Personal Narrative: Moving From A Mentor To A Program Team Member

Moving from a mentor to a program team member is a huge step because there are more expectations that I must execute. Instead of guiding my mentees, I now have to take the next step to guide the future peer mentors. Although being a program team member involves a lot of work and planning, this will help me become a stronger and more independent person which will help me succeed in my future career. It takes a better leader to go through training of how jobs must be done, and that’s why I’m here. In terms of responsibilities, I went through the phase of being a peer mentor so the tasks are kind of similar. Even though the responsibilities are slightly different from what I have usually done, I know I can adjust to it. Seeing how much work
and effort the recent PT members have put into their activities made me realize that it’s going to take a lot of time and dedication to have a successful camp. I want to do what is best for my peer mentors because I understand what it’s like to be naive when transitioning from being a mentee to a mentor. It is definitely a big change, but I know everything will be worth it in the long run. Since I was part of the senate and a peer mentor, it won’t be much of a change in terms of expectations. My goal is for students to grow and understand the roles of what’s to be expected when becoming a leader. Besides responsibilities, there is commitment. When it comes down to being committed, it is another way of saying that I will give my 110% effort. I am committed to attend all meetings and communicating with my team for further help on what must be done. I am also committed to working with my team in planning activities for the upcoming training camp. In all, I want to be sure that we are organized as much as possible so that our team can stay on track.
