Personal Narrative: My First Track Team At Emerald High
As a freshman and sophomore, I was a part of the track and field team at my school, Emerald High. I competed in many events, ranging from the 100m dash to the 4x800m relay. I have had many great achievements, like making it to the State Qualifier as a freshman, and competing at the South Carolina state championships in the 4x800m, placing fifth, as only a sophomore. However, along with the wins came great losses. A prominent part of my losses was a sprinter from my neighboring town’s track team. She was an amazing sprinter who was one of the best female runners on her team. We competed in similar events, two of those being the 200m and 400m. Anytime I ran the two events when we competed against her team she was always in my heat, usually in one of the lanes on either side of me. …show more content…
We had similar running strategies, and stayed very close to each other for the majority of the race, every time being the two lead runners that the crowd would cheer for and that the other girls were trying to catch up to. However, as we would come close to the finish, a gap would start to form between us. This gap widened, with her getting further and further in front of me until we finally got to the finish line, where she would get first place and I would get second. In my eyes, this was a huge failure. It happened every time that we competed, which was often. My teammates were aware of the one sided rivalry, as they cheered me on during the races with knowledge of how important it was for me if I won the race I wanted to be the better athlete and I knew I was capable of beating her. I was always a good sport about it. I would congratulate her on her win everytime. Yet deep down I was angry and frustrated. I would beat myself up inside because I knew my abilities, and I knew that the race could have had a completely different

Not making this team hurt her and made her overanalyze everything she did on the field. But she learned to push those thoughts aside and just to go out and put in the extra work. This part inspired me because I have tried out for the Olympic Development Program here in Iowa and did not make the team. From experience I can say this fail makes you over think everything you do and also makes you ask yourself if you really are committed to soccer and that you can overcome this failure. Like her I used that fail as fuel to prove myself and just to work on getting better so when I try out again I can get different…

In 2008, I was a eight year old and, regrettably, a member of the Saint Joseph Cross Country team. I consistently finished in the last five runners, and despised every moment that I spent training for the race season. Even though I began running cross country in elementary school, I was never a natural. After years, I was allowed to quit. By the time I was a freshman in high school, I had forgotten my hatred of running. After much enticement from my mother - a runner herself - I joined Bowling Green High School’s Cross Country team. Halfway through the first practice, I remembered every reason why I had quit the sport years earlier. Regardless of how much I begged my mom, she insisted that I finish the season. I was stuck with two choices:…

Quite possibly the most significant time of my life was during my senior year as part of the Edison High School football team. The story of our 2006 season is a reflection of my life and testimony to my beliefs and values. Underdogs from day one, we represented not only our school, but also our community and families. Early expectations of the 2006 Eagles were low and the surrounding community was under the belief that Edison would be lucky to go 6-4 with the inexperienced players and the loss of such a talented senior class. Suddenly, I was starting as the outside linebacker/defensive end for the first time in my career along with 18 brand new starters. Unexpectedly, a green group of replacements were 5-0, half-way through our season. After…

I started doing good in 12s but not as good as I wanted to and was expected. Thomas became my full time coach and I actually became really fond of him. We went to a lot of different camps that I would get invited too and was getting better. Around this time, a girl that had just started playing tennis started to come to practice and I knew who she was because I played her and my dad told me that her dad was a doctor he worked with. I tried to be nice with her but I didn't really become friends with her and she became closer to another girl named Laura. I was still friends with them and would walk with them but it was more their friendship then me with them. We all ended up traveling together with Thomas to different tournaments and that was always really fun, and that was around the time that tennis really became my life. I started realizing how many times I would say "can't. have tennis" and it didn't really bother me much, at first. My friends understood when I couldn't spend the night because i had tennis early the next day or when I couldn't do anything on weekdays and most weekends but that was tennis and that was…

From what I could see, the team had great team cohesion, and they seemed to be communicating well. However, this player is clearly on of team’s better players. I am just wondering what that does for the rest of the team. I know in my experience with dance, there was always that one dancer that was the “star.” There are just some people who are naturally good at what they do. Yes, they work hard, but there is something else there that aids in them excelling. In the dance, both high school and college, there are favorites among the teachers. I know, for myself, I would be sometimes envious of the attention they received, but then I took that energy to push and challenge myself to dance up to their level. I am interested to see how the other players view this one girl and how they may use this as a way to better themselves as players. In dance, my teacher always stressed the importance that you should stand next to someone or dance with someone better than you. That way it encourages you to be better. I figure for sports it can be the same sort of dynamic. There is always going to be someone better. As an athlete and performer, it is important to find the balance of looking up to someone but also validating your own attributes. That is why sports psychology is helpful. It can be a tool to help people find their role on the team, and how not to become too discourage or constantly compare yourself to others. Instead, find the positives in athletes’ performance while recognizing areas for…

Softball isn’t just a sport, it’s a passion. Last year, in a softball game, I tripped and cause us to get all three outs. My team, as well as my coach, was very upset. As a consequence, I sat the next two innings out. Sitting alone and thinking about how my mistake could cost us the game, I felt as though I needed to prove to my team that I didn’t mean to and that I could help get the game back. I finally convinced my coach to let me back in the game. An inning had gone by I still hadn’t proven myself. I was getting nervous. Bottom of the ninth, my chance came. Playing shortstop, a ground ball was headed straight for me. I caught it, and threw it to first. First then through it to third, and I tagged the runner coming from second base. A triple play! We were three points ahead and had won the game. I had such a feeling of self-accomplishment and pride. I had proven to the team that I was a…

There are many aspects why female and male athletes should not compete together. Although one reason may be because of physiological differences, societal barriers also prevent female athletes from competing with males. What it means to be male or female is one of the hardest things to decipher. This is one of the more bigger struggles between masculinity and femininity. One institution that specifically targets this idea of gender differences is professional sports. Women are challenged because of these gender differences to be accepted into a male dominated institution. Female athletes are encouraged and in many cases forced to under appreciate themselves by the media because of sports. Our society tends to under appreciate women who play…

We wanted to keep the team fun, enjoyable also competitive. After all of the practice we have done, I told my teammates that this is our year to rise above obscurity. When I became a junior, I also became the captain for that sport as well, when the season started we won a few meets and then we went to district meets. Freshman year my best friend and I made an impulse decision to go to the high school cheer clinic. As a way to make friends and to make both are moms happy, since they were both cheerleaders . After the first day of clinic we were both hooked. Cheerleading to most is full of popular girls that are selfish, snobby, and don't have a sense of morality. But to me and my team we are nothing like that. My team is a mismatched group of girls that found a love in cheering on other sport teams. Spending upwards of 8 hours with the same twenty six girls a week makes anybody to become incredibly close and that is what I have gotten to. We may fight but, with these groups of girls my life would of never been the same. We are all there for eachother no…

I liked watching soccer, and the decision to join varsity soccer seemed healthy. Initially, I was not able to control the ball or to run quickly enough, so I did not get to play during the matches. There was no way I could talk my way into earning any playtime; therefore, I worked on improving myself. I stayed for ten minutes after practices to kick more balls, and I woke up before school start to run two miles. The minute when I was called to play at a match was an achievement. Throughout the season, I kept improving and earned more play time, while leading a happy and healthy life. At the end of the season, I received a surprising award for the “Most Improved Player,” which I did not take for granted. Playing soccer was pleasing thanks to…

As an athlete you can get to see the different types of attitudes and emotions other athletes have, good or bad. In high school I started playing sports which really got my competitive side out but it also came with emotions I didn’t know how to control at the time. My first time playing volleyball I started off by practicing and playing with the varsity team at school. When season came along I didn’t make the cut for varsity so I was put on the J.V. team with girls who didn’t know how to play that well. That’s when my emotions started to show because I wasn’t used to playing with a team where I was the only one that knew what we had to be doing. After that season was over the next two years I was on varsity and I was still not able to get ahold of my attitude and emotions. I was aware that this was a problem for the team and I and that I looked bad but I didn’t know how to control it so I let it be. My last season I had learned to control myself but it was very limited and it wasn’t enough. When I finally graduated my coach asked me if I would like to help him with the team, I agreed. I started going to their games and practices and noticed two of the girls had the same attitudes as I did and felt how frustrating it was to deal with them but I decided not to pay attention to them. It was at one of their games when it hit me and I realized that I used to look as bad as they did and I was really embarrassed of myself. At that point I made myself a promise that I would keep my emotions and attitude on check if I played in college I wanted a fresh start and I’ve kept my promise till this…

I stood there, with my knees bended and sweaty hands resting on my thighs as I watched my team slowly travel up the field towards me with the ball aiming right to my position as midfielder. I began getting anxious knowing that if I mess up even a smidge of a centimeter my “teammates” would have my head on a platter. So focused on the scene laying out in front of me I almost just missed my name being yelled out by our team captain Alexia. “Don’t mess up! Pass the ball to me and I will do the rest and score the winning goal!” Of course she was going to score the goal, doesn’t she always. Finally the girls had reached my position and passed the ball swiftly to me. I turned and ran as the midfielder of the opposing team was behind me in arms reach distance. Defense on the opposing team was good because they had Alexia blocked I couldn’t find an entrance. I started panicking and I kicked it to the only person open right then. They all began yelling at me simultaneously because lucky for me I kicked it to the one girl who was lost in her land of unicorns and rainbows and the ball zoomed right past her cluelessness and into the other team’s territory. Well the ending to this tale is that we lost, of course. In sports there are all different types of people. Tall, short, skinny, big, girl, boy, black white but it’s the category that they fall in that lets you know who you’re dealing with when it comes to teamwork. The naturals, the infamous ball hog, the one that is on the team but not really on the team, and the ones who are always yelling at you and manage to get under your skin every time.…

Logan’s motivation is constantly pushing her to further improve her abilities in countless things, but more specifically is her athletic motivation. Her room, a small room which she shares with her sister, of a small house, is lined with many trophies and ribbons. Logan is no mediocre athlete; she is constantly working to excel. She practices every day, whether it be on her personal free time or at formal practice. She has a passion, a love, for what she does. She is a state champion swimmer and a national competitor in mixed martial arts (MMA). To her fellow athletes, she is an inspiration. She is outstanding, but she never claims to be the best; she is admirably humble. She is selfless and supportive to all her teammates no matter what their skill level. If they are of higher skill than her, she will ask for advice and she will still be there on the sidelines, cheering them on as she would want people to do for her when she is competing. If they are of lower skill than her, she will never make fun of you, rub things in your face, or laugh at you, but rather she will work with you, mentor you, to teach you what she knows to help you be the best you can be. Her good sportsmanship can be reflected in her as she wishes luck to, congratulates, or simply says “good job” to a competitor. She is an optimist that is constantly smiling in the face of doubt.…
