It was the biggest day of the school year. It was near the end of my Freshman year in high school, and I was satisfied with my grades, proud of my diligent work throughout the school year, and adjusted to the high school. Students of all grades at that point were counting down the days until Spirit Night. Spirit Night—a big tradition in Hillsborough High School—excited me. In the event, each grade faces off with one another in multiple competitions in order to acquire spirit points. By the end of the night, the grade with the most spirit points wins. There were activities during the school day, and we would all be packed into the gym and participate in even more activities after school. During the amazing school day, all the students were jubilant…

I started dancing during my fifth grade year of school. Immediately I became infatuated with the art. Working very hard my sixth grade year enabled me to join my academy’s dance company. One day during my musical theatre class while doing a combo something wasn’t right. My right leg had a twinging pain and when I did the big kick at the end of the combo, I knew I had pushed myself too far. It’s a common misconception that ballet is nothing but delicate motions and pink tulle. I’m not a ballerina, but I know the truth. This stereotype doesn’t encompass the world of ballet as a whole. Sure, the picture painted by wispy dancers on stage is effortlessly ethereal—but the public doesn’t consider what happens in between performances. Merciless rehearsals and meticulous living fill the gaps. Tutus are traded for neutral-colored leotards that subject a dancer’s body to criticism. Hours are spent straightening leg extensions and pouring into chorography until the they’re too physically and emotionally exhausted to continue. It’s like a whole new world where the inhabitants are living under a microscope. It is also a world that I haven’t…

As a nearly 18 year old student, the best part of my days are when I have nothing scheduled. No work, no homework, no commitments. For that reason, I believe in a day off. Three years ago I walked through the doors of Mead High School like most incoming freshman, nervous, excited, and way too full of confidence. Everything had seemed to fall into place while I was in middle school. I became pretty used to the routine of school, friends, and football. Time had never really been an issue for me. After homework and sports, a night with friends or in front of the TV was a usual. I truly didn't expect a whole lot to change the day I walked through those doors, but boy was I wrong.…

A danceteam is a group of girls who dance to support their school.I can tell you it’s a lot more than that. It all started the day of tryouts, when i got the butterflies in my stomach. i was so nervous. After school that day I walked over to the middle school where Demi, and eighth grader, was waiting on all the 5th graders trying out including me. We walked into the big and gorgeous middle school. Mrs bruno the dance team team sponsor walked in to tell us what was going to be happening before she let us go get dressed. I wasn't all that terrified of her because she had been my dance teacher at my dance studio for three years. When we went into the gym we meet Mrs Lacie and she told us that she would be teaching us a dance that we would have to perform to a few judges the very next day, then we got straight to work. We started with some technique, then later moved on to learning the dance. Tryouts were from 3:30 to 5:30 and it was only 4:30 so we still had a whole hour to learn the beginning of the dance. The dance wasn't all that hard, but here and there i had made a few mistakes. After we had…
