Personal Narrative: My First Math Autobiography
This is my first math autobiography. I have sat here reminiscing about my math experiences. For starters math has not been my favorite or strongest subject. Many years I have struggle with it. It seems like when my teachers would start to talk about math I would cringe at the thought of it. Never liked math. Always would say what does math have to do with my job or the job I’m getting? What’s the need of it? Not going to use it that much. But little did I know I will use it the rest of my life. In middle school that’s when everything started to take a turn for the worst. Started algebra and pass with a C, don’t know how I passed didn’t understand it. Most of the time guessed at the answers. Teachers back then did not ask a whole lot of question. If you got …show more content…
Philippians 4:13 says “I can do all things through Christ which strengthened me”. When applying this scripture, it unlocked my mind and I began to learn. I am striving to reach my goal in getting an A in math. I know now that it is important to ask questions when you don’t understand. One thing I have learn is to ask my teacher for help, and get a tutor when I just can’t get it. This year I am pleased with what I have accomplish. I had to take math 115 for eight weeks and thought I was going to struggle with it. My professor went above and beyond for his class. He gave us the tools to succeed and achieve to be successful. He challenged the class that if we work the plan that he gave us we would not fail.
We had homework every night and assessment we had to meet before we went to the next assignment. You worked each problem out. He gave us examples how to work the problem. The only way you could fail if you did not try. When test time came I still freaked a little but passed with flying colors. I have grown to like math. Now I know how to help a struggling student. Giving them the tools to succeed, not giving up on them, making math exciting that they will want to learn

On the other hand I was extremely determined to pass this class. I tried staying after school to ask my teacher for help and every time he would say he was busy or he would tell to ask the students in my class, so I tried asking other math teachers for help and they couldn't even understand the way my teacher was teaching. I ended up going to a math tutor, three times a week Tony from Mathnasium would help me with my homework and help me prepare for tests for many hours.…

To address this issue, I went to my math III teacher and asked him for help in not only preparing for his exam, but also on how to master the concepts. In my mind, I had to become a master of the concepts because I believed his class is an integral stepping stone to future math classes I hope to take in college. He told me review old notes from the beginning of the semester and to spend a few hours tutoring my classmates. I reviewed class notes, searched Google for supporting lessons, and even asked a sibling to study with me. But, I wanted to do more. I stayed after school with my math III teacher for guided study time. My teacher was amazed by how I stayed after school every day (even Friday’s) to review notes. He told me that he was very proud of my work ethic and commitment to excel. I was surprised that he realized my hard work and saw how determined I was.…

One thing that I think that sets me apart from other candidates applying to the University of California is that I put my heart and soul on every assignment, projects and exam. I work hard and put time on the assignment, projects and exam. I also give my full effort. Whenever I give my heart and soul on the assignment or projects, I am able to learn more than I should learn. I was able to discover new facts that I did not know. For example, in my Pre Calculus class, we did a project about global warming. I have to research about global warming and predict total population, average temperature, carbon dioxide emission in the next 50 and 100 years from now. I took my time and read articles about global warming. While looking at the statistic, I was asking myself what is cause of increasing population, temperature, and carbon dioxide emission. I realize those three factors are causing global warming. I made sure that I did the math correctly. I also made sure that I explained the definition, cause, and effect of the global warming. I gave my heart and soul by giving my best effort and making sure my data and information…

We all look back to our former selves and can’t help but chuckle. In high school, I was naive. I thought math was my strongest subject. Surely, I was ready for college and the rest of the world. My plan was to join the Corps so I could get the highest paying job. All for me. Also, I wanted to be challenged. Fortunately, I got a challenge and some.…

Math has always been difficult for me. I have struggled with how to figure out problems and how I can do my best in math class. I was really worried about my grade in math because I wanted to succeed in all my classes in order to get accepted to my first college choice. I started figuring out the math problems in my head and practicing them at home.I used my calculator and computer to help me to solve my math problems. I soon found out that Math wasn't as difficult as I thought it was because I had learned the steps to solve the equations. No matter how difficult the problems were, I always persevered through them. That is how I learned that no matter how hard something is, with practice and repetition you can achieve your best potential.…

In general, I would describe my ability in math as average. I did well in elementary, but middle school was when I started having difficulties. When I took math I, I mostly got B’s and C’s on my tests, because I had a hard time understanding the material, or asking the teacher if I needed help with a certain concept. Overall, I think my average grade for math would be a B, but I would like to improve this year and get an A for a final grade. My parents definitely contributed to my overall success. If I didn’t have their support, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I disliked learning trigonometry and graphing functions. I took math II online, so I wasn’t able to really use a worksheet and graph any problems for myself. I liked the substitution…

I never came kindly to the subject of Math. Math was always about constant rote memorization, full of extensive redundant notes that always found their way stuffed into the folds of my notebook never to be seen again. I held onto this impression the entire duration of ninth grade. However, upon a simple happenstance of acquiring the right math teacher with a different approach to math, I became increasingly aware of my previous errors in thinking. Everything was not as unyielding and tedious as I thought it was. Experiencing a teacher with a powerful new perspective altered my rigid frame of thinking, allowing me to excel in math.…

A person who made an enormous impact on my life was my eighth grade math teacher. I'd had failed my seventh grade TAKS test and had to take a second math class for the year. I was extremely furious and disappointed that I had to take yet another math. I was and still am terrible at math, which just made the situation even worse. Within the first week, I kept failing my assignments, which was making my grade plummet. I came to my regular math teacher for help for my assignments to raise my grades. However, the way the teacher was explaining the math made absolutely no sense to me in any way. Fortunately, when I came to my TAKS math teacher for tutoring, the way he explained to me actually made things much more simpler in my work. Things started…

Algebra 1, most students enroll in this class their freshman year. A few special students take this class their eighth grade year. An even smaller pool of students are given the option to take this class their seventh grade year. Fortunately, I was part of the small group of students able to take Algebra 1 my seventh grade year. Hi! How have you been? I feel like we have not talked in forever, and I wanted to catch up. I decided to tryout for lacrosse at Mercy and I made it, (Jv of course) but Alexa and Ash tried out too and made JV. Mia also tried out and she made both Jv and Varsity. I was wondering did your daughters decide to try out for lacrosse? Speaking of Mia, we have become really close friends this year which is awesome, and of course I have made a ton of new friends because I am outgoing (like I’ve always been), but I have also stayed very close friends with all of my corpus friends. One thing I thought I would never say has come true….. I miss pre alg!!!!! Algebra is honestly the hardest class ever I can’t win and I also hate my teacher but I just do not understand who is going to ever use “FOIL” and “substitution” which those aren't even hard but I still strongly dislike math, but I'm doing fine in that class.…

In elementary the simple rubric math was relatively easy for me. I thought that during my last year in elementary, math would be no problem for me. Well, that was not the case. Sixth grade came and math became my worst nightmare. Once I passed sixth grade, seventh was no better and let’s not mention eight grade. In my freshman year in high school I finally was tired of barley passing math so I made it my goal to pass algebra 1 with an A. I first began to check out math books for dummies at my local library, and was more than determined to learn this. My hard work towards the end of my freshman year paid off and I ended the year with a grade higher than a 95. My teacher was impress with my efforts that he suggested that I double up on math and graduate with 6 math credits instead of the required four or five if…

My name is Casey Nicole Layton, and I am nineteen years of age. I was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on January 20th, 1995. My parents used to call me an ice princess when I was little, and they always told me the same story when I’d ask how I had acquired that name. When they tried to bring me home from the hospital, we got stuck in the family car during a huge blizzard and the winter chill got to me, and they used this fairytale-like story to explain my nickname, as well as why my hands and feet were always cold. I am the third born out of six children. When I am not attending IUP, I live with my mum in Cheswick, Pennsylvania, with my step-dad and half siblings. At home we currently have 6 lizards, 5 cats, 3 dogs, and a bunny. In my spare time I breed snakes for a living with my mum, and we currently have over 50 snakes taking over our dining room. When I’m not doing that, I enjoy photography, painting, and crafting. Naturally, I am a busy-body who enjoys working hard and spending time with my family.…

My unsuccessful learning experience was when I was 16 and starting my Maths A level. We had 2 teachers who split the course material between them, one taking pure maths and the other applied maths. The teacher in charge of the pure maths, which had enjoyed up to A level and received an A for (in the days before A* existed, so top marks in other words), was a young man who had just qualified from his PGCE and came to teach us A level maths.…

Since the beginning of fifth grade, I have been involved in the math team. Before I became involved in the club, I considered math a relatively easy and simple subject. However, my first math team meeting proved me wrong. I remember staring down at a ciphering question and feeling absolutely lost. It embarrassed me that I didn’t immediately know the solution to the question, but at the same time, it thrilled me to face a problem I couldn’t answer. Now, my first math tournament in high school was a disappointment. We won nothing but a certificate of participation. Even though we left without a trophy, the experience was enjoyable. During my junior year, I wanted to place in the top 3 with my team members, so I dedicated time at home to practice.…
