Personal Narrative: My First Cognitive Distortion
My first cognitive distortion is that I always tend to overgeneralize everything about my appearance. I personally think that I have bad skin genetically, I have really huge pores and I feel like my face is naturally oily which I hate! When I wear makeup it makes the oiliness even worst! Secondly I don't like my weight at all! None of my clothes fit me the way I want too and my arms are still fat and don't proportion with the rest of my body now that I have lost weight. I wish I wasn't as skinny as I am. Realistically speaking I plan on opening a gym membership, getting in the routing of working out on spare time so that way I feel more confident out in public wearing the clothes that I like. As for the skin care issue I have, I probably should

What do you see when you look in the mirror? Are you pleased, or do you immediately come up with an endless list of insecurities? As a child one of my favorite memories was laying around the house with my older sister on rainy days. We would leave the windows open so we could hear the rain coming down on the tin roof over our patio, while watching reruns of our favorite tv show “America's Next Top Model”. I always thought that these women were gorgeous and I would catch myself constantly comparing their looks to my own. I wanted to be just like them until I realized the unrealistic expectations that they had to live up to. A sizeable butt and breasts, but not too large; they have got to be proportional. A skinny waist, impeccable hair, blemish free face although even with clear skin you are expected to cake on makeup because no one is actually pretty without mile long eyelashes, the perfect smoky eye, and exemplary contouring. Society has idolized these things as “beautiful” and shamed the girls that do not meet these standards; however, society should be making everyone feel confident in their bodies. Girls need to know that it is okay not to have an “hourglass figure” so they don’t…

I use the advice you gave Dan almost every day. I get teased about my schedules. I just asked my daughter to tell me what we have to get accomplished by ten tonight. She gave me a list of things and I wrote them down. We worked together to plan the order of events to make sure everything gets done. Both of my girls write out list when there are multiple tasks to complete in a day. This shows that it is a learned behavior for those who do not use sequence at a use first level.…

Filled with nervous excitement, my ten-year-old-self ran to the bulletin board eager to discover whether or not he was accepted to the choir. As he read the list of who were chosen, his heart sank; he was not on the list. “Maybe I should give up singing ” he thought; “Maybe my voice is not good enough”. However, he refused to despair; he was determined to achieve his goals despite this failure.…

    1. Pain usually is an unwanted sensation that can be an unpleasant sensory or emotional experience. Once when I was a gymnastics practice, I fell off of the uneven bars and landed with all my weight on ankle. In that moment I had no reaction initially, and then suddenly I felt an overcast of severe pain. The top-down processing in this situation was that I had to think and process what just happened to my ankle, and then my pain sensory kicked in. This is a clear example of top down processing because my thoughts were initiated first and then it flowed down to my senses. This would be an example of a bottom up processing approach if I applied ice to the injured area. The cold temperature from the ice would travel from my sense to my…

It was a ferociously gloomy day in the heart of Center City. The time of the observation was from 11:43 am to 12:43pm. Sandwiched between 15th street and John F. Kennedy Boulevard is the Philadelphia's Municipal Services Building and within the plaza of the building lies Board Game Park. Even in the rain, the park was festive. Upon arriving, it began to drizzle. The drizzle was light enough for me to sit by a statue that was composed of multiple bodies piled on top of one another. The noises heard ranged from rain dropping, to horns honking to people laughing or shouting. In the surrounding area of the Board Game Park is Love Park with its remarkable LOVE sculpture and fountain, which was spewing pink water in support of Breast Cancer Awareness…

I have noticed in comparison to how others handle real world judgments on actions such as driving a car or stacking objects in a storage space, that I have trained myself to mentally document conditions so that I make better decisions as I visually perceive the situation. While driving a car on a multi lane road, I alway take aware of any side lanes. If there is a car ahead, I drop back to stay out of their blind spot. I put myself into their seat and imagine what they don't see by examining how their car is position in response to where my car is. What makes this hard is when riding in a car, knowing what I just said is not being applied by the driver of the car I am in makes me super nervous as the driver is assuming that that car is…

After my second year in high school, I made a decision that would turn out to be life changing. This decision wasn’t life changing in the way that getting married or going to college would be, but I really learned a lot about myself that summer. What I’m about to tell you is what happened when I switched from Marching Band to Football. I will explain to you why this switch was such a big deal to me and what I learned about myself from it. Switching from Marching Band to Football after my Sophomore year of high school changed the way I saw myself because I found I have a strong enough will to follow my heart despite controversy with others, I have a strong desire to be in control of my life, and I have an aggressive side that had not shown itself before.…

May 19th, 2013 I had dreamt of that day for almost four years. I know I can’t be the only person who feel this way. I remember it as if it was just yesterday. So many different emotions going through my mind all at once. Happiness, Sadness, I felt relieved because it was almost over but at the same time I felt anxious and overly excited to just leave and go far away. 389 seniors were going to walk across the stage and receive their diplomas. As I was writing my personal narrative for my composition 1 class, it easily made my mind boggle. After I had got started on my personal narrative, it was easy for me to keep writing and keep following along the story line. The main strength of mine that the essay played to was my creativity and my flexibility for different writings, because I have never written an essay as serious and sad as this one, but I did have to add my happy ending when I finished the story. I wanted it to be very attention grabbing with a twist, but I also wanted it to be very emotional.…

Starting from a place I remembered as a teen, moving from a place that was warm to a place that had all four seasons; such as winter, spring, summer and fall. The First place that I grew up was surrounded by mountains. During the winter it was full of white snow, something that I was never used to seeing coming from California where all one would see was sandy beaches and the waves clasping one another. As I remember being so new to Park City, UT all I could see was the wonderful views of trees, mountains and people skiing or snowboarding. I have to say this was a fond memory because for the firs time I was actually able to experience the feeling of what winter was…
