Personal Narrative: My Return To Greece
Three years ago when I had gone to Greece for holidays with my mum and my brother, I regretted ever leaving Greece. At first I was pumped, I would be seeing my best friend, Irene and my other close friends, Iro and Dimos. What I found was not what I had expected, everyone had drifted apart, they hardly talked to each other anymore.
My mum saw that I was upset and told me that I was always the one keeping us together, that Irene and Iro never got together but played with each other because they were my friends and that Dimos was never really close to Irene and Iro but hanged out with us because he was my friend. When I went to the park where we used to play all the time, no one was there. It was empty, it surprised me, we used to go out every day and play there, it was so easy. The park was right outside all of our houses. The furthest one being Dimos’s being around twenty-five meters away, Irene’s and mine only being around three meters away and Iro’s somewhere in the middle.
The next day I went back to the park again, I wanted to hang out with everyone but hardly anyone came outside, I went to all of their houses one by one. I was told by her grandma that Irene was out with a friend, so I went to Dimos’s but he wasn’t there either. I was only able to find Iro and we went to the swings

That was the moment I truly saw what distance can do to people. I kept thinking about how things would have been different if I had not moved to Australia, if I had never left Greece. I thought that things would have stayed the same, that things wouldn’t have changed between us. I asked my mum that maybe we can stay there instead of coming back. I hoped that if we stayed in Greece, that maybe things would go back to the way they were. My mum told me that people change no matter what, it wouldn’t be any different whether we were there or not, that things just fell apart quicker since I was not there to keep everyone

At the beginning of the year it felt like I would have never been able to write any paper that was more than two pages long, it just seemed impossible, but for the research paper I actually had to stop myself from going off and writing a twelve page paper. I will admit and say that English is not my strong suit, in fact it is probably one of my more difficult classes. But just because it is difficult does not mean I don’t like it. I like looking for topics that interest me and still fit in with the guidelines, I like getting involved in the paper and researching the topic until it feels like my head is about to explode. I never saw any of that coming, I thought that I was going to have to go through English and just pray…

Alex, and that tree. I’ve lived in two completely different places. For the greater part of my life, in Ecuador, and for the last 4 years, in California. Moving away from the place that I spent my entire life at, has really changed me. I had to leave all of the people I love and everyone I ever knew, and move to a strange place where I had no one except my mom, dad, and brother. Moving to California made me become a new person, a different person than who I was in Ecuador. In the following Vignettes I talk about what has made me into who I was in Ecuador, and what made me into what I am today. I talk a lot about the trip to California, and the first few months here because it was a very traumatic experience for me that pains me to think about even to this day. I’ll always miss the person I was in Ecuador, even if I don’t remember who I was. But I will always love the person that I am today and will continue to better myself and live the best life…

All I remember was how it looked like a ghost town. There were hardly any cars on the road and nothing looked open.. This was not what I was used to. We checked into our room at the Holiday Inn, our new house for a little over a month while finding a house to buy, and I shortly fell asleep, being exhausted from our 12 hour journey. Me, my mom, stepdad, sister, and my cat were all crammed into a little, one room, hotel with two beds and one bathroom, I was miserable. For about a week and a half, a played hookie and helped my mom house hunt. Eventually, she decided I had been out of school long enough. That next morning, my mom pulled me into Guntersville Middle School. I was worried because I was ridiculously shy and figured I would have an extremely hard time making friends, but oh was I wrong. Before homeroom was over everyone in the sixth grade class knew there was a ‘new girl from Texas’. That’s when I met Charlie Conner and Anna…

Greece’s culture is high context, which means that for the Greek culture the meaning of messages is determined by the context or the environment. Most of their communication is implicit. This is the reason why Greeks will interrupt what someone is saying while they try to figure out what is means. This is a common aspect of Greek communication. Greeks tend to speak quite loudly and with a lot of emotion. At times it may appear as if they are yelling and annoyed but it is most likely a normal tone of voice. I've got bad news, I'm afraid I won't be able to go to Bahamas with you after all. What a pity! The doctor has just told me I have to stay in bed for the next three days at least. She says I've got severe respiratory tract infection. I've got temperature, a sore throat and a headache that makes me feel as though there's a tight band around my skull. The medicine the doctor gave me tastes like a poison, and I have to take it four times per day. Still, the body is a wonderful thing and I'm sure I'll make a speedy recovery, and the sooner the better! Enjoy your holiday. I've heard that the food there is…

The male fantasy of being deserted on an island inhabited predominantly by women, old men and children is explored thoroughly in both Mediterraneo and Captain Corelli’s Mandolin. The gendered roles assigned to the invading soldiers as the strong male occupiers of a surprisingly feminized portrayal of the subjugated island are the crux of both the narratives. In both Mediterraneo and Corelli’s Mandolin the respective Greek Islands of Cephallonia and an unnamed magical island in the Aegean Sea, are depicted as feminine and motherly icons that are consequently violated by the Italian aggressors who arrive on the island in their effort to escape from the patriarchal political bindings of their leader.…

When I got to my grandmother’s house I was greeted by Dennis, one of the mentally challenged guys that lived with my grandmother. He gave me a hug and showed me that he was listening to his mp3 player. I looked to see what he was listening to; it was Ring of Fire by Johnny Cash. Johnny Cash was his favourite singer. He started to dance and signed for me to start dancing with him. I started to dance letting my feet glide, following Dennis wherever he went. Dennis started to sing “Do, do, do...” and Dean; the other mentally challenged guy, came around the corner, looked at me, and started to laugh. He walked by with his curious stride and with his hands behind his back. I could hear Tony, my grandmother’s foster boy playing with his Xbox in the other room. He was mocking the sound of a machine gun. He was playing Call of Duty. As I walked in he asked “Charlene, do you want to play with me?” I knew that he wanted to play multiplayer, but I had to go talk to my grandmother. “Not right now bud, I have to talk to your mom first.” I walked out of the room to go find my grandmother. She was in the kitchen making dinner for the boys. She always had an early dinner. “Hi nanny.” I asked. “Hi dear, how was your day? I am just making dinner for the boys; you can help yourself if you want anything.” “My day was good. We had an assembly today and I don’t have very much homework.” “That’s great, I am glad everything is going good.” My grandmother put all of the food into the boy’s bowls and called for them to come and eat. The strong smell of pea soup…
