Personal Narrative: My Italian Heritage
You've got a ticket in your hand -- Where will you go? What will you do? What will happen when you get there?
My grandmother was a passionate woman. She loved with every ounce of her being, was amazingly selfless, and was adored by everyone who knew her. Aside from her [great] personality traits, something special about my grandma was her love and embodiment of her Italian heritage. I grew up surrounded by laughter and love, with a stomach full of authentic Italian cooking. I am proud of my Italian descent because my family has made sure to keep cultural traditions alive and celebrated. However, despite my love for my culture, I have never had the chance to visit Italy. I would love to walk along the same streets where my grandmother spent

Italy alone holds more than half of the world’s works of arts, ranging from monuments to paintings. This art covers nearly 2,800years of Italian history, ensuring that anyone can find something that appeals to them. Personally, I am specifically fond of artwork stemming from the Renaissance era, which Italy happens to be the birthplace of. If I were to travel there I would have access to original pieces by Leonardo da Vinci, Donatello, Titian- the list goes on and on. Aside from traditional artwork, I would also love to be able to visit Italy’s vast selection of churches and …show more content…
While I have spoken to some of them and been told many endearing stories, it would be much more meaningful to create a personal connection to them. It would be particularly special because I would have the chance to meet the relatives that my grandmother grew up with; if they are anything like her I have no doubt in my mind that I will enjoy their company. Not to mention that they have promised to prepare me some of their best dishes, which makes my mouth water just thinking about. Concerning cuisine I would also like to study their cooking. I learned some of the basics from my grandma before she passed, but now that I am older and more comfortable in the kitchen it would be nice to learn how to prepare some more difficult, traditional dishes. Not to mention the added bonus of being able to eat these said dishes- if I could eat pasta for every meal, I

Italy is changing rapidly with its urbanization and political stability. The reinvention of ideals from Classical Greece and Rome are being reborn. Florence is quickly becoming the center of trade and economic expansion (Benton Rebold & DiYanni, 2008). Wealthy and powerful individuals such as the Medici Family have supported this culture. To complete the property tour, we looked at the bedroom, comfortably proportioned for a queen sized bed and a floor-to-ceiling closet with a large window facing Paolina Park. The attractive bathroom was functional and came equipped with all the essentials. Lastly, we looked at the garage. Maria Laura informed us that Italians refer to a garage as a “car box”. The car box was large enough to accommodate a mid-sized car, a workbench, and storage for tools and seasonal items. I was overjoyed…

I was raised in a Mexican-American home. My parents had my older sister when soon after they graduated high school, so they struggled to provide the economic needs for my older sister’s heart surgeries when she was an adolescent. Because of these conflicts in their life they continued pursuing higher education while allowing my grandmother to look after my sister. They eventually started dedicating their lives to more work than play; therefore, that lead to me and my siblings to raised by my grandmother. Moreover, I grew up living in my grandmother’s house chasing chickens and being forced to eat everything on my plate. My cousins were in the same situation, and we were all around the same age. That lead us to spend everyday together, making…

I talked to my great grandmother, on my moms side, and asked her many questions about our ancestors. "Most of the generations I know about have lived in New Mexico. Usually when people ask us we say Spain because we know our ancestors didn't come from Mexico. I'd say Spain" she said word for word. I also asked her how long ago they came and she didn't know so I assume they came a long time ago.…

The mantra, "breathe in your nose and out your mouth," was the only thing running through my head as I attempted to complete the last half mile of my first cross-country meet, and at least it was running. I on the other hand, was not. I had started the race completely confident in my ability to run three miles, but after a grueling two and a half laps of tripping over tree roots, splashing through mud, and struggling over an enormous hill that marked the last quarter of the lap, I was just ready to go home and take a shower. When my feet crossed onto the threshold of the track where the finish line was positioned, I observed quite a few things. One, the conspicuous red timer was flashing numbers well into the mid-forties range. Two, at least half of the buses in the parking lot seemed long gone. My third and final realization did not occur to me until after I crossed the finish line. As I came to a stop near the water cooler, it finally dawned on me that I had concluded the race in last place.…

I am Indian-American. However, accepting this truth was not as easy when I was younger. During the ages of 13-14, the age in which any child is finding himself or herself, realizing their identity, and coming to a conclusion regarding who they are, it was difficult for me to find a common ground between the two clashing cultures I grew up in. American culture screams individualism, independency, selfishness to benefit oneself, and equality between gender and races, whereas Indian culture asserts collectivism, dependency, strong family ideals, and separation of men and women. These stark differences made it anything but easy for a confused, pre-pubescent child, like myself at the time, to find their identity.…

In 1944, my great grandpa departed America to go to Africa. He encountered many great feats like hot deserts, huge rats, and many other things. Then, he went to France and after that, to Italy for supplies. Finally, he went back to Africa to guard. Holidays were a celebration with huge feasts. My grandma still has the menus that my grandpa had ordered food from. In 1946, my grandpa faithfully returned to America, he was very…

Throughout my seventeen years, I have met and dealt with various groups of people with diverse ethnic backgrounds from school or through my volunteer activities. However, nothing prepared me for my summer job at the new local Walmart store. The first day of my first paying job was also the grand opening day for Walmart at the Dulles Landing store. I have met countless employees and customers with so many different backgrounds and cultures, who communicate with each other in so many different languages. The whole atmosphere at the Walmart store feels like I am in the middle of the busy World Market. There are countless demanding and exasperated customers that I deal with each day at the customer service counter. Through this experience,…

I used to gag at the thought of running eight hundred meters. There I stood with my heart racing, ready to run five kilometers. To everyone else, this was an unimportant meet that even the coach said he did not care about. It was for me, however, more terrifying than losing my mom in the grocery store when I was a child. My first meet and all I could think of was my speed or lack thereof. I did not have distance spikes. I did not have a muscle roller. All I had was my heart in my throat paired with running shoes. Since the day before, my blood pressure had been rising and continued to do so.…

Ever since I was younger, I’ve had a large imagination, filling up my days dreaming up endless scenarios of the future. Thinking of possible careers was never a problem, but choosing out of the many life paths I wanted was. I alternated between wedding planner, creating a notebook filled with torn out pages of poofy dresses and possible wedding locations; author, stuffing short stories and poems into a floral folder; and psychiatrist, researching the process to become a doctor. The thought that these may not be options for me never crossed my mind. I only knew I would do whatever I could to live out the future I saw in my mind.…
