Personal Narrative: My Sophomore
At the end of my Freshman year my family had finally closed a deal on a house, and with that closing another door of opportunity opened. Living in this new location put us in a different school district, and my father was pretty insistent that i tried going to regular high school. Which my mother would then interject with, “The boy is doing fine and he is loving what he is doing. Why would we change that?”. Now you might be thinking along the same lines as my mother. If i had friends, structure, and was enjoyed the curriculum i was doing, then why would i switch? Why not just let this opportunity go by and keep on chugging along? Fortunately, this story is a little more interesting than that. I decided that i wanted to try and do my Sophomore

The reason my academics aren’t going well as you or I would like is because of the several family issues I’ve had to face during my high school career. It began my Sophomore year, I found out my mom needed surgery in her arm so the chances of her cancer spreading would be reduced. I was under a great deal of stress worrying about my mother, taking care of my four siblings making sure they knew everything was going to be okay, even though I wasn’t sure myself. It was all up to me; while my other brother worked to help with bills, my mom being in the hospital, and my dad working. Taking care of my siblings consisted of cooking, homework, cleaning, nightly routine, and putting them to bed. When the work was done it would be around 10 o'clock. It was already tough to buckle down and focus on homework without all the stress. With all this my first semester grade was less than great.…

Throughout my years of high school I have always strived for the best grades that I could attain, and they didn’t come easy. There were plenty of distractions that had driven me off course. Whether it was long hours at practice, volunteering for my community, or having a part-time job, I couldn’t let these activities hinder my grades. This purpose had sprung in me, to not only strive in my extracurricular activities, but also my schoolwork. Balancing both school and additional activities wasn’t a simple task. This led me to many sleepless nights, in which I had to tutor myself on certain topics I was struggling on. This ranged from my hardest subject, to studying extra hours on my hardest class, and even simple topics that I needed extra work…

Freshman Composition has done so much for me academically. In previous years I have had to do little to no writing and even when we did there were no rules or writing process we had to follow. This class has built a great basis for me, towards my academic future. I do realize that I am far away from being even an average writer, but I enjoy and accept that challenge to myself on becoming a competent writer. Parts of my writing, that still need to work are my introductions and sentence fluency. While I believe that my strong suits are, that once I get past my obstacles of writing that I have the potential to write something that will make a difference, other than that all my skills are still very raw. I’ve learned many things during EN101, the…

Back in 2012 I was accepted into Early college academy at south-ridge (ECAS). This school is particularly special because it allows high school students to take dual credit courses in a community college. Obtaining high grades in my classes while also being required to do my best was something I always had trouble with. I was the the type of person who didn't mind a 70 when it came to report cards, until I found out colleges didn't like students with low grades or at least with low performance like me. My freshman year I made the decision to improve my grades and become a better student.…

My junior year in high school I took two classes from teachers who gave immense amounts of work on difficult material. The classes were Honors Pre-Calculus and Advanced Biological Studies II. After a day at school and a demanding golf practice until dark, it was time to start my homework. By then I was already exhausted, but I still had hours of homework ahead of me. Most schools nights I would not be able to start my hefty pile of homework until 8 o'clock. Many nights the strenuous assignments given in Honors Pre-calculus and Advanced Biological Studies II kept me awake late into the night, even as late as 4 am. It was difficult struggling to stay awake and complete my strenuous workload after an entire day of activity. A full night of sleep…

Looking back to middle school I remember the fear I had for someday having to go to high school. My teachers always told me how different and harder it would be when I went. My older sister was in 9th grade at the time and I wanted ti be with her when I went. But the high school she was at was different from the one all my friends were going. I always had a hard time making decisions and now I had to choose between going to a school with my friends or going to a school that would help me prepare for the future. So I decided I would just apply to my sisters school to see if I got accepted, going into the interview I wasn't really scared because it didn't matter to me, I just thought whatever happens, happens. Surprisingly I got accepted and…

One of my challenges was in my Sophomore year when I didn't make the varsity team because I was not in good condition. The other challenge happen in my junior year when I got injured a week before the championship game and I had to recover before the game. When I was a sophomore I tried out for the varsity soccer team at my school but I did not make it, because I was not at that level. Some of the reason I did not make it were ,because I was overweight, slow, not strong enough and would put too much pressure on myself so I was not able to complete a pass or a shot. Those were the things I needed to work on so I could become a better soccer player. I was really upset…

“Stupid Freshman”, are the words every freshman hears entering high school. Everything they do, is wrong no matter what. I remember entering freshman year and being so excited, that was until the first month had passed. I wasn’t scared coming into highschool because I had many friends who were already in high school. Many upperclassmen tried to warn my friends and I what to do and what not to do. As usual, we didn’t listen. As freshman we thought we were all grown up and so mature, little did we know we would need to use our conscience instead of following the crowd.…

The beginning of freshman year, I believed that I can be friends and trust anyone; however now is different because I change and what people around me what they did to me. Well there's a couple of things that happened, but I'm going to stick with one something that happened to me recently. What happened was this person turned everything against me, this person made me not trust the people who I trusted for years. What I really believe in now from last year is that get to know someone before you trust someone. I honestly just don't get some people why they do the stuff they do, and why they can be just awful to other people. I never knew that people can have…

I was seated in the rear end of the Olive Garden, which all in all was pretty quiet, save for a kid's occasional outburst. About halfway through my pasta, an elderly couple sits in front of me and my family's table. They take their order and proceed normally. Then ten minutes or so after they had been seated, two men, probably fresh out of high school sat down with them. One of the two was slightly taller and gave the shorter a reassuring look. From my table, they were facing forwards with their backs to my table so naturally, I was able to see the moment they cautiously held hands. I smiled to myself, it’s always nice to see a couple getting more serious. This was probably the first time the shorter guy had introduced them. The shorter was…
