, and funerals are definitely off limits. My family used to say when a life is taken a new life is born and I don’t know if the pregnant thing was an old superstation by forbidden spirit in my family as well because they believed the death angel comes to take a life in three; therefore it permits the baby a chance at life. Nowadays, there’s wills and other things in place to carry out a person’s wishes. I believe she told you because she knew she could trust you to carry out her last wishes amongst the family accordingly.…
First off, I was born in Gallup, New Mexico in the McKinley County Indian Hospital, in 1976, to a half Zuni/Spanish native, and a Hispanic Apache mother, and growing up I saw and suffered a lot of abuse, and a very unstable youth. My father and mother divorced when I was a baby, and my stepfather was very abusive, to me and my mother for many years, until he was arrested for killing my mother's best friend. After that, I saw the effect that abuse had on my mother, and she became a victim of drug and alcohol addiction, so eventually my little brother, sisters, and I was taking into Child Protective Custody. We were separated at first, and I had a few good foster parents, and a couple really evil ones, but eventually I was placed with a family who allowed us all to be…
I have spent days in the Hawaiian Islands educating Hawaiians about Christianity and it is no vacation. I have grown taller from when you have last seen me, but I do look very different. My hair is now a light brown from the exposure of the scorching sun, my body has become frail and scrawny from the lack of food and nutrients on my journey, and my attitude towards events has changed and I am more aware and sensitive to my peers aboard the ship. I have suffered sea sickness and have witnessed many deaths while sailing to the island, either from the lack of food or health. Here in the Hawaiian islands isn’t all that bad though. I have met many friendly Hawaiians and we are slowly starting to understand each other. However, aside from the welcoming Hawaiians, the scenery is something that is a once in a lifetime opportunity, I could have spent my whole day here with my hands and feet engulfed into the grainy sand while watching the sparkling, blue…
It is a beautiful day in Sacramento, California and I am just getting lunch at “Mrs. Castillo’s home for Orphans” while I was eating string cheese and carrots with my best friend Elijah, my other friend Allie ran into the cafeteria and said “Hey! Samara! I have something for you, from Mrs. Castillo! After she was done sprinting, she handed me a note that said “Mrs. Castillo’s office, and I looked at the bottom and I saw something circled… and it said NOW!!! In all capitals. I knew that I did something wrong, I just knew it! I was so nervous I felt like I was going to throw up. As soon as I got up to the door I knocked, and heard her say “Come in my dear.” I walked in the door, and as soon as I got in there she turned around…
