Personal Narrative: My First Time On The Armstrong High School Swim Team
You might wonder: “what makes us into who we are”? Well, I have an answer for you, the events we go through. For me, a couple are, the first time on the Armstrong High school swim team, the relationships I made and the unity on the team, and even my first experience with the vast world outside normal life in Minnesota, United States. For example, the first time I was joining the high school swim team I was apprehensive due to the fact that I was only 13-years-old and there would be big, scary 18-year-olds on the team. I showed up to the captain’s practices before the season started, except I didn’t know anyone that was there. Fortunately, the upperclassmen were very nice and we played fun games together, like sharks and minnows and water polo. At the practice, I met other new 7th graders who were also joining while playing the games. Eventually, all of that nervousness faded away and I was excited to go to swim practice every day and swim with my new friends. I remember when we were having a pre-meet(match against …show more content…
We traveled to the Caribbean and visited 7 islands, I got to witness the way they live life there and the different culture as well, not to mention how beautiful it was there.I remember when we went to Saint Kitts island my siblings and grandparents went swimming and, at that time, I had tubes in both of my ears so I had to wear this headband thing to protect them from the water. Because of the headband, I had a rather noticeable sunburn line on my forehead for the next week but it was all worth it for that experience. I learned a lot on that trip, like how they dock the boat and tie it down, banana plants, how friendly the people are there, nature there, and much more. I also observed people living in poverty, who didn’t have the latest and greatest gadgets. Ever since I have tried to never take living in America in a middle-class family for

Many events throughout an individual's life will help to shape the kind of person they become. These events can be both depressing and inspirational. Examples of life altering events may include the loss of a loved one, the birth of a child, near-death experiences, or even participating in large scale events that comply with either their life goals or career paths. One event that has helped to shape my own life was attending the NHSFR, or National High School Finals Rodeo. I qualified as the only sophomore in bull riding, being the only competitor in the top 8 that was not an outgoing senior that year.…

As a child, I was outgoing and talkative, but in 4th grade, I became more self-conscious and shy. That summer, I signed up for The Oak Ridge Otters Summer Swim Team. I was nervous to join because I knew no one. It felt like everyone was judging me for being the new member. A group of teens, maybe in middle school at the time, noticed that I looked lonely and called me over. They talked to me and introduced kids my age. They made me feel less nervous and excited to continue to swim. This was the first team that showed sports wasn’t about the sport itself, but also growing friendship and memories. The middle schoolers also taught me to include others and not to ignore someone for being aloof.…

I have experienced many failures in my life but one stuck out to me more than others. I have wrestled since I was 8 years old. Through all my matches I have wrestled in my life, something hit me. My sophomore year I worked really hard to make it to the state tournament. Going into the sectional tournament, my record was 19-3. I had a by the first round which put me in the semi-finals. After winning my semi-finals match 12-4, that put me in the finals against a kid I wrestled 3 times before this. He pinned me the first time we wrestled and the next 2 times we wrestled I pinned him. Going into this match I had a lot of confidence because I knew I could win. I underestimated the want he had to win. He surprised me and came out strong. My sectional…

As a freshman and sophomore, I was a part of the track and field team at my school, Emerald High. I competed in many events, ranging from the 100m dash to the 4x800m relay. I have had many great achievements, like making it to the State Qualifier as a freshman, and competing at the South Carolina state championships in the 4x800m, placing fifth, as only a sophomore. However, along with the wins came great losses. A prominent part of my losses was a sprinter from my neighboring town’s track team. She was an amazing sprinter who was one of the best female runners on her team. We competed in similar events, two of those being the 200m and 400m. Anytime I ran the two events when we competed against her team she was always in my heat, usually in one of the lanes on either side of me.…

Life’s as usual in my life until a date appeared on the calendar. March 9th: Track Team Tryouts. I thought about trying out for the team; and after a silent debate in my head featuring the pros and cons of being on the team, I decided to I’d run again this year. Although I knew I was capable of making the team , I also knew I had to get back in shape. “Let’s turn theses flabs into abs then.” I told myself.…

To this day I compete in my high school swim team, and yet I can’t seem to forget tryouts. All I remember is that I wasn’t sure of just how good I needed to be, so I spent five hours a day in the pool, burning my back just to make sure that I had done everything I could. That is to say that I see myself as a highly competitive individual, and I also have seen myself limited by my financial background. Maybe I couldn’t compete in the swim club, or maybe I couldn’t go to the FCCLA (a club) national competition this year because the trip to California was too expensive, but if something I am sure of, is that if I could, I would have. Now, surely I am unique, as it is technically impossible for someone to be exactly like anyone else, and what separates me from the rest, I think, is my tenacity, my need to grow. As a young child, I was constantly compared with to my older brother. He had good grades, he was smart. Being the youngest in probably most situations (I started school early) I was never heard, I was to follow examples, but I wanted to be the example. I want to be great, and I will be regardless of what challenges I have to face, or what barriers people put in front of me, I will be…

My high school cross country coach has been a very influential person to me. He has mentored me and encouraged me through four years of cross country. Because of his direction I trained myself into one of his fastest runners. I didn’t just get faster, I also learned a very important life lesson. To always try my best and be determined to achieve my goals. In one year I dropped my 5k time from a 19:08 to a 17:58. A result of my dedication. I know I won’t be the fastest runner, but I can be the hardest working…

For nine months out of the year, twelve hours a week, my main focus in life was photography. At school, the main photojournalist for the yearbook is me. Yearbook is basically an editorial for schools. In order for the team to create a successful product, we must communicate and work together. My yearbook team taught me the importance of time management and cooperation in order to do our jobs. The yearbook communities of schools must be diligent in order for a functional team and a successful book. The dictionary definition of a community is “a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals”, and I feel that the yearbook team is my community.…

Am I the only one who gets anxiety when getting ready to run during track season? It was a hot day in the month of May, our shuttle hurdle team was preparing to run our race that you decide if we would go to state or not. As we were warming up we all felt anxiety rush upon us. We all knew that just by one little mistake we would not be going. We all knew that if we messed up our teammates would not be able to forgive us. This is the feeling of anxiety. We had tried so hard to make it to where we are today and now that day is here. This is anxiety. As I set in my blocks waiting for the gun to go off, my arms begin to shake. This is anxiety.…

“Take your marks. GO!” I leap from the starting blocks and into the chilling water holding a streamline until I begin my underwater pullout. As the race continues I push myself harder and harder as I begin to fatigue until I finish. Looking up at the clock I think to myself, I need to go faster, I can go faster, I will go faster. I hop out of the water and take my spot in line behind my teammates, preparing for the second of six 100 yard breaststroke sprints from the blocks. From each team, BGSC to PAA to LOSC I have forged friendships and emotional bonds with my teammates found almost nowhere else in my life; which is bound to happen after training, competing, talking, laughing, and spending twenty plus hours a week with each other, The only…

My freshman year i joined the dance team and it was the best thing that ever happened to me then the year was over. I had to move on to the high school where they would have us tryout and divide us JV and Varsity. It is that one thing you wait all year for this was mine, I was so excited for the new opportunities I was going to encounter. However I was quickly disappointed when I made jv and not varsity. The thing is I knew it might happen but when you show up to your first team meeting and there's only 5 other girls you quickly realize there is no team. We would not even be able to compete which was by far my favorite thing.I was disappointed but powered through the year. After the year was over only 2 of us were left on the team, Kearstin…
