Personal Narrative: Looking Back To The Weight Room
As the bell sounded, the little freshmen, surrounded by the muscle-ripped seniors, began their dreaded walk to the weight room. The workout consisted of a pushup circuit as defined by Merriam Webster and by me as an hour full of pain and suffering. During the workout the little freshmen could not even come close to keeping up with the burly seniors, but when a high school football coach is watching every elbow contraction, keeping up is required.

When this hour of agonizing pain and suffering ended, I thought, “People do this in their free time?” By nature, I have a slim physique which is synonymous for weak or as my mom likes to say, “a late bloomer.” Looking back at being one of those little freshmen, intimidated by the jacked seniors, it makes me laugh that I thought I would never step foot in a weight room again because since that time, I developed a passion for working out. I always had a passion for working hard in school, but I never thought I would have a passion for lifting weights.

This passion started a year and a half later on a Sunday afternoon. I went to the gym with my stepbrother, who looked like those seniors who

Physically I changed my genetics and mentally I strengthened my brain. Working out has taught me how to balance school and fitness. Since I started working out, my overall attitude has improved as well as my confidence. I have also seen a slight increase in my grades. By this logic, more elbow contractions equal higher grades. I guess that is something only football/PE coaches keep stored in the back of their heads. Working out has taught me that there is more than just the classroom. Success comes from being well rounded and fitness is what completes me. Even though some days I have to drag myself to the gym, fitness is still my passion and has changed me for the

Screams of excruciating pain interrupted my slumber. Springing up from my sleeping bag, I looked in the direction where I heard the continued sounds of agony, broken bones, and ripping flesh. Quickly scanning the gym with my eyes, I saw that five of Kristine’s survivors became runners. In the bleachers, three of runners dugged their teeths into the survivor’s necks, faces, shoulders, who were lying peacefully and unexpected in their sleeping bags. In the middle of the gym’s basketball court, two more runners’ yanked meat and muscles from survivor’s faces, as the survivors attempted to fight back, however their attempts were useless, the runner’s strength over powered theirs. As one runner, in the middle of the gym, swallowed a survivor’s nose,…

A cold sweat began to bead at the base of my neck as I urged the muscles in my knee to work their way through the set of squats my physical therapist had asked me to perform. My appointment was scheduled at seven in the morning, but already I could feel the adrenaline rushing up and down my spine as I watched the sun rise over the waking city through the large paneled windows of the gym. Sharp pain shot up the inside of my right knee as I slowly lowered myself, making it difficult to continue the squats. As I pushed the muscles in my knee to lower myself further, I gazed intently at the wall in front of me for inspiration. A quote I had learned to cherish over time as my personal mantra adorned the wall, reading, "What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us." With these powerful words lodged into the back of my mind, I dropped my body into an even lower squat and continued to complete the set with strong determination to get back to soccer, the sport…

Prior to my interview with Bryce Dreager, I thought that the career in personal training seemed fun and something of my interest. Also, I thought it would be a career where I would at least need my bachelors in science for exercise and wellness. I would really love a job where I could be comfortable and love what I do at the same time and personal training sounded like the perfect fit. Most importantly, I made the assumption that I would have to learn a lot about personal training on my own to be really good at it.…
