Personal Narrative: My Mission Trip To Nicaragua
My dad had been praying about our family going on a missions trip. You will never guess what happened at our missions conference at our church on October 2011. The missionaries from Nicaragua invited our family to come visit them for a week. I didn’t want to leave the United States. I was sad to think about traveling that far away and leaving behind my family and friends.

We started praying about going and in February of 2012 we boarded the plane at Gerald R Ford International Airport and headed to Nicaragua. I was still sad, but it was kind of exciting to be on an airplane for the first time. The first thing I noticed when we got off the plane was the smell. It was a hot, pollution type smell that is very hard to describe but impossible to forget.

We had rice, beans, shredded beef and a corn tortilla. The food was different and I didn’t really like it, but I tried to eat as much as I could to be nice. I was so happy when they had Coca~Cola to drink. We drank a lot of pop because it was cheaper than bottled water and we weren’t allowed to drink the water at the church.

The next two days my mom and sisters and I helped with a girls soccer camp. My soccer team back home made cards and bracelets for everyone and we even gave each girl their own uniform. The girls were really happy, they acted like it was Christmas. It was hard to communicate since we didn’t know much Spanish and it was really hot.

On Saturday we went on visitation and saw the houses up close. That was different. Sunday was church and it was hot inside the building. Because it was hot, they kept the doors open and beggars would walk into the church. It was also really loud because you could hear the traffic outside. I didn’t really like church, it was boring because it was hot and I didn’t understand what they were saying. The Nicaraguans were very happy we had come, I understood that even without knowing what they

Never have I woken up faster than getting a phone call at 1am saying, “I need you STAT to H4104!” Racing from the call room to the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, I had a million thoughts running through my head. Why is the RN calling me STAT? Is the patient coding? Is the intra-aortic balloon pump I am responsible for not functioning? When I arrive, the patient’s pressures were spiraling downward and the surgeon said he must go back down for surgery. Adrenaline pumping through my veins, I realized this was not an emergency simulation I had been taught – this was real. As soon as we reach the OR, the patient went asystole. Immediately, anesthesia started injecting medications, the OR staff lined up to do compressions and I managed the balloon pump; we…

It started just as any normal Saturday would; December 8, 2012, I woke up, went through my morning routine and went to soccer practice. I was competing for a spot on the North Carolina ODP (Olympic Development Program) soccer team. Training was being held at fields about two hours from my house. I sat in the backseat of my dad’s car with my two sisters and as we rode to the fields I began to mentally prepare myself for how I would play my best and make the team.…

First off, trip to Vietnam was truly a blessing. I did not expect so much of the trip until the first day I arrived Vietnam. On my first day, I got an opportunity to meet many great people who were selfless; those who cared more about others rather than themselves. It took approximately 14hours in total to arrive at hotel. Even though the plane ride was only about 5hours, since it was a group trip, it took extra time to ensure everyone is in right place. Despite the exhaustion and drowsiness, no one complained but encouraged others. I was already touched by grace of God before we even began our mission trip. On the second day, I volunteered for the medical service. There were two activities including the medical service, and house painting…

It was Monday, May 30th, 2011. My family was driving home from a hotel we were staying at in Virginia, after going to Kings Dominion for my birthday day the day before. On the way home, we stopped at a Cracker Barrel for breakfast. During our meal, we got a call from my aunt telling us that my uncle, my mother’s brother, was in the hospital. Only a few days before he had moved back to Guatemala without saying goodbye to me. Once we were back on the road, my mother continued to get phone calls updating us about what was happening down there, as each call came through we all became more and more anxious wait for the answer. Then it came it just wasn't the answer we were hoping for, my mother began pushing on the walls of the car as if they were…

Anybody could have told me he or she were going on a mission trip four years ago, I would have gave them a simple nice reply, then I would have forgotten all about it. That changed after I experienced my first mission trip to Arkansas. Today if anyone talks to me about a mission trip, I become very enthusiastic. I start asking them many questions, and want to know every detail about their…

We departed from my hometown (Montecristi) to Santo Domingo on April 12, 1993 at 7:00 a.m. I went by and got there four hours later. In the airport, we went to the American Airlines counter and checked in for my daughter and me. We went through security. It was really empty because it was very early. After that we went to our gate. We walked around the airport and took a seat to wait for a while. I took my daughter to a cafeteria to eat some food and a soda. We were very early so we had time to walk. Two hours later, we went back to the gate to board the plane. I am sure that my daughter had no idea what was going on, and luckily she was a very quiet child, so I was not nervous.…

Objectively, I went into this situation thinking that there would not be many differences between the different denominations. As the service continued I noticed that there were numerous references to Pope and the different prayers that I did not understand. I am very familiar with communion, but communion was only served once a month in the church I grew up in.…

Last Summer, I visited Costa Rica on a kayaking trip with Falling Creek, a summer camp in Tuxedo, NC. Every year, 20 or so kids get invited to the program called HUCK, where you go kayaking in places around the world. Last summer, all of the kids that were invited went to Costa Rica where we would have a great time experiencing new culture and great whitewater. The First few days were great and those were some of the most powerful, best rivers I have ever kayaked.…

In June of 2015 I went on a mission trip with my Youth Group of First Baptist Church to London, England. When over there we would be staying in a tiny town outside of the city, Stanmore. Being religiously diverse town someone could have a Muslim neighbor on one side and a Jew on the other side. Some of us in the group felt the coordinator for our trip exaggerated. After months of fundraising and preparing for the trip it finally came and excitement filled the air.…

After we ate a few donuts and got everything as in order as they could be, the shuttle arrived. That is when I got nervous to get on an airplane. I went to my two dogs, Bella an English Bulldog and Casper my ten year old Pit Bull and gave them kisses bye. We all went outside with our luggage and loaded up the shuttle van. Our driver's name was Chris and he was very friendly and funny. He told us about his son in the marines and my papa, a marine himself, told him all about when he was in active duty. My papa served in the Vietnam war in 1969 and 1970. They chatted the whole ride to the airport. I was silent. I was nervous…

Christmas of 1998, I made my second trip to Spain. I remember that my grandmother gave me money everyday to walk down to the candy store. When my parents would meet their friends in the bars, some of the other kids would walk with me to buy the candy. I bought a lot of candy cigarettes because I thought they were cool. All of the children there were really nice and friendly. They all wanted to teach me Spanish and they liked for my mom and I to speak English with them. Several nights there, we went to a country house with our friends. The men cooked dinner, the women chatted, and the kids played soccer. We spent a lot of time with friends while we were there.…
