Personal Narrative: Meeting A Legend In Country Music
Meeting a Legend in Country Music

My wife is a teller at US Bank in Pleasant View, Tn. One evening during our normal conversation about the events of the day, she said, “Guess who I have as a customer at the bank.” I had no idea who it could be. She told me his name was Dan Dugmore and I immediately recognized who it was. Dan is a studio musician who has played on countless number one country albums. He plays several instruments but his primary instrument is the pedal steel guitar. He has won the Academy of Country Music Awards Pedal Steel Player of the Year award many times in his career. I was fascinated that she had the opportunity to meet him.
Several months later my wife planned a surprise for my upcoming birthday. I was turning 40 and

I met Mr. Dugmore and he took me to his studio out behind the house. When we walked in the door, the first thing that caught my eye was all the gold and platinum records that were hanging on the walls. I started walking around the room looking at each accomplishment he had attained. Major artist’s such as Tim Mcgraw, Carrie Underwood, Kenney Chesney, Rascal Flatts, and many more were among the records. In the center of the room was a computer desk with a computer, a mixing board, and monitor speakers attached. His Show Pro pedal steel was set up next to the desk. In the adjoining room, there were probably 9 or 10 different pedal steels that were set up. There were more pedal steels in one room than I have seen in my entire lifetime.
Mr. Dugmore sat down at his computer and loaded a song demo that had been sent to him for a Tim Mcgraw song. He started playing the track and I recognized the song but realized it was not Tim Mcgraw singing it. Dan explained that when the company sends out a demo, they have a stand in singer do the vocals so the track won’t be released by someone before the album comes out. He then started playing the parts he had added to the demo track. It was such a great experience to be able to see how this process worked. He added his parts to the track without having to leave his home and sent it back to the

In my youth, I hated music. I hated how other kids my age were out having fun while I stayed home on the piano bench. I hated the monotony of completing exercises every day on the piano: twelve major scales, and thirty-six minor scales, forty-eight arpeggios, and chord progressions in twelve keys for a grand total of 108 different permutations. After all, what was the point? This wasn’t going to land me a job anywhere. Little did I know that this was my future. It is October 2015 during halftime of a football game. The band director bores through the amalgamation of fellow band students then sits behind me on the edge of the wet bleachers. He speaks rapidly to me about the upcoming musical production and the necessity of a keyboard…

As a newcomer to classical concert-going, I was enthralled by the aural masterpieces and the alluring atmosphere. In partaking in the National Philharmonic's opening concert of the year at the Music Center at Strathmore, one experiences the warm ambiance of classical music in modern times while retaining its renowned value.…

Rachmaninoff stated, “Music is enough for a lifetime, but a lifetime is not enough for music.” Essential to all nationalities, generations, and people, music can make your soul soar, put you to sleep, or bring you to your knees in tears. All din and clamor goes silent. Every eye is riveted on the conductor. The baton lifts. Suddenly, in a myriad of melodies, harmonies, timbre, and texture, a whole new realm is unraveled. The extraordinary feeling of unwinding and renewing your mind by listening to the flow of music is inexpressible. Nothing compares.…

Rod has always had a niche for music and states that he grew up in “polka country.” In fact, his parents were both very musically inclined. His father knew how to play multiple instruments and was in a band throughout his earlier years of life, so Rod actually listened to live music growing up more than listening to records. He remembers going to big band dances where music from the famous American trombonist, Tommy Dorsey, filled the room. It wasn’t until his early teenage years that he began to buy records of Elvis Presley and Barbara Mandrell, his favorite recording artists. He stated, “Now Barbra Mandrell isn’t even worth 10 cents! That goes to show my fine taste in music,” in reference to his ‘not so great’ investments in the record department. Back then he could purchase a record for $1.00 and a large album for $3.00, something that has clearly changed over the past several years and was a large expenditure at the time. He remembers the excitement of going with his mother to the large department store in Green Bay and shuffling through the shelves of records until he found the song or artist he was searching for.…
