I was assigned to a security team. I had gone through rigorous training prior to this deployment. I’ll admit I was scared and nervous. But I was determined to get through it, regardless of the obstacles that I had to face. The first obstacle that tested my determination was during my first mission. My team and I were escorting a convoy to a FOB (Forward Operating Base) about 100 miles away. As soon as we drove out the gate a sense of uneasiness washed across my body. But I pushed it aside and continued to drive fallowing the ruck in front of me. There were nine vehicles in the convoy and I was the middle vehicle my truck held the convoy commander and medivac team. I never thought we would have to be used so soon till 80 miles into the convoy the front vehicle hit a pressure plate Improvised Explosive Device (IED) we later found out was placed under the pavement in the middle of the road. I immediately froze I was so scared, I was shacking I felt all the blood rush to my face, my mind went blank. Then my commander started to yell at me to drive forward. I knew right there I had to snap out of it and drive up to the dismantled vehicle and get to my fellow teammates aid. They were on bad shape when we got there we had to immediately medivac 3 of them out of the area. We eventually made it out of the kill zone and pushed on towards the FOB. That night when we were finally able to bed down. I thought to myself that I need to have a stronger
