Personal Narrative: My Journey To The High School Of El Salvador
I was born in a small town of El Salvador and I came to the US when I was seven years old. I lived and grew up in Los Angeles with my mom who provided for us by working from dawn to dusk in the many textile mill sweatshops around the city. During my years of high school, I seized every opportunity offered to me so that I could get into the best college I could. I joined clubs and organizations such as Minds Matter, National Honors Society, and Peace Over Violence. The sadness that comes with saying goodbye to the friends you have spent your whole life with when moving is never easy. Throughout my education, I have moved schools 3 times and every time it has been a struggle to acclimate socially, mentally and academically. I started at Diegueno Middle School in the middle of the seventh grade. This was now my second school in only the first half of my first year of middle school. Again I had to adapt to new people and a different course load. This school had a much higher standard of academia then my prior school and at first, I struggled. School felt alien to me. Time passed and I made new friends and I got used to the difficulty. I started high school with the same group of friends from middle school…

For the past two years, on the 1st Monday of the month I have participated in Site Council meetings at my high school along with other Associated Study Body (ASB) members, our principal, school administrators, parents, and teachers. Frequently it was brought up that minorities were not as involved in our school as majority groups. ASB has always been dominated by white students and as a Latina, I found it very intimidating when I joined.…

I came to the United States from Colombia when I was just 3 years old. I was brought into the country of bright opportunities because like every other parent, my mother and father wanted what was best for me. My mother had to give up her dream job in Colombia, which was being an accountant for an essentially important company, in order to facilitate my well-being and open up the doors for my future. As the years progressed, I began to acquire both languages, English and Spanish, but there was a point where I became tongue tied and had to assist in speech therapy. My parents would talk to me in Spanish at home but in school all I would hear was English, my mind was extremely confused to the point that I made my own language by using both tongues in one sentence.…

On the way home, we stopped at a Cracker Barrel for breakfast. During our meal, we got a call from my aunt telling us that my uncle, my mother’s brother, was in the hospital. Only a few days before he had moved back to Guatemala without saying goodbye to me. Once we were back on the road, my mother continued to get phone calls updating us about what was happening down there, as each call came through we all became more and more anxious wait for the answer. I was in fifth grade and ten, on the verge of transitioning into a young woman when I stumbled and fell into a darkness. I like to call this period of darkness my “Purgatory Years.” California is my sunny home state where the sun shines almost the entire year, but literal darkness is what I began to see around every corner that I turned. I felt sad a lot and for reasons that were never really clear to me until I entered into middle school. As I grew older, the darkness only grew with immensity.…
