he had a shocked expression on his face. “PONYBOY!” exclaimed Mr. Syme. “Yes, Mr. Syme?” I said nervously. “This is amazing! With this essay, I’m pretty sure you will pass my class. However, I’ll confirm it tomorrow because I still need to read it. You may leave now.” I walked out of his classroom with a smile on my face.
Cherry and Marcia walked up to me and Cherry asked, “What’s new Ponyboy?”
“Nothing, except that I just passed my english class!” I shouted, which resulted in a few turn of heads.
“Nice job Ponyboy. Well, I gotta get to class now, see ya!” Cherry and Marcia scurried away and I also prepared to go to my next class.
It was a couple days later and I walked into English class.
We had substitute teacher since that day I turned my essay. However, today Mr. Syme had came back. He was acting more cheery today and he had also told me to stay after class for a bit.
“Ponyboy, I need you to sit down because I have some really big news for you.” I sat down on a nearby chair nervously, thinking that I was in trouble. “I just published your essay and millions of people are buying it all around the world. I titled it The Outsiders. Oh yeah, you might want to look in your mailbox because money might be coming in.”
“Mr. Syme! You didn’t have to do that you know!” I replied still in shock.
“I know but I thought that your family might have needed a little extra something so I published your essay.” After our conversation, I walked out of his classroom with a huge grin on my face and I hurried to my next class, hoping to get the school day over with so he can get back
home.
I finished all my classes and I rushed home. As soon as I got home, I checked the mailbox to see if there were anything in there. There wasn’t. I hurried inside and I asked Darry if there were any mail that came today that was directed towards me. He had said yes and that he put it on his desk. I rushed into my room and opened the letter as quickly as possible. Inside, there were about $100. I took the money out and I showed Darry and Sodapop. They asked where I got it from and I told them that Mr. Syme had turned his essay into a book. Darry and Sodapop both hugged me and I finally felt like family for once. With the money that I’d received, I used it to help buy a better house in which the gang could come over and just chill out.
As the years went by, many things changed, I got into college, Darry got a better job, Sodapop finally found a new girlfriend, and much more. However, the most important thing that happened was that I finally communicated my message out there. It was that one should not take things for granted because everyone needs to to continue to look at the world as if it is brand new in order to appreciate it.
