The Photo
It sits on the whitish nightstand, a gentle reminder on a hectic day of bustling and forced dialogue to relax and reminisce. Wrapped in its faded wooden cerulean frame, the snapshot transports me to another place. While the actual photograph is slightly sun-bleached, the memory stands clear and vibrant in my mind. My Abuelitos and I are sitting in a row on the shore. Our chairs are bright cherry red. I’m wearing my favorite aquamarine Little Mermaid two-piece, the one with the sparkly flounder on the side. My strong, hardworking Abuelo sports his usual slicked back hairstyle and striped collared shirt that always seemed to complement his olive toned skin. My Abuelita garbs a crisp linen shirt

But instantly I remember again, and with every stride comes an inch more of pain, making me yearn for the cool water to heal my burnt steaks. Seagulls scout for food, hurtling towards the magma if only for a taste of someone’s forgotten potato chip. My primas have already beaten me to the sea. They heave their bluegreen buckets with mustard yellow handles into the water, plunging salty mixture onto the land to fill the handcrafted moat that will protect their beloved sand princess from malicious criminals. Of course no castle is fit for a princess without twisty shells in an array of a tints and hues. I snag a glimpse of the other seemingly perfect castles around us, built with care in creating the ideal landscape, truly an architect’s paradise, but none compare. We romp in the sand for what seems like only a few minutes before my Abuela calls my name. She hands me a meal suitable for the engineer that I converted to that day. Spicy peppers and tomatoes scatter around my mouth before the cooling lime sensation mixes with the cilantro and carne asada paired perfectly with a tortilla de maiz. I gulp it down before she can say, “Despacito mijita.” And like all devoted grandmothers, passes me a glistening grape Fanta before I voiced I was

Thinking of creative ways on how to develop my paper is a strong suit I benefit while taking on a writing assignment. When given a topic to write about, I write down what comes into my head. I do not worry about the word count if the sentences make sense on paper or even punctuation. I write to avoid forget any important points I might have thought of. This method of writing is where my weaknesses show. Sometimes what I wrote makes sense in my head, but not on paper. Other challenges I face with writing assignments are time management and punctuation.…

Finally, when I moved to New Orleans I started volunteer work at the Children’s Hospital and helped with pop up clinics for the Latino community twice. Overall I found that helping others shouldn't be something seen as duty or mandatory, it should be spontaneous. Through others experiences and hardships we learn and grow as human beings, not only did I enjoy helping others but I felt that it helped me with my problems. Having moved around so much and meet so many people and living by myself so many years I came to truly be thankful for my blessings and specially for my hardships. Hermann Hesse once said, "I have always believed, and I still believe, that whatever good or bad fortune may come our way we can always give it meaning and transform it into something of value." Helping others made me realize that we all need help and that my way to help others would be through their health. It also taught me not to judge anybody, especially if you don't know what they have been through. I am hard believer that everything happens for a reason, and all the weekends I spend watching my parents help others helping others myself made me the determined person that I am today. Finally, the most important lesson I learned was to never give up, no matter how hard the task is or how bad the problem is there will always be someone willing to help and you can always be both sides to that, the helper or the one who needs…

I am of Chinese descent and one of the biggest parts of being Chinese is food. Food in China is diverse and unique from region to region. As a result, one’s cooking will often reflect one’s identity. As I learn to cook, I have to choose. Will I favor the Szechuan style, hot, spicy, yet heart-warming? Perhaps I’ll favor the sweet Shanghai style, more delicate, yet more refined. Or, I may go with my parent’s Shandong Style, rich, powerful, and familiar to me. As I learn to cook, I will refine my identity through the dishes I…

I began writing stories when I was young. By the time fourth grade rolled around I had tried writing books but never finished them. Every writing project I started I put in a memory box and stored away. My teacher read interesting books to my class. She would take two weeks to read a 500 page book. I enjoyed cuddling up next to watch each expression she expressed. Every couple of months my teacher set up blanket forts and let us read independently all day long. We’d read beside the light of a lamp and bring our own pillows to lay on. This was my favorite time of the year. From there, she let us write stories and read them aloud. My teacher helped develop my love for writing.…

Have you ever been through an experience where you moved to an unfamiliar location by yourself? Crushing violently against the slick and glimmering rocks that intermittently align the picturesque shore, the wonderfully blue velvet waves can be raucously heard from thousands of yards away. Jagged-edged and slippery, the mountains of bordering boulders act like the Great Wall of China, providing a barrier against the thrashing surf. The transparent sea seems to threaten passersby who dare to boldly venture closer, as the unfolding currents roll forward with intimidation. Reckless and consistent, the colossal whitecaps dance uncontrollably, as if they are harmoniously following to the thrashing beat of a tribal drum of a local oceanfront Hawaiian shack positioned nearby. Miles down and surrounding neighboring islands, the aggressive tide converts gradually into a calm and tranquil flow that peacefully spills onto the sand covered coastline. At these points, the flawless cerulean ocean quietly provides scarce tourists and daily natives with the pleasant opportunity to virtually complete solitude. Serene and relaxed, the flawless water eagerly invites citizens to explore its diverse marine life which it proudly maintains. The beach’s gritty sand is as warm as a fresh batch of Grandma’s homemade baked chocolate chip cookies straight out of the oven. Delicately running my bored hands through the grainy particles, I can feel the brittle fragments trapping themselves in my neatly groomed nails, inevitably getting stuck for the next couple days. Perfectly warm, the blinding sun gracefully embraces the minor island with its elegantly resounding rays while the various screechy seagulls impatiently soar past with a ravenous look in their beady eyes. Periodically a dainty and feathery cirrus cloud will appear in the otherwise spotless sky, merely enhancing the scenic atmosphere with more texture. The sky blue backdrop is deep turquoise eyes that swiftly penetrate my soul as I passionately stare into the sensual gaze of my beloved. With the bitter taste of salt…

As I was writing my personal narrative for my composition 1 class, it easily made my mind boggle. After I had got started on my personal narrative, it was easy for me to keep writing and keep following along the story line. The main strength of mine that the essay played to was my creativity and my flexibility for different writings, because I have never written an essay as serious and sad as this one, but I did have to add my happy ending when I finished the story. I wanted it to be very attention grabbing with a twist, but I also wanted it to be very emotional.…

Yet another Thanksgiving, and I was stuck in my uncle’s basement watching the Redskins face off the Dallas Cowboys. Michael Jordan, Serena Williams, and various other famous athletes all grinned at me from their respective Wheaties boxes, seemingly mocking my pain. My uncle collected them and, for some reason, had decided the bright orange boxes would be a great decorative addition to the basement wall behind the television. I remember once, when I was younger, I was searching for a movie to watch and I accidentally brushed against a limited edition Michael Jordan box. The box began to teeter, and I immediately knew that I was doomed. All the boxes began to fall like dominos to the floor. My uncle, needless to say, was furious. Thus, it was seemingly fitting that the offended boxes, now realigned on the wall, would have the privilege to witness my torture by football.…

When we finished signing in, the maid took us to our room. It wasn’t like an inside hotel, it is outside but of course we had roofs over our head. Our suite was very neat and clean. The suite had a full kitchen with a loaded fridge including pop, water, juice, champagne, wine, and beer. It had a coffee machine, glasses, a dishwasher, an oven, and a full sink. It also had a full bathroom including a vanity. The suite included a washer and a dryer. It had a balcony with a table and two lounge chairs. The living room had a flat screen T.V. with an Xbox 360 with two controllers. We had a wonderful view of the ocean where you could see people sailing and parasailing. The first thing we did was walk on the beach and ate at 1 of the 21 restaurants. There food was so good. Especially the seafood. The second day we looked around and saw 30 shops and 21 restaurants. After lunch we went to the beach. The ocean was beautiful. The color of the ocean was a light blue. It looked like a big swimming pool and not an ocean. Even when you are looking down with your head above water you can see everything. We collected a lot of pretty shells. We decided to spend the full day at the beach and it was so much fun. When you…

My insider/outsider partner was Alicia Garcia. As you can tell by her last name she is Hispanic. I don’t have many Hispanic friends and I am not use to their culture. Starting on the project Alicia told me a little a bit about her heritage. One of the things I asked her was, “Do you celebrate the day of the dead?” I know that might seem like a crazy question to ask, but I the only thing that I truly knew about her culture is what I seen on TV. Alicia said that they do celebrate it to some extent. They don’t actually go to a grave site and light candles for their fallen relatives, but instead have a feast in honor of them. Alicia is the first generation American Hispanic.…

It was a lovely walk, with the sun rising in a pool of crimson and gold, spilling light all over the land. The scenery of the park was extremely mesmerizing and breathtaking. The water in the park glistened invitingly and the birds were chirping to my favorite song. As a way to release stress, it was a must for me to jog in the morning every weekend around the park, which was stone’s throw away from my house. The park held many memory as it was where me and my parents used to have picnic together when I was little. My stomach growled when the aromatic smell of fresh baked buns that sat comfortably in a basket belonging to a family, which was having a quality time together, reached my nose. My heart sank with nostalgia as I recalled the joys of my childhood.…
