Personal Narrative: Lake Holiday
“It bit me! Get me out!” I shreeked. I’m sure you're wondering “what bit her?” Well, I was around 8, we were on a family trip and I decided it would be a good decision to go into the lake… Now, you’re probably thinking “how could it be a bad decision?” Considering I have always been afraid of fish, it wasn’t my best choice.
Every year, my family and I take a camping trip to somewhere different. Someplace new and exciting. Since I was living in Hessville at the time, Lake Holiday was a new place to us… Usually, we travel far distances to go camping but this was just a mere 45 minutes. A lot of my extended family lives in Roselawn or DeMotte so the place wasn’t unfamiliar to my family. It was a Wednesday when we started to pack up our things.

In White’s essay, Once More to the Lake, he conveys his attitudes towards the week spent at the camp by giving concrete and specific languae. The personal and autobiographical source of the essay is authenticated by these methods. These fundamental ideas emerge as White compares his memories of the lake with his experience upon revisiting it with his son. The multiple points of comparison and the language he uses to describe them is, once again, concrete and specific.…

This spring I spent two-weeks in New York visiting my daughter and her family. I spend a lot of time in the city, and I love it, not only because my daughter has chosen to create and raise a family in Brooklyn, but also because of its walkability. I’m not much of a shopper, but I do like to watch other shoppers, particularly those who dress as if they’d like to be watched.…

It was three years ago in May, and my family decided to set out on a trip to the famous Lake Powell. My Turpin side, which is who we went with, consists of a fair amount of people: Grandparents, uncles, aunts, and cousins. Lake Powell is a reservoir located on the Colorado River on the border between Utah and Arizona. It was a little over five hundred miles from Snake River to Lake Powell and it took us over nine hours to get there. The drive consisted of my cousins and I sleeping on each others shoulders, and lots of movies since my Grandpa had TV screens in his truck.…

We were ready. Paddles in hand, canoe by our side, personal floatation devices, knee pads, and cameras. The afternoon sun shined on the lake, reflecting it across the calm waters. Crowds of people were enjoying their Sunday afternoon on North Beach at Devil’s Lake State Park. Young children stumbled on the moist sand and shallow waters as they tried to catch tadpoles with their small buckets. Soothing, a gentle breeze passed by as we walked towards the edge of Devil’s Lake. Marveling at the majestic mountain of cedars around the lake and smelling the damp sand, my dad, little sister, and I were all set to take on our first wilderness inquiry; canoeing across a lake. It was safe to say that we were in for an exciting adventure…

It was the summer of 1991. I had a day off from working at a summer camp in South Lake Tahoe, CA, so I decided to hike Mt. Talac, 10 miles, often running. I chose to hike alone, without water, and I did not check the weather. It turned out to be a hot day with no breeze. I brought a juice box and told myself I wouldn't need more. When I got thirsty, I melted a handful of snow. When I returned to camp, I was clammy, shaking, ash gray, had a splitting headache, and felt nauseous. I looked and felt awful; the camp nurse said I had heat exhaustion. It took over a day to recover. Don't be lazy. Always have plenty of water. I'm lucky I survived that…

Every year, my family on my dad’s side goes rafting down the Truckee river. It has always been a tradition to go to tahoe over the summer, and go rafting one of those days. Over the years, we have had many fond memories, like water fights with water guns, and pushing people into the water. First, we go down to the place to rent the raft, they set up our family with two, and then we go down the river until there is a bend where they take you and your raft out. At the end of the place where you can raft, there is a little grill that we would go to for lunch.…

Everyone has their own community or organization for which they belong to. Within that community you tend to find who you are and what you are about. For me I found my identity in being an outdoors man. Being an outdoors man at my young age seems to be rare at this day, but that doesn’t prevent me from doing something I love and appreciate. Growing up with my family full of avid outdoors men helped influence me and only made my identity stronger.…

This past summer I traveled up north to Leelanau, Michigan, with my best friend, Mary, and her family. Mary’s family is basically a second family to me because we have known each other since Kindergarten. Her family goes up every year for a family vacation, but this was my first time going up with them because her older sister could not come this year. While we were up there, we traveled around to several tourist places. One of the places we went was Sleeping Bear Dunes. I have been to this place several times before, but it constantly takes my breath away because of its beauty. At the Sleeping Bear Dunes there is a hill that leads straight to Lake Michigan. This hill is so steep that from the top it looks more like a cliff than a hill. Mary, all five of her brothers, and I ran down the hill in less than a minute trying to race each other to the…
