Personal Narrative: My Grahek Family
Have you ever met a family as adventurous as mine? We’ve been to 2 different countries, Canada, and Australia. If you like adventure then you’ll want to meet the Grahek family.

To start of the first on the list is my dear old grandma. Her first name is Maribeth, and last name Knoble. She was born in Los Angeles, California. She grew up in Iowa. She likes to sew, read, and shop. She has 2 daughters, 2 grandsons, and one granddaughter. She also has 3 step grandsons and 5 step-granddaughters. She has been married 3 times; one of her ex-husbands is alive and married and one died. Her current husband has a house in New York, so they go to live out there for a month, then they come back to Minnesota for one month. She is retired and lives in Sartell,

Mitchell was born in Fargo, North Dakota. He was born with a clubbed foot and other irregularities with his left leg. Some people thought that It was going to affect his brain but it didn’t. He was 2 1\2 when we moved to Sartell. He had over 20 surgeries on his foot, he had more than 5 casts, and 1 external fixator on his entire leg when he was four. He played hockey, but now he coaches hockey. He also plays soccer and baseball. He likes to spend time with his friends and has nerf wars with them. My most favorite memories with him are when we went to Knoxville, Iowa and saw the Knoxville Nationals Sprint Car Races. He fishes, hangs out with friends, and plays on his phone for his spare time. He likes the Packers and dislikes vegetables. I love him because we do fun stuff together. I would describe him as unselfish, polite, cheerful, and a person who likes everything done correctly.

Do you like reading? Interestingly this 3-time Battle of the Books champion ,likes to read to his name is, Cullen James Grahek. I play hockey, golf, soccer, baseball, and lacrosse. I go fishing and hunting, I also like the outdoors. The memories I have with myself is when I caught a 67-inch sturgeon and when we went to Australia. The reason why I love myself is because it’s myself. At Christmas I sometimes spill the beans on what the presents are. I like fishing and dislike the Packers. I would describe myself as awesome, creative, adventurous, and

My family of orientation is pretty blended, but stayed the same throughout most of my childhood. My family of orientation consisted of my mother, step father (who I call my dad), my half brother, and half sister. My mother married by step father when I was five years old and he was married to my mom until I was about seventeen years old. I took the Family of origin expressive atmosphere scale test and my score was very high, but that confuses me just a little bit. I feel like my family wasn’t as expressive as I wanted them to be growing up. If they were expressive though, it was only because they were angry at one another. If my siblings and I disagreed with my parents, we would be told we were wrong. My mom, at least, has gotten better at…

The first time I met Anastasija was not quite the first time she ‘met’ me. In particular, before starting her high school education at NOVA International Schools, I had heard of Anastasija and her interests through my contact with one of her cousins, Ms. Bela Gligorova, who was my guidance counselor at that time. I was introduced to Anastasija in person in December 2010, right after I finished my college applications. An inquisitive young mind, a polite and thoughtful person, Anastasija’s curiosity and questions about my college application process and my high school accomplishments, struck me as novelty, since Anastasija was only in seventh grade at the time.…

Taking into consideration my Libyan heritage, one might say I was able to experience the best of both worlds as a first generation Libyan-American. They wouldn’t be wrong, growing up, I was influenced by the cultural aspect of a Libyan as an American citizen. I partook in many common Libyan traditions, for instance, I would eat couscous most nights for dinner and learned how to play the darbuka, a Libyan drum held sideways and played with the fingers. I was convinced that everyone lived this way, and I knew nothing outside of my bubble of comfort. It wasn't until my first trip to Libya, during the reign of Dictator Mummar Gadafi, that I realized not everything in the world was perfect and that my childhood was more Americanized…

The first memory I have of being with my Native American tribe, the Ojibwa tribe, is when I experienced a spiritual healing through a homemade sweat lodge. For the first time, I meet my aunt and cousins, and I cleansed and healed my spirit from its impurities with them. Inside the dome was pitch black except the glowing stones emanating stream and illuminating faces. This experience helped me to become understanding and accepting of cultures and traditions that appear different from…

In my early childhood, my parents moved numerous times back and forth between the Untied States and Iran. Eventually, my family ended up settling in North Houston, where my father bought a traditional two-story home in a typical gated community. Throughout the years, the house preserved many struggles, and witnessed many successes between my family and I. However, not only did our home observe our experiences, but it also embraced our culture. Throughout my life, my home has had a revolution of its own; transforming from a dreadful and dull place to a home that I now look proudly upon. However, what I truly value in my home is the fact that it acts as a safe haven for my Persian culture, something that is as delicate and as priceless as my…

There has been many cases in which I have helped an outsider feel welcome. One time in particular is when I played tag with this little boy at church since he was new and no one else played with him. Originally, I was outside eating candy and talking to my friends at church. I noticed that this little boy was standing all alone watching all the other little kids play without him. I thought that maybe he was upset so I went over to him and asked if he wanted the rest of my gummy worms. He seemed nervous at first, but eventually he started talking to me. I learned that he was five years old and he was visiting his grandparents for the weekend. His older brother was outside playing basketball with some of the other older boys at the church, and…

Growing up in a diverse city, the culture around me has always been different. Every person that I see always has a different type of belief than me. I’m a 17 year old Muslim student who lives in Southeast Texas. My father is from the Middle East, and my mother is from Western Europe. My parents migrated as refugees from Croatia to Houston in 1995 due to the ongoing war in Yugoslavia. After they’ve migrated they’ve lived in peace here ever since. However that has changed a lot since 9/11, one of the biggest terrorist attacks in history to ever happen in the United States. Now everyone who originates from the Middle East has been looked at as an abomination, and how we're judged for everything that we believe in. It just happens to be that I was born in the time of all of this monstrosity.…

I used to gag at the thought of running eight hundred meters. There I stood with my heart racing, ready to run five kilometers. To everyone else, this was an unimportant meet that even the coach said he did not care about. It was for me, however, more terrifying than losing my mom in the grocery store when I was a child. My first meet and all I could think of was my speed or lack thereof. I did not have distance spikes. I did not have a muscle roller. All I had was my heart in my throat paired with running shoes. Since the day before, my blood pressure had been rising and continued to do so.…

Personal background starts off small, it changes and grows over time into something big, it grows into an identity. Walking down the hallway at school, seeing someone standing alone, my first instinct is to make conversation, compliment, or even just smile at him or her. This instinct came from someone once telling me an act so small could turn a person's entire life around. As a kid, reading encyclopedias about random topics, consumed my time. Many days were spent coming home to find an injured wild animal in my dad's arms waiting to be saved. My dad would sit outside and draw animals, trees, and anything else he saw. Nothing excited me more than trying to draw whatever my dad drew, and as good as he did. Any assignment that was handed to…

The Armenian community is very tight-knit, traditional and family centered. Participating in events organized by the Armenian Diaspora, for example, AESA Science Fair (Armenian Engineers and Scientists of America,) Homenetmen Navasartian Games & Festival, and the 100th Anniversary Armenian Genocide March demonstrated to me how powerful the Armenian voice is despite being a minority.…
