Personal Narrative: My Basketball Experience
Between 4th and 5th grade I joined a basketball team. I was in tryouts but I didn’t think I did so well. I ended up making the team though. Practices after practices, my first game took place.
My friend John played basketball too; but we weren’t on the same team. It turns out we play each other for the first game. John said “do you want to ride to the courts with me?” I said “yea, what time do you want to meet me?” John asked “what time do you have to show up to the courts?” I replied “my coach said to meet at the court in the back right at 5:30.” He also said “to bring a few drinks.”
I packed two waters for me and two waters for my friend John. I offered him some waters but he packed a Gatorade, I brought them just in case he runs

Then I tripped out of bounds. After that I threw a pass to the other team. After a while of doing really bad I thought no one would like me because I was bad. Eventually I didn’t think it could be any worse but then I got packed and turned the ball over right at the end of the 2nd quarter. Finally it was halftime, a time I could cool down and redeem myself. After 15 minutes of talking, the 3rd quarter started and I made five three pointers in a row. Then I crossed a kid up and then shot a layup. All of a sudden I was actually doing well after halftime. After the game ended a boy on my team came up to me and asked if I wanted to hangout sometime. I replied “ sure, how about this weekend.” The boy’s name was Steve. I started bad and I thought about quitting. It turns out I am pretty good and made a new friend. The final score was 43-39. We had won by four points. The drive home was awkward because the team we played were supposed to be the best in the league, and we beat them on our first game. We finished the season 8-2. John and his team finished 9-1. We played in the playoffs, but got knocked out in the semi-finals. The final score was
52- 57 we lost. The next two seasons we won the championship and went undefeated. John team made it to the championship but lost to a three- pointer.
The final score was 50-47. I am glad I didn’t quit because I made a few friends and finished the season off doing good. I

Everybody was at my skill level and I didn’t have much I could do about it. Eventually in the fifth game of the season, I got fouled and ended up with a broken leg for six months.…

We waited in the gym for about 4 hours, then I got hungry. I walked through the dark hallway to use the vending machine. After I got my honey bun, I walked around to the field house to see if they posted the team. They did, 14 id numbers on one sheet of paper. I looked up and down the list multiple times looking for my id number and unfortunately it wasn’t on there. My heart was broken and I was so confused. I walked home teary-eyed and when I arrived home I cried my eyes out. After that I didn’t play basketball for a whole week, which I had never done. After that week I got back in the gym, and kept playing every day as usual. I went to all of their games because I loved the sport and I wanted to support my friends. After the season ended everything went back to normal, we kept going to the YMCA every day. Now school has ended and summer league starts. Coach put me on Jr. Varsity just too test my skills and the first game, it was the best game of my life. I dunked the ball on a fast break and I couldn’t miss. I was the star player and that showed coach I was better so he put me on varsity. All in all I am just saying never give up and work as hard as you can, it will pay…

Our 12-man team (one of whom was a girl) won twice out of the whole 43 game season. Twice. They were the last 2 games as well. So imagine telling your friends 0-39-2. In addition, there was this especially excruciating streak of 10 or 15 games where we lost by 1 or 2 goals. You know the State Farm commercial…where the insurance agent has a dollar at the end of the fishing hook, saying “Oh, you almost got it.” I can identify with that poor lady.…

It all came down to this. The seniors had been honored, tears were shed, and the fans were ecstatic! Our district rival, St. John of Plaquemine had the ball with just over two seconds on the clock. Our small forward, Dustin Blanchard, who also happened to be one of the two seniors honored that night, just drained what everyone had thought to be the game-winning lay-up. The noise was deafening as St. John’s Hayden Heminway stood to throw in what had to be a full court pass, a prayer to win the game. The referee blew his whistle and began to count to five. Hayden cocked back and heaved the ball three quarters of the court! We had set up in the perfect defense, and were in position to intercept the ball. Time began to slow as the ball skimmed my teammates fingers, and landed perfectly in Tyler St. Germain’s--whom we mockingly referred to as “Goggles”--hand. Time was ticking, and he shot the ball towards the goal. Time slowed down as the ball hit the hoop, and teetered on the back of the rim for what seemed like a lifetime. The ball fell through the net. Game over. St. John defeated Ascension Christian on their senior night, with a buzzer beating lay-up. The…
