Personal Narrative: My Hero's Internship
For this assignment I originally was going to interview someone from the Iowa Speedway, but it was kind of hard to find a good contact that could take the time to talk with me. Then I remembered that my uncle, Luke Stand, has been a hockey lover all his life and knew he had a few positions as a sports business professional and coach. So I gave him a phone call and discussed his past and present in sports. Luke Stand gradated from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in 1997, with a degree in Kinesiology and Exercise Science and a minor in Psychology of Sport. During college he played hockey at the university where he was a 4-year Varsity Letter winner. He didn’t participate in any internship because for what he was going for, they didn’t provide many opportunities at that time. After graduation he played professional hockey with for the UHL’s Madison Monsters and Kodiaks. He was the Rookie of the Year in 1997-1998 and Captain the two following season. After wrapping up his own hockey career in 2000 he went on to building other hockey players and teams. …show more content…
His current position title is Amateur Scout and has been in this position for only four months. So he is new to this role, but has a lot of experience with similar things. To put it simply, his job task is to scout amateur players for the Calgary Flames. He travels all around the world to watch individuals play. Luke gathers all this information and brings it back to the team. From there they break it all down to determine the best players that fit with their team. With searching for the best player, he will have to think a lot about player contracts and collective bargaining agreements. He has enjoyed dealing with player contracts because it challenges to him to build a team that spends money wisely but has good player results. He works with a large team of individuals who bring different opinions and resources to this

The reason my academics aren’t going well as you or I would like is because of the several family issues I’ve had to face during my high school career. It began my Sophomore year, I found out my mom needed surgery in her arm so the chances of her cancer spreading would be reduced. I was under a great deal of stress worrying about my mother, taking care of my four siblings making sure they knew everything was going to be okay, even though I wasn’t sure myself. It was all up to me; while my other brother worked to help with bills, my mom being in the hospital, and my dad working. Taking care of my siblings consisted of cooking, homework, cleaning, nightly routine, and putting them to bed. When the work was done it would be around 10 o'clock. It was already tough to buckle down and focus on homework without all the stress. With all this my first semester grade was less than great.…

Following graduation, George Steinbrenner was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force, heading the sports program at Lockbourne Air Base in Columbus, Ohio, before his honorable discharge in 1954. While in the Air Force, George would go on to run a successful coffee stand business as a sideline that quickly grew to six pickup trucks (Nelson, 2013). It was soon clear that no matter what George was doing with his life there were two things he could never give up, being a businessman and surrounding himself with sports. After leaving the Air Force, Steinbrenner went back to school to obtain his master’s degree at Ohio State University (Goldstein, 2014). He tried pursing a football-coaching career, but…

    Mitch Rapp

I am connecting to Mitch because I had a similar, highly influential mentor, such as he had. Stan Hurley has been a salient mentor in Mitch’s short time with the CIA. Mitch has learned more in these months with Hurley than any previous time in his life. Hurley goes into every little detail, and is the most meticulous man Mitch has ever known. Hurley’s influence on Rapp evokes memories of my former basketball coach, Tim Bergstrasser. Tim was the best and most influential coach I have ever had. He coerced out team to work hard each and every time we practiced and played. Many days, I would wish for a facile practice, but was glad after practice when we worked hard and improved a lot as a team. Bergstrasser is similar to Hurley as well because he used to play college basketball, similar to how Hurley was a CIA assassin when he was younger. I think for someone to be an adequate teacher, they need to have experienced the profession that they are teaching themselves. Also, Bergstrasser is similar to Hurley because he teaches us with many real game situations. Hurley improves his trainees skills by situations they would encounter in a real mission: “Back in the woods of Virginia the idea was to find cover while Hurley fired live shots at you” (Flynn 354). Mitch was adequately prepared for missions, and he would not crumble under pressure because of his relentless training. This is exactly…

In the months after his high school graduation, Mark was sent off to Central College in Pella, Iowa. There, he participated in football and got a job outside of his studies. To support himself, Mark worked as a manager at Pizza Hut for all four years he attended school. When I asked about his life as an undergrad, he told me going off to college provided some of the best years of his life. However, having to show up to every practice and event for football while trying to hold down a job and pay tuition proved to be more challenging he expected. Two years after he arrived, Mark decided to retire from the Central College team and transfer to the University of Iowa, home of the black and gold. In the course of this transition, Mark learned how to pay bills, take money, and balance his time accordingly. After his graduation in 1985, Mark was hired to become a head football and baseball coach at a high school in Ventura,…

I spent the next two years working passionately to be stronger, faster, smarter, and varsity quality. My hard work proved to be successful in baseball and the classroom. I was 2015 First Team All Orange County Player, All Sunset League Player two years, and CIF Champion. That hard work and dedication lead to multiple Division I offers. I choose Cal Poly because of the education, the baseball program, and the SLO community. I’ve been asked to share my story with little leaguers and high school athletes. Having grown up in the Tahoe-Truckee area, participation in athletics and other team activities have taken up a vast majority of my fifteen years, and helped me find a variety of things I am passionate about. Though I am remarkably ardent about anything I embark in, skiing has always reigned victorious to all others. My participation in skiing has alluded me an outlet to escape from whatever outside sources weighed me down, and has given me the opportunity to meet a multitude of benevolent people while traveling in exemplary places. Participation in Squaw Valley Snow Sports has taught me a variety of lessons that I not only utilize on the mountain, but in my day to day life.…

As a humans we all have to experience certain situations in life, in order to figure out what we like and dislike. I can honestly say I’ve had my fair share of situations. I started working at Samsung call center as a full time employee. The job had excellent benefits, and room for growth and advancement. While I was working there I thought it was what I wanted, but as time progressed I realized it may not be for me. I had been out of school for 2 years when I accepted this job, so I wasn’t quite sure as to what career path I wanted to take. My decision at the time was to work full time and remain productive with that. Sometime you have to make a few changes within in yourself in order to grow as a person. Just because a certain job makes a decent amount of money doesn’t necessarily mean it is suitable for you.…

For the month of my internship it was like going down memory lane, except more of in a coaches position. It's a day by day process from Monday to Friday that I go in for the internship. Everyday I wake up at 5AM and I arrive before the players get to the weightroom before weightlifting. The first day that I started was to make sure all of the cameras were charged up before I began anything. The next thing I do is check to see what workouts that are being done today so that I can know what to record and what not to record. The reason for that is to show off different workouts so I can show how the team have developed over time from the beginning to the end. Once weightlifting and winter conditioning is completed for football, my job is to create a video of Walsh Universities football teams workouts and use it as a time-lapse to show them at the beginning of spring workouts until the end. The recording is like a building process for them. It's showing all of their accomplishments and their work effort that they are doing to prepare for the upcoming spring ball. As I do that, I'm also put into a coaches perspective with the players. Since I am a past player, I understand and know what they are going through to prepare for spring football. As I record them doing their workouts, I also communicate with them so that they can understand what they are working for and different ways they can improve. I'm also recording some mistakes and mishaps that I…
