Personal Narrative: My Experience With Law Enforcement
I personally have had a few encounters with law enforcement over the years. The two to three times that I have personally been stopped by the police were directly related to procedural motor vehicle stops for speeding. The two of the three stops resulted in just simple warning and I was allowed to leave the encounter after a quick background check. The police officers were extremely respectful and easy-going. I personally was taught to respect each and every police officer and to never make their job harder than it has to be. In essence, I complied with the officers demands and in the end, the situation was resolved efficiently and calmly. The third time I was encountered by the police for a motor vehicle stop was in Virginia. In this scenario,

I have over seven years of law enforcement experience and I converse with regular everyday citizens, and they fear to get traffic violations because it may increase their insurance premium, or they may have to miss work to go court sometimes. Nevertheless, a police officer will not encounter a hardcore criminal every other traffic stop. However, Bryan was stopped by officer McPherson of the Coronado police department for not wearing a seatbelt, and Bryan was issued a traffic citation earlier that…

On Monday, April 11, I went on a Ride-A-Long with Officer Jim Brooks who is a sergeant at the Taneytown police department. Initially, I was supposed to do the ride-a-long on Friday, April 8, However, Officer Brooks contacted me a few days before, explain to me that they had changed his shift and asked to reschedule the ride- along (which we did, till Monday April 11). This shows how flexible the police staff is, with changes occurring constantly and how they do not have consistent schedules. There are 5 shifts at the station, which each officer works. Taneytown, Maryland is about 2.5 square miles. The police station was built in November of 2002 and is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days of the year. For each community within and…

I stop. He goes through; I pull up and come to a complete stop again. I put on my blinker, allow pedestrians to cross, and also notice the officer ahead slowing down. I make my right hand turn and pull into the police station parking lot, thinking back to the advice of the Mayor to stay off the side streets and the advice of anyone I’ve talked to, to stay away from police cars. At this point I am unaware that the PO turned around and followed me into the parking lot until he put on his lights. I was told the stop was for my tints. He then accused me of driving suspiciously because I made a turn and asked if I was trying to avoid him. I said no. He asked if I had ever been arrested before, to which I said yes. He returned to his car, another officer arrived. I’m then approached again by the initial officer, asked to step out of my car, and then asked to search. I did not consent. The other officer begins walking around my car and poking his head into my windows. Again, the PO said he would call the dogs if I didn’t let him search my car. I was detained for over an hour this time; issued 3 tickets: safety glasses, visibility/lights, and failure to give proper signal. That same day I called (twice) to submit my complaint (again) for over aggressive ticketing and searches by LBT officers, and that I felt I was being harassed by the police department. I spoke with a sergeant, who told me they would look into the matter and get back to me. No one ever called…

I second the fact that lately it has been very crazy. I agree with you about it being very easy to work with people around the world. Although I think that language could get in the way. But the actually act of doing something unlawful should be the cause of officers to pursue a civilian. Most of the time traffic stops occur is when there are numerous young individuals in a car together. It’s not that their doing wrong but the police target them and tries to find something wrong. It has been though that the personalities of some police officer are more subjective to the use of excessive force than others. Being that this is a public service job the individual’s personal feelings have to be separated from their duties to perform them without any bias involved. So judging on age, race, location or who you are should automatically make you a target for being a criminal or the next victim to endure or be killed due to police brutality. Like in the case of Trayvon Martin his physical attire, location and race have been subjects leading to his death along with other combinations of things leading to the death of a young teen. Although this act wasn’t committed by a formal police officer, this death was caused by a sick minded individual who didn’t make the police force. The same tactics that police use was the same ones George Zimmerman used. If the tactics of police are this public than not only with police brutality continues but civilians will start to use…

The volatile issues that surrounds “racial profiling” has led police agencies across the nation to start collecting information about traffic stops, especially for people of color. The controversy is supported by research that police officers may be racially biased in their decision making to stop someone. The article that was published in 2012 studies the consensus and conflict theories concerning racial disparities in the rate of police stops. The author suggested that both police deployment and race out of place arguments played a significant role in explaining the patterns of street stops, traffic stops, probable cause and consent searches.…

About the only good thing that came out of me going to jail was meeting this guy named Lev. He was a skinny guy that did not look like he committed a vicious crime. He didn’t he was in jail for looting a dead German on Voinova Street. He was really rude when I tried to make company, but I could understand why because at times like these you can’t trust anyone. I asked him if he was a Jew and he did not appreciate that, because he thought I looked like a Nazi, but after he found I wasn’t he was ok with the question. I gave him some sausage because I figured he would be hungry. We both were wondering why they didn’t shoot us because that was the punishment for both of our measly little crimes. I started to take notes in my journal on Ushakovo’s…

Police now a day are always trying to use more authority than they actually think they have because most people don’t know their rights. Cops will try to use what they can to arrest you for lying to them, and will threaten you. Being under arrest and being detained are two different things when being stopped. If you know your rights, just cooperate with the police officer, and if you’re not in any wrongdoing there should be no problems with you leaving the scene in no harm or handcuffs.…

Reading this may make some of you a little uncomfortable, nonetheless it needs to be verbalized! Usually, I don’t post personal business; however, I’ve been sitting on this for some time now. A few months back, I was in-boxed by someone who conceived the notion I was being racially insensitive and/or discriminatory due to the nature of some of my historical posts. The effortless response to this accusation was “If you know me and have known me for decades, that could be furthest from the truth”, however, I had to examine what I have been accused of. Throughout my life my friends were Black, White and Latino, teachers included. But this accusation I had to take seriously.…

The police said it was a robbery and that my father car was found stripped and left up on blocks. My father was barely hanging on for dear life when one of the attorneys from his old job came to tell me that his disability would now be cut off because there would be no way to tell if his injuries was from the job or from the robbery. Oh, but if that wasn’t adding salt to an already open wound, Mack Cannoli arrived to ask me how was I going to pay my father’s debt now that he can’t. What the man had offered as a way to help pay the debt had me taking a swing at him, but his men stopped me. Luckily, the police officer who was investigating the robbery walked in.…
