My Mom’s Macbook Pro
I was thirteen years old when I ripped open my Mom’s Macbook Pro. Using a screwdriver, pliers, and a toothpick I disassembled the computer part by part, organizing each piece into different sections, not knowing any of their functions or purposes. I was marveled by each stick of RAM, connected circuit, and processor. As I continued to dive deeper, I soon found the hard drive. A small three by three inch box that could hold hundreds upon thousands of bytes of information. I was awestruck. I was able to hold hundreds of documents, pictures, and songs, all in the palm of my hand. From here I gazed over its sleek black mother board, intrigued as to what all of the golden dots and miniscule black boxes did. My curiosity was sparked, and my Mom’s computer was in ruins. Furthermore, igniting my obsession with the hardware of computers.
Ever since I was a kid, I have wanted to know about how things work: how a

While there are various noteworthy engineering strands, the one that stands out the most to me is computer engineering. Computer engineering appeals to me because of its expanse into people's lives, and future opportunities. As a relatively new field, computer engineering has grown exponentially over the past few decades. These new innovations and gadgets have had a great impact on my life since the day I was born. SMART Boards occupying each of my grade school classrooms. Then at the age of ten, after a summer of meticulous yard work for my neighbor, I bought my first apple Ipad. From here more and more technology began to enter my life. Each new laptop and smartphone making my life somewhat easier and faster; starting a snowball effect of me being my family’s go to person for help with their slow computers. Now, today, there's not a square foot of my room that doesn’t contain some form of technology. And I owe it all to computer

Due to the bits explosion, the world changed very suddenly. Almost everything is stored in a computer somewhere. Court records, grocery purchases, precious family photos, radio programs… It is all being reduced to zeroes and ones – “bits.” The bits are stashed on disks of home computers and in the data centers of big corporations and government agencies. The disks can hold so many bits that there is no need to pick and choose what gets remembered. So much disk storage is being produced every year that it could be used to record a page of information, every minute or two, about you and every other human being on earth.…

Over the past 30 years the cost of Electronics has steadily decreased. The cost of electronic storage has decreased greatly over the past 30 years as well. In this paper I will be talking about the decrease in the cost of RAM and Hard Drive Storage, how much will a 100TB HDD will cost when it becomes widely available in the future, and how much memory I will be able to buy with $100 in 10 years. In 1956, IBM created the first commercial Hard Drive called the IBM 305 RAMAC which held 5MB and cost a whopping 50 thousand dollars! Electronic storage started being more widespread during the early 1980’s, but it wasn’t until the 1990s that RAM and Hard Drive Storage begin to be cheap enough for the average person. Back in 1981 the price for one MB of Hard Drive storage space was $340! Most people couldn’t afford a computer back in the 1980’s because of the huge cost. Through the 1980’s the cost per MB fell from around $340 during 1981 then to $40 per MB in 1988, and finally to $9 per MB in 1990. The cost of one Bit of ram in 1981 was 0.000425 cents, in 1988 it was 0.000005 cents, in 1995 it was 0.000000158 cents, in 2000 the cost per Bit…

In the era that we live in, computers hold our very existence by having all of our information saved to them. From pictures of our families, to person documents like tax forms or medical records, almost all of these things are stored in some electronic form. This information is typically stored on computers with only one copy of the information, but what would happen if that computer or multiple computers failed? What would happen to all that important information and memories? In some cases they can be recovered but at a high cost. Most data recovery services can cost up to $2000.00 dollars to recover lost data. This can all be avoided by backing up data periodically.…

Personal computers have come a long way over the course of the last several years. Although they are still not on the level of that of a supercomputer, they are extremely powerful and able to accomplish many necessities of every day home life. In my computer at home, I have a quad core Intel I7-2700K processor running at 3.4ghz, a very modern processor capable of incredible things. My personal computer has 16 gigabytes of DDR 3 memory running at 2133mhz, and it has two hard drives each capable of storing 1.5 terabytes of data. It has a basic bluray burner and a programmable mouse and keyboard making everything come together. Finally, my computer runs 3 monitors simultaneously, so I am able to see multiple videos and/or games and/or data all at once. This sounds fantastic, but unfortunately, it doesn’t even come close to comparing with a supercomputer like the one found in Columbia (http://www.nas.nasa.gov/hecc/resources/columbia.html).…

The Red Wolves of North Carolina are the last of their species. There are approximately forty Red Wolves left and they’re all live in the Albermarle Penninsula in North Carolina. Red wolves are on average, five feet long from nose to tail. They’re larger than the coyotes, only averaging three feet from nose to tail. The red wolves, coyotes, and eastern wolf are all from the original “Ancient Wolf”. Since the beginning of wolves, they have been cross breeding to create hybrids. Over time, the ancient wolf evolved into three separate species of wolves. The coyotes have taken over in population and management for controlling the offspring has been bad for years now. In 2012 is when management switched in the Fish and Wildlife organization and…

It helps me understand the world around me, making it possible to find solutions to key problems. The fields of biochemistry, physics, computer science, and engineering interest me the most because they offer innovative ways to solve major problems. With biochemistry, I can diagnose, cure, and prevent diseases currently beyond our grasp. Physics allows me to discover entirely new sources of energy and solving many significant problems. Computer science and engineering allow me to analyze data and create devices that can assist people.…

I’ve been told the impact of a parent’s passing can carry on for years or forever. I was my mother’s primary care giver for two years. In her last four months, along with hospice, I took care of her full time along with maintaining my full time job. She passed in her home surrounded by me and my other two siblings in January. Just three months later my dad, who was not married to my mom, died unexpectedly in his sleep. I am still in the tender times of grief from my mother’s and father’s deaths. Who would think I could fathom writing about such a sorrowful time in addition to writing about the lessons I learned from my mother’s last months and the graceful way she left this earth. I relive this not only because it is kind of…

“I DON’T CARE MOM!” I screamed at the top of my lunges. We were driving along I-95 on the sway home from my successful driver's license test. I was 16. I was normal. The radio played in the background but it couldn’t be heard over my mom yelling. This was the same crap I dealt with every day. I could have sworn that woman tried to find something to fight over: this time it was about how I should, “be more responsible” and “find a job” and “needing to grow up!”…
