I noticed similarities between his response and the advice from Mr. Yokley and Mr. Hough. All three, in different ways, said to see every day as a learning opportunity and to always be open to different opportunities. I am a planner type of person so it can be hard for me to accept things that aren’t apart of that plan but I think its important that I be flexible and open minded. It was a Tuesday in February when it first happened. Unexpectantly waking up in the morning, realizing that the bottle of pills taken the previous night did not do what the Internet said they would. When you are someone like me, actions and thoughts like this occur on a daily basis. Nobody wants to live this way, constantly dreading each day and hoping the next will bring a stable supply of neurotransmitters like serotonin or dopamine. These chemicals in the brain, when in excess or in insufficient amount, cause depression. As a person with dysthymia (Eeyore Depression), everyday life is a challenge; simple tasks become strenuous, thoughts become askew from random triggers, and being understood by others is a rarity.…

It was the beginning of my freshman year of highschool when my mom began to see bugs in my food, my mattress, and any place imaginable, or rather the beginning of my mom’s hallucinations. That year I found out my mom was addicted to crystal meth. I could not believe it. We went from watching A&E’s Intervention together, a show about drug addicts, to my mom becoming a drug addict. That is when my world came crashing down. It was the start of one of the most important times of my life and knowing that my mom would not be there to mentally, emotionally, and often physically, support me was tough. It was extremely hard not being able to eat because my mom swore there were bugs in my food to my mattress being thrown out because “it was infested with bedbugs.” It was tough having to call other people to give me a ride to school because my mom was not capable of doing so. Not being able to go to sleep because I was worried my mom would leave in the middle of the night because she was jacked up on meth. But this was just a regular day…

This week reminded me how amazing and important my job is. Friday was a busy day at the office; I was rushing to finish my work so I could leave on time. As I was about to leave I received a phone call from a hiring manager (Mark) with NOAA. Mark had questions about the interview process and was calling to speak to one of my colleagues. Unfortunately, my colleague was on vacation and wouldn’t be back for another week. I looked at the clock and realized it was time to go but I could hear the frustration in Mark’s voice. Instead of leaving, I spent almost an hour listening to Mark’s concerns, answering his questions, and I explained how the federal hiring process works. At the end of our conversation, Mark thanked me for my time and he told me…
