My return to school has been a long time coming. I have been at my current job for ten years. I
currently work at Regions Bank as a Branch Team Leader and Commercial Banking Specialist. There was
one event recently in my life that has really driven me to return to school.
Six months ago I was working downtown for Regions Bank when my Commercial Banker called me
unexpectedly. He asked if I had heard the news that his current Business Banking Assistant had put in
her two weeks’ notice and I told him that I had not heard the news. He said that I was the first person
that came to his mind to replace her. I was flabbergasted and very excited about the prospect. Two
weeks later I am in that position and loving life.
It was exactly what I had always dreamed of, managing
clients, closing loans and all without sales goals.I really enjoyed working for my manger also.He was
very supportive, encouraging and always came to work with a smile. While I was enjoying this new job
there was one hitch, I was doing all of the work and I hadn’t officially been given the offer letter or taken
a pay increase. I was told over and over to be patient. The offer letter is coming soon and they are just
working out a few kinks. Two months into the position they finally sit me down and say that sadly the
position is no longer needed in the Tallahassee market. They are very apologetic and explained that it
was decided by people above them.
I am now working back in the branch with the sales goals and also am taking on commercial tasks as
needed. From this experience I learned that due to the fact that I don’t have a degree I will always feel
stuck in the banking world. I have been in banking for ten years and I have been blessed to have that
experience.I just feel that it is important to have the degree to be able to move to other professional
professions
