I think by staying in the present you appreciate more of what that moment has to offer. You don't allow yourself to get distracted by what you think is going to happen in the future. Just think if all the times that you worried about something in the future and then getting to that moment and realizing that wasn't as bad as you thought it was going to be. All that time you wasted torturing yourself by worrying could be spent acknowledging the present. Although my parents are religions and thank god for all that they have, I think that it was them who were strong enough and willing to provide themselves with what they needed at moments notice. It's not fair to have worked that hard and not get
credit.
