Personal Narrative: Moving States
Who could've thought moving states could cause such a change? I never knew it could… this much. As the for sale was ripped out of my yard, we returned back into my previous house. This was the day we moved to hot and big Texas. We hauled all our boxes, big and small, short and tall, into the moving truck. “Let's go,” my mom yelled. We started our journey to Texas, and I could already feel sorrow in my heart.

As we arrived to the gigantic airport in Orlando, we walked onto our flight, and I felt a feeling of sadness but also joy to move to Texas, meet new people, and do new things! When we landed in Texas, I gazed out on the unfamiliar place and pondered, “ Where are the cacti and sand dunes?’’ This was when I realized that Texas isn't what

All my life I have lived Pearl, MS. I never went out of state for vacation, even though I have always wanted to travel and explore the world. Ever since I was little, I have always wanted to go to my parent’s hometown: Santa Catharina, OA. My parents would always show me pictures and videos of their hometown that infatuated me. I would constantly ask my parents to take me, until they finally took me on thanksgiving break. When I arrived to Santa Catharina, I did not expect to see the immense amount of difference that I perceived. The city of Pearl has different geography, cars, and opportunities from Santa…

Whenever there is the mention of the great State of Texas, one tends to automatically visualize a sweltering hot, baron wasteland, saturated with 6-foot rattlesnakes, enormous oil wells, and handsome cowboys galloping on horses, with a six shooter attached to their hip. Few people are aware that deep in the heart of Texas, there is a paradise known as the Hill Country,…

Change. From the first breath inhaled to the last, we change hundreds, thousands, of millions of times throughout the entirety. These changes may not always be so obvious, whereas others are blaringly distinct. Change is inevitable, especially as the environment, technology, economy, and people develop. Us, human beings, we are flexible, able to adapt and survive. However, as we adapt to these changes, we can not let these changes compromise our beliefs and principles by which we abide and hold close to our hearts.…

North Dakota is not one of those glamorous states that everyone wants to go to. It is not even one of the top forty-nine states on most people’s list. It was at the top of the list for my family, though. Out of all the states that we have been to as a family, somehow we skipped over North Dakota, so we made it our mission last summer to hit this elusive state that we missed. Our vacation was very special to me, not only because North Dakota was the last state that we had not been to, but also because the road trip there was full of thrilling stops and adventures, and the long trip in our tiny twenty-four foot camper helped my family come closer to one another (both figuratively and literally).…

    1. How did the first Texans arrive here? How do we know anything of what their lives and cultures were like? What do we learn from the pictographs in the Pecos River area? I was in at Save-A-Lot a couple of weeks ago and while I was in line to check out, I overheard a lady talk about a man that was following her on the walking path behind my house. She was talking about how this man would follow her for a couple hundred feet then stop, completely strip down, and would start performing sexual acts on himself. She said that she doesn’t feel comfortable walking on the walking path anymore. We need to take action to stop these things from happening and make the walking path safer.…

Football has always been a big part of my life. As a young boy I would day dream of making insane touchdowns, making tackles that would leave man stuck in the ground, and even winning the heisman trophy. In 7th grade I had begged my mother endlessly to sign me up for pee wee football because she would always worry about the risks of football. After finally getting her to sign me up, we went straight into the season. I chose to play running back because as a 12-year-old I was remarkably fast having timed 5.3 in the 40 yard-dash. After a few weeks in the season we approached the playoffs and found out our opponent for the first round of the playoffs were the jaguars who were undefeated. Our team didn’t have the best chemistry on…

Traveling into the Indian Territory, we were being angrily chased down by three Indians furiously shouting at us. Dashing through the thick forest, the savage Indians were throwing spears and shooting arrows that narrowly missed us. Although neither Gideon nor I was mortally injured, I did suffer from a nick from an arrow piercing near my ear. Thankfully, a group of burly fur traders approached from the side, which frightened the Indians to run away. Acknowledging that Gideon and I were inexperienced travelers in the west, they offered us protection in exchange for some valuable possessions. As a consequence, knowing that they were our best alternative for survival, we gave them our antique gold pocket watches and assumed the identities of novice fur traders. From that point on, we followed them through the west and adopted their skills for efficiently hunting animals and keeping warm in the harsh, cold weather. During one of our rest points, we approached a large Cherokee settlement located in Park Hill in which our group leader was friends with the Cherokee leader John Ross.…

I am standing on a ledge, nearly tripping off, surrounded by the depths of the ocean. According to me the world cannot end, but reality is never what you think. The entire world is currently under the grasp of Mistress Ice, inside her Nation or so-called kingdom. My job is simple, go kill her and save the Earth. Sounds pretty heroic right, yep, it’s easier said than done! I have been asking myself that ‘why me?’ I hate Ice! She has practically sunk the entire world, but she has left small ledge for me to give myself a pre-battle pep talk. First ice ledges surrounded by piranhas, serious loyal creatures you know. Most students applying to college are at the age where they question their existence and identity. Commonly they ask themselves who am I? why am I here? what's my goal in life? They begin to form their identity which is the mold for the rest of their lives. Erik Erikson a famous developmental psychologist, explains this in his psychosocial stages “Identity versus Role Confusion”. The process of developing an identity for yourself and finding a purpose in life is scary but exhilarating.…

    The Summer Escape

My family has always looked forward to leaving Florida during the torrid summer months. It is a tremendous relief to get out of the heated hustle and bustle of summer living in Florida. Each summer, we follow the yellow brick road to our hometown in upstate New York. As we drive through state after state, it becomes apparent that the world around us is changing. In South Carolina, we already begin to notice changes. The trees appear to be touchable, offering soft, plush leaves which sway in the breeze, and the grass actually invites us to share its place rather than scaring us away with mounds of intruding fire ants. As each state brings new surroundings, our anticipation builds, and home seems closer all the time. Leaving the flatlands and entering an area where we are suddenly surrounded by hills of purple and blue are by far the most awakening moments. Virginia and Pennsylvania offer brilliant scenery with majestic hills and checkerboard farmlands. As we descend through the curves and winds of the northern region of the United States, home is now very close: we are almost there. Suddenly, we have driven from wide-open flatlands to a narrow, winding road surrounded by hillsides of stone and trees. Around every curve, orange and black tiger lilies claim their place in the world as they push themselves out toward the car, waving hello and flashing their mysterious black spots toward us as we drive by. The journey home is almost complete. As we begin our final descent through the state of Pennsylvania into upstate New York, the surroundings become comfortably familiar. Before long, we are welcomed by a sign that reads “Waverly, 18 miles” and the familiar fields of grazing cattle. Through the last stretch of Pennsylvania, the bursting foliage seems to envelop us and carry us over the hills like a carriage created by nature. It is at this point that our family, even the youngest member, knows that our vacation in New York is about to begin. Our eldest…

Most teenagers do not have a clue about what they want to be when they grow up. Most young adults also do not know where their path is in life. Even some full-blown adults are still trying to figure out their purpose. I was lucky. I knew exactly where I belonged from about the time I was seven up until now, at the decently young age of nineteen. I do not see my path changing anytime soon; in fact, I know it will never change. But, I did not just wake up one day as a child and know what my path was, while that would be impressive. Defining moments in one’s life defines who they are. There were lots of things I experienced in my life that made me realize my purpose, my absolute passion. I had four of these defining moments in my short span of…
