Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder defined my impairing levels of inattention, disorganization, and /or hyperactivity-impulsivity. Inattention and disorganization entail inability to stay on task, seeming not to listen, and loosing materials, at levels that are inconsistent with age or developmental level. Hyperactivity-impulsivity entails over activity, fidgeting, inability to stay seated, intruding into other people’s activities, and inability to wait—symptoms that are excessive for age or developmental level. ADHD often persists into…
Dennis currently lives with his mother and his siblings. Dennis has run away from home seven times. There were no reports of him being kicked out of the home. Mr. Noah Smith, the mother’s fiancé also resides in the home. He is the father of Dennis’ half-brothers. Mr. Dennis Cooke, the biological father resides in the city of Portsmouth, according to Ms. Barner. She reported he has had engagement in Dennis’ life, but he is currently incarcerated due to his failure to pay child support. Dennis obeys some rules. Dennis is sometime subject to appropriate consequences for bad behavior and sometimes receives appropriate rewards for good behavior. Ms. Barner reported she usually withholds Dennis’ allowance and cell phone when he fails to comply with the rules of the home. She also stated when he does what is asked and expected of him, she rewards him with…
What do you know about ADD or ADHD? How can ADD/ADHD affect a student if they are not treated in time? "Attention deficit disorder (ADD) and Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are condition listed as developmental disorder in the classification manual for psychiatric, psychological, and mental disorder." (Steinberg & Othmer 2) When people hear about ADD/ADHD they assume that only kids and teens have this problem, but there have been some cases that this diagnosis has been found when someone reaches adulthood. ADD/ADHD today is a really common disorder; on average 2 out of 20 adult students have ADD/ADHD and they do not know they have it. If this diagnosis is not treated at a young age, people that have ADD/ADHD and who are not aware they have it can struggle a lot, especially when they get into college.…
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a common diagnosis given to children and adult. According to webmd.com, “Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a condition in which a person has trouble paying attention and focusing on tasks, tends to act without thinking, and has trouble sitting still. It may begin in early childhood and can continue into adulthood.” This website also informed me that without treatment and individuals life will have problems, from school, to work, and even their relationships. Another common misconception is that ADHD was once known as ADD. There are treatment options for this disorder, but no cure, the treatment options…
I struggle with my undiagnosed ADHD, I would say I have a love hate relationship with it. It messes with a lot of my daily duty’s it makes it harder for me to study, and it even makes it harder for me to find friends who can deal with it. Even though it does have its ups and downs I don’t mind it much at all. I believe most of my creativity comes from my ADHD. How would I have built the things I have without it? I wonder, how different would this paper turn out if I was…
According to National Institute of Mental Health [NIMH] (2006), it is estimated that 3-5% of children in the U.S. have ADHD; that is approximately 2 Million school aged children. This percentage does not include the adults that have been diagnosed. Although it has been around for such a long time; researchers still do not know exactly what causes ADHD. With so many children being diagnosed with ADHD it is a bit scary to know that not even scientists, doctors, or researchers know what the exact cause is. There are no medical tests that prove it to be a disease; it is a neurological disorder.…
ADHD, or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is not something to laugh about. It is a serious problem that a lot of people now face. It is actually a really difficult thing to deal with. I personally have dealt with having ADHD since I was in the 3rd Grade. ADHD is as serious as any other disorder, such as Autism. Living with ADHD is being nowhere near normal. A lot of people don't understand how serious this condition really is. It is something that can't be seen. Symptoms of ADHD are usually inattentiveness, hyperactivity, and impulsiveness. Some of the things that kids with ADHD must deal with on a daily basis are needing special accomodation in school, getting used to taking medication, and socializing.…
These are the 4 resources that I have read and plan to use in my resource paper…
For the past 100 years how to treat children with ADHD has been among controversy. I am sure you are wondering what is ADHD? Several families have found themselves asking the same questions. ADHD is a common developmental and behavioral disorder. It is characterized by poor concentration, distractibility, hyperactivity, and impulses that are inappropriate for the child's age. Children with ADHD are easily distracted by sights and sounds in their environment, cannot concentrate for long periods of time, are restless and impulsive, or have a tendency to daydream and be slow to complete tasks. (webcenter.health.webmd.netscape.com/content/article/45/1663-51211, 2006). In my research…
I was a difficult child from the moment I was born. I cried when anyone but my mother held me, I hated loud noise so eating out at a busy restaurant was impossible, and I generally was displeased with the world. As I grew older, it was discovered that I suffered with Attention Deficit Disorder, or ADD. I feel these experiences have shaped my gender and what I identify as.…
My family is extremely poor, living paycheck to paycheck and off of food stamps. My father is a construction worker/contractor who emigrated from Communist Bulgaria after the fall of the Iron Curtain, while my mother is a stay-at-home housewife with no higher education. As I grew older and more capable, naturally I was expected to help contribute in some way. This led to me having to constantly work and seek jobs from as early as 13 years old (typically babysitting or paper-route type jobs at this point). This is normal for a teenager, most teens work odd jobs for some extra pay, but most of the income I made had to be put towards paying bills. Balancing work and school life was something I learned to do early, however, it became harder to…
Did you know 6.4 million people in America are diagnosed with ADHD, I myself am on those people. ADHD stands for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, in a basic summary it is when a person has an abundant amount of energy and can't focus on a certain subject or task. Of these 6.4 million people that are diagnosed, the average age of diagnoses was 7 years old. I believe this an extremely high number of diagnoses at a young age that should not go overlooked. These children with ADHD are then given medicine, by their parents, that contains stimulants such as amphetamines which is supposed to reduce their excessive energy.…
Growing up I had to struggle with my learning disabilities add to that having to learn a whole new language it made my life a challenge that I had to overcome , as well as learning from the many failures that came with it. Imagine sitting in a classroom listening to a teacher talk about verbs, pronouns and action verbs, but the only thing you know it that you don’t seem to understand a word that she is saying. Being a Hispanic female means that the first language I learned was spanish, my family all spoke spanish and so did the people around me. When I was nine years old my mother was told that I need extra help in school because I had a learning disability. I didn’t understand thing as fast as others and I would confuse many words around.…
I found out about five years ago that I have ADHD and take medication to control my ability to focus and complete tasks. This disability has directly contributed to my lack of self-esteem and feelings of worthlessness that I have struggled with my whole life. In school I was the student that could not sit still. I talked too much, I did not pay attention and I just could not stop myself from answering all the questions before the other students could. I was reading before I started school so I was always racing a head of the class if they were reading page nine, I was already on page eighteen the teachers could not keep my interest. The only thing that kept me from having a terrible experience in my school years was my personality. Most teachers loved me so I could get away with my distractive behaviors.…
I am an unlikely English teacher. In kindergarten, I was diagnosed with Visual Dyslexia and Hyperactivity Disorder (now called ADHD). I grew up in poverty, and my only means to a Bachelor’s degree was a federal Pell Grant. Learning has been a lifelong passion of mine, thanks to the adult influences in my life, but my path has been a rocky one. I needed special intervention in school. I was unorganized, struggled with graphic learning (maps, math, Social Studies), and worked extra hours to attain the skills I needed to survive in school. None of the influential adults in my life attended college, but a set of encyclopedias taught me that they valued education tremendously. My mother used these encyclopedias as a child, so when we moved, my…
